  • Unusual plot
Format: Hardcover
Good book. Not what I thought it would be about but well written.

  • A Moving Short Story Set in Modern Ireland
Format: Hardcover
This short story tells the tale of a blue collar Irishman and his small embrace of humanity. The reader is never 100 percent sure why Bill Furlong risks nearly everything to help a small girl on Christmas Eve. But he does, and the story ends on a hopeful note that things will turn out well. Some folks call this another "A Christmas Carol." I wouldn't say that. But the story is definitely a nice addition to your holiday reading collection. (Along with "The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree," "The Story of the Other Wise Man," and "The Night of the Meek.") Although, like "A Christmas Carol," the story is short and can be read in just a little while. I think the story conveys an excellent flavor of what life in a small, albeit modern, Irish town is like and the quiet desperation of folks in that country struggling to get by. Be prepared for many terms unique to Ireland. Magdalen laundries, US Indian Boarding Schools, Canadian Indian Residential Schools, child molestation cover-ups... all are examples of the evil created when white male power structures in government and the Roman Catholic church, religious zeal, and racism are allowed to combine. There are just too many sordid examples of the Christian religion and, specifically, the Roman Catholic church abusing power on the helpless. In an oblique and understated way, this book does an excellent job of spotlighting Magdalen laundries and the vile situations they created in Ireland. Recommended. ... show more

Left me wanting more. What absolutely gorgeous prose. I loved this novella and read it in one sitting not wanting to stop but not wanting it to be over at the same time.

  • Thought provoking
Format: Kindle
Small Things Like These is a profound little novella that sheds light on one of Ireland's darkest historical eras, yet still manages to leave the reader with a glimmer of hope. It centers on a heavy question: if you had the chance to do the right thing at a massive personal cost, would you? Or would you turn a blind eye to protect yourself and your family? It is an incredibly thought-provoking and provocative read, to the point where I found myself resisting the very questions it asks. Pondering them forces you to look closely at yourself, your identity, and what you would actually do when facing down injustice. It’s a powerful piece of writing that stays with you, even if the uncomfortable self-reflection it demands made it a complicated, 3-star reading experience for me. ... show more

  • An amazing look into a pure heart
Format: Kindle
The pace of this book was soothing and familiar. It felt as if I could have lived the words on the page. The depth of feeling caused me to pause in a way that deeply touched me. The emotional journey of the main character was true to the source. I would recommend this to all students in school. To understand the life of a father, the responsibility of family and the taste of doing what is right. ... show more

  • Beautiful prose, an urgent story
Format: Kindle
I read it aloud, imagining the lovely irish accent. My heart is grateful to this author, who has written about the important things, not the small ones at all.

  • A small wonder
Format: Kindle
A tale that is surprisingly light on its feet and leaves you as quickly as it came. It creates a glow - a feeling that will stay with you for a long time.
