One of the shelves, the very last item that we pulled out of the shopping box, was cracked on 3 sides but still holding together. Guess that's what we get for buying something made of fiberboard rather than real wood. Not the hardiest of stuff if enough force is applied during shipping of the box. Seller wanted us to return the whole thing if we wanted a replacement or refund. Considering that hassle (the box was in bad shape at that point) we decided to eat the cost of a bad decision, put it together with the cracked board on top where we'd put less heavy items, and stick it in a less visible place in the house. Be prepared for 3 hours of assembly time from unboxing to the final dusting before use. There's about 50 screws in the kit but luckily with enough manhandling my wife and I were able to get all the screws to align and put it all together. We got shorted one screw but luckily with all of those screws one missing screw wasn't going to matter a whole lot to the integrity. Definitely a 2 person job especially when adding the first shelf to the framing. Some tips: 1) We removed the locking washers in some cases to be able to get the screws into the hole. 2) Don't tighten down a shelf's screws until you have all the screws for the shelf finding their holes. 3) When adding a shelf, put it into the frame on a diagonal, slide it in, and once the holes are aligned vertically, push it down flat on the Fram. If this is all you can afford or you just love this design, and have the aptitude and help to assemble it then I guess I'd say go for it. ... show more

I wanted something more than just a book case. I wanted to have a place for books and other treasures. I saw this at my local Ashley Furniture store. I just had to have it! It was the exact right measurement for my space and had plenty of room. I also like the 'tray-like'' feature of the shelves. The height of the unit is what did it for me. With the taxes and free (Amazon Prime) shipping, I paid much less than I would have from my local store. I put all the pieces on a blanket on the floor (so I didn't scratch the hardwood) and the directions were easy to follow. I got it together by myself (shocker) in about an hour or so.     • Awesome looking but not good.
If you are hoping to find an industrial looking shelving unit for a descent price this really looks awesome but unfortunately it is truly the worst product I have ever attempted to assemble. By far. Several of the holes are so far off I just gave up. I’m not sure it will even hold together. I absolutely love the look but it is so bad. I’m an engineer so assembling products like this are usually a breeze for me and I’ve assembled my fair share. This is by far the worst product I have ever assembled. I don’t think it’s even fair to compare it to others I’ve purchased that were a bit of a struggle to assemble. What a bummer. ... show more

    • The piece was easy to assemble and looks nice
From the moment we opened the box, this bookcase has had an overwhelmingly strong chemical smell. The smell is making its way through our whole house even with the window wide open in winter and fans going. Should we even be breathing this? The piece was easy to assemble and looks nice. It came with two small damages on two shelves, but we were able to hide them based on how we assembled them. We also ordered the matching desk and I'm worried about that smell once it arrives. ... show more

This is my second unit. The first one was purchased from and set up by the furniture store. My 4 1/2 yr old grandson and I put this one together. It is exactly what I wanted.

    • Beautiful product, HORRIBLE smell!
This bookshelf arrived with a few dings but not really worth shipping back for. Looks beautiful up, however, as someone else wrote, the chemically smell coming off the furniture is AWFUL. It's been up for nearly a week with a fan and an air purifier running daily and windows open, but the smell has not reduced at all. So strong you can smell it from behind closed doors. Beautiful shelving! Had to wait a while for it but we like it. 2 downsides: 1-Unfortunately it came packaged poorly, so there was scrapings along one of the metal posts. and 2-the "permanent sticker, do not remove" affixed to the front of one of the shelves (there's only one way to put it on), so will need to see what we can do to get it off without damaging the shelf.
