  • The classic adult coloring book!
Format: Paperback
I figured I should review this book since I've now bought it twice. I think by now everyone knows that the Johanna Basford books started the adult coloring craze, but I bet a lot of folks are wondering if these books are a good starting place. After all, many of the illustrations seem kind of teeny tiny (true!) and the patterns complicated (also true!). Here are my thoughts: I've tried many adult coloring books, and I think these are still the best, overall, even for beginning adults returning to coloring for the first time. The goal of coloring this way is to relax and find pleasure in an everyday activity. When's the last time you just indulged in your favorite colors or bought a sparkle glitter pen? The idea with these books isn't to make artistic masterpieces (although a lot of non-artists do!), but to have fun. If you keep the idea of fun in mind, I think you'll enjoy this book. What makes a good coloring book for adults? 1. Clearly defined shapes. It sounds basic, but I've used coloring books where the shapes aren't finished. That makes for a frustrating color. The shapes in this book are all really well drawn. Also, if she draws a pattern, that pattern is consistently drawn, so you don't end up in a sea of 'wait what'. 2. The pictures are beautiful. This should go without saying, and yet, many coloring books are kinda fugly. This book is just chock full of beauty, from tiny leaves to great big trees. If you liked those 'find the objects' game in Highlights magazine as a kid, you'll love this book--as you color, you will come across hidden animals and bees and little weird flowers. It's fun! 3. The drawings are specifically made for coloring. I think Basford does this better than any other artist out there right now. There are some pages in this book are specifically designed to help those new to coloring develop fun ways of embellishing their art. She's got some details of leaves filled in and others where you're supposed to fill it in with your own ideas. 4. The paper is good quality and resists bleedthrough. YES. This is the only really reliable coloring books series I've found. I've used everything from Tombows to copics to my gel pens with ZERO problems with bleedthrough. If you use Sharpies, you might get bleedthrough, but, y'know, those bleed through plaster. I have colored both sides of many pages with no problems. The paper also has a little 'tooth', so if you use colored pencils, they are easy to do shading with! 5. Most of the pages are worth coloring. I think we've all got our favorite pages, but it's a bummer to buy a coloring book based on the cover only to discover that the cover picture is the only one worth coloring. This book isn't like that. There's a few pictures I don't like, but only a few. I would say I color about 90% of this book each time. It's also got a handy guide in the back with a thumbnail of each coloring page. If you like those thumbnails, you will like the book! 6. Decent price for what you get. At the time of this review, a new copy is only $9. That's cheaper than a pizza! OK, I think that's it. I'd like to recommend a few pens and supplies for those new to coloring books like this. Crayons are way WAY too big. My current favorite coloring supplies are: 1. The Zebra Sarasa gel pens. They come in wonderful colors, have lots of ink, and the .07 tips are the perfect size for these shapes. I've included a link to the full set: Zebra Sarasa Clip Rapid Dry Ink Gel Retractable Pen, 0.7mm, 20 Colors Set with Original Vinyl Pen Case 2. Tombow Dual Tip Brush Markers. These are gorgeous. If you're new to these markers, what's cool about them is you can blend the colors and create lots of shading. If you buy a set, it should come with a clear 'blender'. I like to make leaves using the green and the blue and the blender, starting from nearly clear light green to super dark green. You can also easily layer colors! Start with a gentle, light brush stroke at the 'light' end of your object, then color two strokes for the medium color, then three or five for the dark color. If you want to try them, I recommend Tombow Dual Brush Pen Art Markers, Bright, 10-Pack as a starting set, but if you are buying as a gift and have more to spend, Tombow Dual Brush Pen Set, 20-Pack, Jelly Bean and Groovy Colors (56156 & 56159) would be even better. 3. My current favorite markers are Crayola 50ct Washable Super Tips - "Styles May Vary". Yes, I really mean that. Look, I own two giant sets of Copics, so I know me some markers. The Crayolas are still awesome. The 'washable' ink means they're really wet and lay down plenty of color, but instead of that being a downside, it makes them super blendable! You can create lots of wonderful shading and color mixes with these inexpensive little dudes. If you've never tried them, what have you got to lose? Crayola 50ct Washable Super Tips - "Styles May Vary" Lastly, no set of adult coloring supplies would be complete without some sparkle. There are a ton of sparkly and metallic pens on the market these days. The sparkle ink is usually opaque, so you use it to create highlights. Lots of people like the Sakura 37904 6-Piece Gelly Roll Assorted Colors Stardust Meteor Pen Setl pens, but I find them kind of gloppy and unpredictable. My personal favorites are the Uni-ball Signo Sparkling UM120, 7 Color Set (Japan import) [Komainu-Dou Original Package]. If you'd like to have a pastel highlighter that's pretty but doesn't sparkle, I love these the Uni-ball Signo Angelic UM-120AC Gel Ink Pen 0.7mm, 8 colors set (Japan Import) [Komainu-Dou Original Package]. I have included a couple of photos of my own coloring pages. The first is a page from this book, colored with a mix of markers and gel pens. The second is fromSecret Garden Artist's Edition: 20 Drawings to Color and Frame The third is the two pages side by side, so you can compare the size and format to see which you'd prefer. I hope this has given y'all some ideas for beginning (or continuing!) your journey with color and coloring! Have fun everyone! ... show more

  • So much fun, so very relaxing.
Format: Paperback
This book is fabulous. I'm using Prismacolors on it and it looks absolutely beautiful. I'm not even all that great at selecting colors, but the artist did such an amazing job with the drawings that it's tough to make something look bad as long as you stay inside the lines--which can, at times, be tough. Speaking as a grown-up, I was amazed at how extremely relaxing the act of coloring is. I'm looking forward to picking up the latest book from the same artist because I can't wait for more of this sweet, charming art, AND because I can't believe just how much fun I'm having doing it. I'm a very anxious person by nature, but when I get my pencils out and sit down to color, I can almost feel the stressors draining away. This really isn't so much a kid's book, unless your kid's a super careful one and takes their time with it. I was a careful kid, and wow, do I wish they'd made books like this when I was a child. I would have been so in love. Just heavenly fun. The pieces within are quite detailed and so, so very pretty. Kind of silly story but, when I first began working on it, I realized, to my eternal horror, that I finally need bifocals! I looked down to start, frowned, then looked up. Everything seemed okay. Down at the blurry page, then back up again. What was this? Couldn't be! I wailed out to my husband, who's been wearing them for quite a while now, "Honey! I can't SEE this! What's going on?" He had a good laugh at my expense, which I think I richly deserved since I teased him to pieces the day he got his. If you like to draw at night, as I do, plan on having a good lamp for light. I use an old clamp lamp and swivel it around so I can really see what I'm doing. Do I sound a little obsessed with this book? Maybe. But the truth is that coloring these images is a such a relaxing, pleasant experience, and it's helped me a ton with my stress. Make sure to use nice soft pencils. You can't use marker since the images are printed both front and back. Even if they weren't, you'd have to use a very fine nib and the paper is porous, so bleeding might happen whether you wanted it to or not. You *could* scan them and print them out on a thicker paper, and then color with marker, which is something I've been thinking about. I'm so proud of one of my pages that I actually hung it on the wall. Absolutely silly of me, right? That's how lovely the images are, though. I love this book and I recommend it to anyone who needs a little extra help in letting go of the worries and troubles of everyday life. I can't say enough how much this book was worth the ten dollars I spent on it. Just great. ... show more

  • LOVE this book, can't say it enough!
Format: Paperback
I had to wait two longs weeks to receive my copy of Secret Garden because it was out of stock when I purchased it, but it was well worth the wait - it's a book full of amazing and beautifully detailed pictures that are very fun to color. Every picture is so detailed and unique - some are full scenes, while others are more pattern-like; all are very pretty and follow the same style of drawing and, of course, theme (I am absolutely in love, and possible obsessed, with Johanna's style of drawing). What I also love is that when I add color to the drawings, I really am making it my own; everyone has their own style of coloring - compare the same drawing that was colored in by two different people, and you would see that the drawings are almost like two different pictures. Some of the details can be harder to color because of how small some of them are, but I've been using assorted gel pens, and it's been working out very well. I've only used gel pens, and so far, I love it - the colors come out just as vibrant as markers, but dry more evenly and don't bleed through. The paper takes the gel pen ink very well - it is heavier weighted paper (not quite as heavy as card stock) and a tiny bit waxy, which allows the ink to flow more easily before drying. The paper is heavy enough that I don't mind the pictures being double sided at all. There are so many things to color that I also don't mind one bit that Johanna has added unfinished, detailed inky drawings for us to add in our own inky doodles in order to continue/finish her drawings - I really like this aspect of the book; her art inspires and shows me how I can add my own doodles; it also makes doodling much less intimating because it's not just a blank page, she's started it for you, but leaves plenty of space for you to make it your own. But again, if you aren't one to doodle, and are just looking to color her art, there are tons of full drawings to keep you occupied for quite some time. I have been consumed with spending almost all of my spare time coloring this book, while Netflix plays in the background. It's a peaceful and entertaining activity that gets your creative juices flowing that was much needed for me, since I wasn't using my creative skills enough til now. I can't say how much I love this product and that I am very happy Johanna Basford decided to make a coloring book. I can't wait for my copy of Enchanted Forest to come in and to see what her third book will look like - I know I will definitely be ordering a copy for sure! ... show more

  • Pretty pictures but some flaws
Format: Paperback
This is such a great book with only a couple problems that you'll have to work around. If you like nature and detailed images, this is a must-have in your collection. I've since purchased the Artist edition (wish I had seen it first, actually) and Enchanted Forest and am waiting for them to arrive. Pros: - Beautifully drawn and inspiring artwork! (Probably my favorite I've found.) - Leaves spaces to incorporate your own doodles and details in. (Not something I wanted, but some people might.) - Images aren't too repetitive of each other but do follow a common style. - Good size of book. I have some larger ones that are beautiful (Color Me 2 and 4), but they're so big it's harder to work with them in a small space and even harder to turn them around to get at different angles for coloring different things. This one fit easily onto my desk and I was able to rotate it around as I colored without having to take the page out. - Nice, thick paper with a very slight texture. I used Staedtler Triplus Fineliners and Stabilo 88 pens and have enjoyed using both in this book. The darker Staedtler colors will show through just faintly, though, so you may have to stick to only coloring one side of the page. Cons: - Tiny, TINY spaces to color. Lots of detail is great, but some pictures are made up of such small spaces it will be difficult to use colored pencil. It might work if you keep your pencil super sharp, but then you're going to wear down the pencil much faster. My Prismacolor already tend to break frequently so I avoid sharpening more than I have to. Nothing is worse than wearing down expensive supplies in a hurry. However, I love this book SO much and have found out how much I enjoy using the fineliner pens with it. I've also picked up a couple other pencil brands to try to see if I can find something that will work better for this as well as my other books. - Pages are printed front and back. If you're using anything that bleeds through, this means you're going to have to pick which side of each page you want to forfeit. If this bothers you, there is an "Artist" edition of this book which is only printed on one side of the page. - Images are printed right up to the binding. This just bothers me because it's much harder to get into those areas to color sometimes, which is frustrating on a pictures that require a lot of coloring near the binding. ... show more

  • Secret Garden
Format: Paperback
Secret Garden is probably one of the best known Adult Coloring Books out there. It's actually the second one that I picked up, but I can certainly see why it's so well loved. It's full of page after page of pretty flowers, curious owls, rustic homes, and other delights. There's actual outdoor scenes as well as mandala-like pictures and repeating patterns. There's a lot of variety while still sticking to a strict theme. You'll also notice a lot of the same shapes used from page to page but in different assortments which keeps the cohesion. The paper used for Secret Garden is nice and thick, but not the thickest that I've seen. The pictures are printed on both sides, and sadly markers do bleed through in places and leave dark shadows in others. I only used markers on the title page, name plate, and the very last page to avoid ruining any other coloring pages. Most of the pictures take up only one page, but there are several double page spreads. Unfortunately, they all have elements that disappear into the binding, making it hard to completely color them. I haven't tried removing pages, but it looks like it would be difficult to do so cleanly. You're likely to lose some elements along the binding if you try. The one thing that I don't like about Secret Garden is actually the one feature that makes it more than just another coloring book. There are several pages with instructions like "Draw a swarm of bees" or "Add inky details to the flowers" and "Continue the vine." I don't draw. I don't like to draw. I just want to color! And sadly, these pages don't have much to color since we're suppose to fill them in ourselves with doodles. This will no doubt be fun for a lot of people, but for people like me, it just means that we get fewer coloring pages. However, to make up for that. The cover and dust jacket of Secret Garden are colorable! I haven't colored anything on the cover, but it feels like the same thick, slightly textured paper as the rest of the book. The inside of the dust jacket is glossy though. I started off with markers, but the ink sits on top, taking forever to dry and smudging easily. I'd definitely recommend pencil or crayon for coloring the dust jacket. It's about the size of four pages and is bursting with blooms! Secret Garden is a wonderful coloring book. It has its issues, but I still enjoy flipping through just to look at the illustrations as well as coloring in some of those gorgeous pages. And there are a lot of them! This book will take many, many, many hours to complete and is well worth the price tag. There are a lot of tiny details in this one, so that might be problematic for some people. But there are plenty of pages with larger spaces to color as well. ... show more

  • One of the highest quality adult coloring books out there
Format: Paperback
I have been working on this book for a couple of months now, and I love it! The book features hand drawn pages detailed enough to keep you interested through coloring page sfter page of greenery. But because this book is so leaf-intensive, I color one page spread at a time and then color a page in another book to provide some variety. I colored the title page and the first page with my favorite prismacolor premier alcohol markers. Unfortunately, they bled right through the back of the paper, ruining the printed page on the back side. So now I use prismacolor premier and Caran d'Ache watercolor pencils to fill in the pages. These items work perfectly on the pages. Even though the paper is very thick and sturdy, it buckles when I lightly apply a water wash with a water-filled brush to spread the colors and bring out their complete coverage and brighter colors. So I have to be very careful and make sure my brush is only damp and not wet when applying it to the finished pages. The last two speaks I didn't even apply water to the completed pages becsusebthempahes were too detailed and the colors would have muddied if water was applied. It's not as smooth of a color application, but it still looks nice. I like this book because it's easy to pack up the book and my 12 green pencils in a pencil bag and take them to Doctor appointments or anywhere where I expect a prolonged wait. It is a great way to use the dreaded wait time I experience because I am constantly at doctor appointments for myself and my children. Currently I am about 1/3 of the way through the book and am getting yo pages that provide space for me to draw instructed additions to the page like vines, butterflies, leaves, topiary trees, and caterpillars. I am not skilled at drawing freehand, but I did fill in blanks on several pages and my family told me my drawings blended in with the printed pages. It's just an added extra touch that keeps this book diverse and exciting. I can't wait to finish this book and then I will have a display book filled with my artistic endeavors. And that excites me and keeps me slogging through all. those. leaves! ... show more

  • Saving my sanity...love this book!
Format: Paperback
Fantastic book! I saw a post on Facebook about this coloring book. I've been an adult colorer for years and have many adult coloring books and mandala coloring books. But THIS book, blows me away and I'm obsessed (in a good way) and it's helping me to manage my stress level. The detail is amazing and literally takes hours for one page. I've attached a photo of the cover and the inside cover that I have completed. I absolutely love nature and so it's almost like this book was made for me! I can get as creative as I want and use as many different colors as I want. I have done the first 2 pages using colored pencils; Prismacolor Premier pencils which are amazing..the color is rich and there's not a lot of pencil dust like some other brands. On the recommendations of some others, I also have purchased the Fiskars Gel Pen set. I used the gel pens a little bit on the inside cover. I have two complaints about them; they are not as fine a point as I would like and some of this detail work requires a VERY fine point; and the second problem is that they need time to dry. I thought a dot that I had made had dried and when I pressed my palm on it to color in another spot, I realized the gel pen spot was still wet! ARGH! So if you're going to use gel pens, be prepared to have to wait between applications for them to dry thoroughly; otherwise, you'll have little splotches if you happen to touch them or close the book! The few places that I used the gel pens, they DID NOT bleed through. The pages are nice and thick, but I wouldn't use markers...pencils and gel pens are the way to go for sure. I'm anxiously awaiting the "Enchanted Forest" by the same artist, but this book will probably take me the rest of the year to complete, so I guess there's no hurry! Thanks Johanna for creating such a beautiful book! ... show more

  • What a treat!
Format: Paperback
Beautiful artwork, good quality paper, and activities to provide some extra interest -- what's not to love? I'm an adult who loves to color -- I find it incredibly relaxing, and enjoy playing with color. I've gone through most of the Dover "pattern"-type coloring books -- and I'm always looking for other books to try. I also make handcrafted greeting cards, and enjoy coloring stamped images to use as "focals." This showed up in my "recommendations" list, and I decided to give it a try. The first thing you'll notice is that this high-quality paperback has a dust jacket printed on heavy weight paper. It's covered with the same type of intricate designs you'll find in the book itself, with some of the small flowers highlighted with metallic gold foil. The inside of the dust cover contains a large color-able drawing -- probably 10" x 30" or so. The cover itself is printed on heavy kraft card stock, again with an intricate color-able design (I may try using Faber-Castell Gelatos (Faber-Castell Mix & Match Gelatos Gift Set 28/Pkg) for this). The pages are filled with intricate designs all on the theme of a "secret garden" -- reminiscent of the children's story: flowers, butterflies, gates, keys, etc. There are "search" activities (find the bird, butterfly, squirrel, etc.); there are "finish the pattern" activities ("continue the vine," etc.), and pages that give you the opportunity to "add more detail" to a relatively simple outline. Most of the pages are filled with beautifully stylized flowers in various shapes and sizes to color. I'm blown away by the intricacy of some of these drawings. I use Prismacolor colored pencils (Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencil Sets set of 132) for most of my coloring, and that's what I'm using with this book. The paper lends itself well to this medium. I would say that if you're planning to use markers (Spectrum Noir, Copic, etc.), you might want to photocopy the picture onto heavier card stock, as the paper, although decent quality for pencils, is probably too absorbent for markers. Bottom line: this would make a GREAT gift for anyone on your list who enjoys coloring. I'm taking it on an upcoming holiday trip with my pencils. ... show more
