  • Great beginning instrument
Save yourself a ton of money. If you can play this, your ready to move up to a “real “ instrument. If not, you’re not a player.

  • Sounds great
The media could not be loaded. This is a nice playable instrument. I made a video of me talking about it and playing it, the day I got it. Here’s info that wasn’t in the video: I’m a musician, but not primarily a wind player. About twenty years ago, I got a Maui Xaphoon, the “bamboo sax” and later got some Moeck Steinkopf chalumeaux (renaissance clarinets) so I have some experience with reed instruments already. This seems at least as playable as those other instruments, and the fingering is much easier than the chalumeaux. (My muscle memory of playing chalumeaux throws me off when I play this, as you can see in the video.) This comes with a fingering chart, but it’s written for people who are used to reading in Bb, and I can’t even with that, so I just winged it. Most of the notes I want are pretty much in a row, and I play around with forked fingerings and half-holes to find the rest. My tuning app says that it’s at least possible for me to play at A 440 on this, which is not to say that I always do. This is a good, practical instrument with the potential to make beautiful music, and I feel good about playing it in the rain or whatever, since the plastic should be more stable than my bamboo or wood instruments. ... show more

  • Absolute junk
This mini Sax, pocket sax is absolute plastic junk. It sounds more like a clarinet when you can get a sound out of it. The sound comes out very airy, you can never get a nice clean sound. I know how to play woodwind instruments and I found this to be very frustrating. The reed doesn't sit as well as it should, but that may be to the larger size reed they include with the instrument. I find it odd that the instructions recommend a certain brand and size of reed, yet they include a whole different brand and size with the "instrument". I had to blow much harder than I should have to to get a decent sound out of the item. It was a good idea, but excution fell short. I would pass on this item and look for something better if you are considering playing a sax or clarinet. ... show more

  • I would not consider this a beginner instrument
Of course this is just my opinion as I am not a professional nor even a true amateur sax player, but I have been playing a few wind instruments over the years and while this is not terribly complicated, if I were to recommend something to a beginner, it would not be this! Recorder maybe...something that could lead to this, or if someone who plays a larger wind instrument that isn't always easy to carry with them, then this instrument might be good for a practice piece to pack in luggage when they are on the go and their full-size instrument might take up too much space. As for me, I found it interesting to play, but at the moment, I'm stuck on a Roland Aerophone, but of course, even purchasing that as a refurbished unit, it was quite a bit more than this mini-sax. All I can say is that each person trying it will have their own opinions on how it feels in their hands, how easy it is to make sound with it and whether they like the sound they are able to produce with it. I think it is a decent little practice piece, not truly a beginner's instrument. ... show more
