Description

350 pages/6x9 Paperback “Side by Side” deals with how to develop and grow a group culture where students feel trust, not only with the teacher but also with one another, and where music-making is fun. Such a program involves hard work, but Wiff believes that it pays big dividends, and he has generations of successful, committed graduates to prove it. In the end, it's a book about how to live a better life. — Anthony Plog (Composer, Conductor & Teacher) Reading this was like drinking in a tall glass of calm during a stormy time. Wiff's insights are deeply thoughtful and ever-generous. This is a book I will share over and over. — Marianne Gedigian (Professor of Flute, Distinguished Academy, UT-Austin) Full of tremendous wisdom and life lessons on team building and leadership reflecting his long and distinguished career, Wiff Rudd's “Side by Side” is essential reading for any musician. — Michael Sachs (Principal Trumpet, Cleveland Orchestra) This shines a spotlight on the part of the musician’s highway that has remained a mystery. It may be more important than any other aspect of our professional and personal agendas. — Tim Lautzenheiser ( Attitude Concepts for Today) There lies a sense within every committed teacher that our vocation is a sacred trust.Throughout this book, Wiff opens his heart as a teacher to inspire all of us to do likewise, with practical (and occasionally whimsical) guidance in building students as individuals and as members of a studio community that can effect tremendous positive change in our profession and in the world. Wiff has passed along to all of us an incredible gift, so personal and vulnerable, so solid and direct. — Terry Everson (Associate Professor of Trumpet, Boston University) Read more

  • Every teacher and aspiring performer needs to read this book!!
Wonderful book. You can read it straight through as you would any book, but it may have a lot of value by simpling checking out the chapters/information that is interesting or important for you now. I have already re-read several sections. This is straight-forward caring talk and leadership from a real PRO, who shares is thoughtful experiences to life. Literally, everyone who reads this book will come away with something that they can and should use immediately in their own teaching. It is also not a bad manual for life!! Bravo Wiff! • Fantastic and Enlightening
How to begin; this book is fantastic and it comes with no surprise how Rudd’s studio has maintained such a high standard of excellence. Not only is this book very enlightening to me as a (hopeful) future professor, but many lessons are immediately applicable to any private studio. Further, there are many instances where Rudd’s text seems to be exactly what I needed to read during this global event. ... show more
