  • The instrument is fine, the fingering chart is a joke
Color: Dark Night Black
This is a good budget instrument. It has a nice form and has well cut, sanded and stained key holes so that your fingers fit the spots comfortably, no roughness or air leaks. The tone is good, it holds its pitch well across the full two octaves that it comfortably reaches. The cleaning rod and rag that came with it were oversized for the instrument -- the rod fits as long as you don't have any rag attached to it. I got out the cleaning rod from my flute instead and that one fit fine to be able to clean it out after use. The recorder comes with a paper including 3 songs to try and a fingering chart -- the fingering chart is just wrong on the second octave on the G and B notes, where you need an extra finger on top to keep it in pitch (It has that finger shown for the A though...). But since the key item of all this is the recorder itself, I'm very pleased with that, it's just the perifrials that I'm disappointed with. ... show more

  • Very nice beginner's recorder.
Color: Dark Night Black
This is a perfectly good beginner's recorder. The price is just right for what you receive. The listing actually says that it comes with a leather bag, but that is incorrect. The bag is imitation leather, made of a soft vinyl material. It is soft inside which is nice. It will not harm your recorder, and it also has a magnetic snap which makes it very easy to close. If the bag were made of leather, I imagine the price would be a lot higher. The recorder itself is made well. There are no sharp edges or burrs sticking out from the plastic. It is smooth and feels nice in your hands. It also has a nice weight to it. The three pieces come apart just easily enough. A little twisting and pulling brings them right apart. While you are handling or playing the recorder there is no risk of it coming apart on its own. The pieces fit tightly together. I love the classic shape of the instrument. It's attractive and takes me right back to Elementary school. As for the tone, this is a soprano recorder. This means that it has a higher pitch than other recorders. If you don't hold it correctly and make sure you're covering all holes, it can sound dreadful. These things do take a lot of practice, so don't get discouraged. A finger chart does come with this instrument, but the print is a little small and hard to understand. The chart shows you the proper way to hold the recorder and where each finger goes. It sort of gets lost from there. It tries to show you how to create each note. A black dot indicates you covering a hole with your finger, and a white dot indicates an open hole with your finger up. There are two simple songs included, and one that's a lot more difficult. You're supposed to look at the notes and then find them on the finger chart so that you know where to put your fingers for each note. I'm afraid, however, that you would need a magnifying glass to see the notes on the finger chart. Overall I think this is a really great value. $13 is not a bad price for what you get. A pretty decent recorder, a cleaning rod, and a nice vinyl bag with magnetic snap... not bad. I'm pretty happy. ... show more

  • Perfectly good beginner recorder
Color: Dark Night Black
This is a good recorder with good tuning and tone. I play lots of woodwinds and I was easily able to get a good tone, play a scale, etc. I'm not a recorder specialist but I can make this sound fine. The included fingering chart and sample songs is pretty good compared to a lot of cheap beginner instruments I've seen (ocarina, lyre, harmonica), though it is curled up into a tube to fit into the recorder case with the recorder. You'll need to set it under a couple of big flat books for a few days to get it to flatten out, I imagine. In my professional life I've also dealt with plastic injection molding and this looks like they did a fine job given the budget. There are ever so slight lines down from each finger hole that look a bit like a seam, except they're not all aligned straight, which makes me think they're some sort of parting line from the mold, or they're a scratch mark where a computer-controlled drill might have drilled the holes and then dragged its tip across the instrument. They're barely noticeable even upon close inspection in good light, and if you get the black recorder you won't be able to see them from any further away than a few inches. I couldn't even get them to photograph with my fairly new fancy phone camera. Given the entry-level nature of the instrument, this is a perfectly acceptable cosmetic imperfection. The included swab stick is very barebones but it does the only job it needs to do. Overall, it's well-crafted -- again, at very low cost for a beginner -- and it will make a solid, if a bit "hard", tone without much effort. ... show more

  • Amazing value item!
Color: Blaze Orange
In my heart I want to give this 1 star, because anybody who gives their kid a recorded is ultimately going to regret it. That being said, we've had recorders before, and for the cost this one is absolutely an amazing value. It sounds great, although I don't think anything my kid does with it attests to the quality of the instruction. It's well made, the color is awesome, and it's a cool entry into the woodwind world. While it will provide hours of entertainment for quite a while, just be ready for the fact that you gave it to your kids :) ... show more

  • A little difficult, but works well for beginners
Color: Blaze Orange
I feel like this recorder is great for beginners that want a fairly good recorder, with a nice sleeve to keep it in. It was slightly difficult to get my fingers right so that it wouldn't screech when trying to play it, but for the most part it didn't sound too bad once I got my grip on it right. I do wish that it was a little easier, somehow my ocarina is a lot easier to get my hands on correctly. The pitch is high, so it can be a little annoying while you try to get your bearings on it, but that goes for most instruments until you start actually learning them. The case for it is very nice for a little recorder like this and the colors are great. Definitely wish the sheet music and finger chart was more readable. ... show more
