handle was stuck, no directions but this worked to fix. first, try to twist handle counter clock-size to unlock. (mine would not move but that is how the design is supposed to work). if that does not work, put the handle over a doorknob or something sturdy and pull down hard. That separated the 2 pieces for me. Once separated I lubricated the metal shaft. Now the paddle works great. Finally, one positive of the design.... you can lock the length of the paddle anywhere from 18" to 31" so if in an emergency you need more handle strength simply don't extend the paddle the whole way (keep less than 31"), this strengthens handle considerably ... show more

This paddle supposedly extends by twisting three separate pieces, extending those pieces and retwisting them together to lock them. I am 6'1" and 250 lbs and I could not separate the sections until I put gloves on and twisted with all my might. Then one of the sections totally came apart and would not go back together. I bought this paddle 3 weeks ago and it broke yesterday while preparing my boat to go out. So I did not have the box or paperwork that it came with. Know that in order to return it, you need to package it yourself before taking it to a return center. If you don't then the UPS store, in my case, will try to charge you for about $20 for a box. To avoid that charge I had to request an exchange instead of a return. I'm sure that the new paddle will also be defective. Thanks Amazon! ... show more

This one extends more than most. The gunwale on our boat is a little high so we needed one that was longer. It gets compact enough for easy storage. Just what was needed. Great item.
