Firstly, it's very nicely made, not heavy but feels solid. Made of all aluminum, nicely done Satechi. Now onto my tests and reasoning for the 3 stars. Works perfectly with obviously the official apple charger, but also with the Anker Premium 5-Port 60W USB Wall Charger PowerPort+ 5 USB-C with Power Delivery for Apple MacBook. Great! Other docks don't seem to support the Anker charger but this does. My USB flash drives seem to work fine, have not tried any mechanical usb drives, but i don't see a problem with power being an issue. The ports give 1amp each. Also on my Macbook 2015 in system information shows the Hub with a Via chipset, one port is listed as USB2, 1amp power available, and the other as a USB3 with 1.8amp available for charging. I did not try any big transfers to check speeds rated. Now onto the sad part, the hub does not seem to want to work with my Dell LCD screen. It's a 17inch screen connected via a DVI to HDMI cable. The official Apple HDMI USB Dongle detects the display and works perfectly. But the Satechi one shows the display in power save mode. I did try a OWC USB-C dock that was 4 times the cost of this hub and the OWC one would flash the display blue and black making it unusable. It's strange that the Apple one works yet no other dock can work with my simple setup. In contact with Satachi support, recommended i download and install a DisplayLink driver. Sadly did not help. I did notice a lag also when restarting and booting up the machine, about 20 seconds lag, seems unplugging the hub resolves that issue. Support decided i had received a hub with a faulty chipset and have agreed to replace. Great Service!!! Will update my rating once i get to try the replacement. Update: Received the replacement hub very quickly (superb customer service Satechi!). Tested today and found that maybe i have a bad DVI to HDMI cable as it does not work with the Satchi hub at all. Works with my 32inch Samsung TV however using pure HDMI to HDMI. The Apple Digital-AV Adapter works flawlessly with everything i have tried. I've decided to keep the Satechi hub as having 2 USB ports is handy, i love how it's made unlike the Apple one, and supports 3rd party chargers. ... show more

Honest Review from an IT Pro (20+ years, boy I am getting old).

Purchased the Space Grey version to work with my 2016 15" Macbook Pro with Touch Bar. The unit connected perfectly to all 4 ports and worked without an issue. I was able to confirm operation of the HDMI out to a Vizio 70" 4K TV. The TV recognized the input straight off and I was able to operate smoothly in 1080p and at 2160p (30hz). My USB devices seemed to work fine on the unit and transfer rates were no worse than running through any other adaptor. Overall I am very pleased with its solid construction and feel. I am not using this as a desktop replacement or docking solution. This is strictly for when I am in the field and need USB expansion or I am in a conference room and need to connect the Macbook Pro to a large screen. It does what I am looking for it to do. I do wish it would pass more power through it to allow the Macbook Pro to charge at full speed, but I do have additional ports for that (may upgrade in the near future to a version with 2160p 60hz refresh and support for 85w charging). I also wish it had come with something simple like a velcro strap to store the cable on the side of the adaptor when not in use. I used a velcro cable tie to fix it. It works on my HP x360 Spectre (2016 model with 2 USB-C ports). When plugging it in, Windows 10 complained about this not being compatible; however, after disconnecting, plugging in the HDMI cable, and plugging in the multi-port adapter, switching my TV to the proper HDMI input, the picture was perfect. Also, charging through the adapter works, although Windows 10 does show a notification that using the HP provided charger is preferred. However, no issues on the first time charging the battery to full capacity. When the laptop is switched off, but the adapter connected without any cables connected to it, i see a blue light on the adapter - does that mean the adapter is still using a little bit of power from the laptop? I'll double-check to see if the laptop wasn't in sleep mode. Will update the review accordingly. Overall, sad i have to pay for one of these, but this seems to be a good purchase to connect 'legacy' USB devices, and connect to an HDMI tv. EDIT: it turns out that the laptop has a bios setting to allow for USB charging even when the laptop is switched off. So i disabled this setting (don't want the battery drain), light is no longer on. One note - inserting / unplugging the dongle takes a bit more force than the HP-provided charger cable. Just make sure you're not pulling the plug by the cable! ... show more

The best one I have tried so far. Works well with my Dell UltraSharp U3011 ‑ 30" via an HDMI to DVI cable. Just using regular HDMI for some reason is not as good as a resolution, but that was the case for the apple branded adapter as well and I think has to do with the Macbook itself. I like having the extra usb port, however there is one drawback. The usb ports do not have enough power to run a Apple CD superdrive. The apple adapter, while only having one USB was able to run it. The USB ports do work though for external hard drives and thumb drives just fine. If you do not care about the CD rom drive I would get this over the apple branded one which is more money and one less usb port. ... show more

I had my eye on this adapter for my 2016 MacBook Pro and had to wait a few weeks for inventory to become available but it was certainly worth waiting. So far, this is the best USB-C adapter I've found and I ended up trying several before I was able to get my hands on this one. Functionally, it has worked flawlessly. I experienced interrupted USB connections and displays that wouldn't wake up with the computer with other adapters which was started to cause a lot of headaches when Time Machine backups would be interrupted or I'd have to physically unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in to bring the display back. The Satechi adapter has never caused any of these problems and it has remedied a lot of issues that other adapters suffered from. Aesthetically, it looks great and much more pleasing to have attached to your computer than the majority of the others which are typically more expensive, not to mention ugly as sin. The first one was so impressive, I bought 5 more for my coworkers who had also been upgraded to 2016 MacBook Pro's. If I had to pick out any sort of con, it would be that the unit gets warm. It doesn't get burning hot or so hot that it would be cause for concern but it will get warm. I have a suspicion that it is due to the metal casing but again, it hasn't been a cause for concern. ... show more

Nice design but unreliable or defective

I had high hopes for this product but after using it for a few weeks, I'm very disappointed. Pros: It's a very nice design, perfectly matched to my MacBook Pro, and laid out well. It's a lot slicker than the corresponding Apple adapter, and provides two USB-A inputs, which is a nice plus. Allows (in theory) power, video, a portable disk, and a keyboard/mouse to all be connected at the same time through one port. But: It's unreliable. Plugging in an HDMI cable from an external projector the first time resulted in flickering and cycling of the image for a while before it settled down. The second time it didn't stop flickering and glitching, so I had to switch to an Apple adapter, which worked just fine. I use the USB input to plug in an external hard drive for backups, and one time in three, that results in the blue "active" light on the adapter winking out and the connection failing. It takes a few unplug/plug cycles to get past that. Maybe my particular item is defective, but I've had no such issues with the Apple adapter. Great device!

I’m using this on my 2020 MacBook Air. Works great. I use one Thunderbolt 3 port for my external ssd, and the other for this Satechi adapter. I use the USB C port for the MacBook’s plug adapter (as it’s only used for pass-through power and not data transfer). The two USB A ports I use for thumb drives, charging my Bluetooth headphones, or syncing my iPad or iPhone (can’t use the USB A ports to charge the iPad or iPhone, but if they are at least 80%, you can transfer data). Other’s have noted that the USB A ports are a pretty tight fit, but I think the more you use them, the less that will be an issue. But for the time being, it’s a little difficult getting my Samsung Ultra Fit out. The HDMI port I use to hook up to my TV so I can watch Apple TV+ without having to pay $150-$200 for the Apple TV device. I don’t use 4K so 1080p at 60hz is fine by me. If you line out to a TV or external monitor, it’s best to set it up as a second monitor. Don’t mirror the image. Drag whatever program you want out to the second screen and there you go. If you attach a USB mouse or external trackpad to the Satechi hub, you can shut your MacBook and just use manage what’s on the second monitor. Anyway, definitely a worthwhile purchase. ... show more

Lots of little bugs on an otherwise useful adapter

I picked up one of these adapters when I got one of the 2016 MacBook Pro computers. I have 2560x1440 HDMI display and a couple of USB devices on my desk, so this seemed like the perfect solution to the USB-C switchover problem. The device appears well made and seemed to work pretty well at first. Unfortunately, some issues became apparent quite quickly. First of all, whenever the computer woke from sleep (or when the display was in sleep mode), it would be unable to re-connect to the display. My monitor showed a blank blue screen and a "no signal" message. This could be fixed by unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI cable, but this gets pretty tiresome. The bigger problem came some time later. After a month or two, the HDMI port failed. The monitor is now unable to connect to the computer no matter what I try (powering things on and off, unplugging, changing inputs, detecting displays, etc...). I've contacted the manufacturer and am waiting to hear back. UPDATED: I've changed my review to three stars. After contacting Satechi support, I learned that I had to use an HDMI 1.4 certified cable. I swapped out the cable, and it appears to be working now (though still with the wake-from-sleep problems). I'm still not sure I understand why the old cable worked for a month, and then failed, but anyway, it is working for the moment. The customer service seems great! If they could fix that annoying re-sync problem, this would be a solid 4-4.5 star product. ... show more
