  • Great horn and great company to deal with
Firstly, the company that the horn came from is Quinn The Eskimo. This is a very professional company. Within a day or two of ordering the package was on it's way. Within a week of ordering, my new sax was here with me. There was a note on the package slip that said that if for any reason at all I was not satisfied, to return it. I would certainly deal with this company again if I have the need. As far as the horn, It is fantastic. Nice sound and quick response. If I were to say anything negative it would be that the mouthpiece is really snug over the cork. You really have to push and twist it on. I think with time it will get easier to get it on. ... show more

  • About the quality and shipping of this musical instrument
The following review is for the manufacturer, for the seller and for whoever transported the merchandise. The saxophone has a good sound and a very good response to the speed of the fingers and the different articulations. As for the tuning, it's not perfect, as to get as close as possible to what it should be for me. In the first place, the mouthpiece needs to be tucked in all the way to 440 pitch. The C that is played with the key 9 in the high octave in relation to the unison (that same C) that is played with the B plate is low chromed. The A of that same octave, if it has the mouthpiece slightly pulled out, sounds a little low in relation to all the other notes. Harmonics sound great. And the low notes can be played effortlessly. There are usually some notes that don't sound as open as they could if they were in the required pitch. In relation to its construction there are small details that could have been greatly improved. To cite one example, the 6 key used for the medium F sharp has a termination on the back that bothers the inside of the right thumb as it slides in its normal playing motion. The mouthpiece that they include saying that it is Selmer is simply for a beginner or a novice. I was actually able to appreciate the quality of the instrument because I used my Meyer 7 mouthpiece. The included neck strap is very good and the case is pretty good too. But all those things compared to the price doesn't beat a 3 star review. All this plus the long wait led me to give it only 3 stars. Not to mention that they did not accept the type of payment that they themselves were proposing on the Amazon website for 18 months without interest and they charged me a card that was as a back up. You never could appreciate the quality of an instrument without playing it. ... show more

  • You should go play this horn, you'll be surprised.
Went into a local store last week and played the Selmer AS42 for myself. Very impressive. It has the feel, ergonomics, build quality, and sound of a Selmer Paris horn. In fact, with the Selmer Paris neck that comes with it, it's really one of the family. I did a side-by-side test against both a Yanagisawa 991 and P. Mauriat 67RC, and the Selmer AS42 was clearly the best playing and sounding horn (I used my own Otto Link 6* mouthpiece, not the AM42 from Selmer Paris that comes with the sax.) The specially designed Selmer Paris neck gives it a very focused sound, and was even throughout the entire range. Saxophones made in Taiwan have gotten bad reviews from professionals here in the U.S., but the Selmer AS42 is worth a good look. Play it for yourself. I would feel comfortable playing it over my Mark VI. This is not a student horn. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with, was the clear lacquer over yellow brass. A horn this good should have had more of a honey gold lacquer. And be aware that some of the earlier released versions, have a neck without the support brace on the underneath side. The newer issues, like the one pictured here on Amazon, do have it. May 2015 Update: I did purchase the Selmer AS42. The sound is wonderful, and the feel is great. But there was an issue with it. There is a problem with the octave venting on the middle Eb that can cause it to "growl". Trying to fix caused other issues. Selmer was good at replacing the saxophone, but the 2nd one also had the problem. The best fix is to sand some off the cork under the octave key. Also, the neck cork is too think for any mouthpiece I have, so that needed to be sanded down a lot. Both of these fixes are simple. I'd still recommend the horn. ... show more
