Description

An explosive exposé of Samsung that “reads like a dynastic thriller, rolling through three generations of family intrigue, embezzlement, bribery, corruption, prostitution, and other bad behavior” (The Wall Street Journal). LONGLISTED FOR THE FINANCIAL TIMES AND MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD Based on years of reporting on Samsung for The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and Time, from his base in South Korea, and his countless sources inside and outside the company, Geoffrey Cain offers a penetrating look behind the curtains of the biggest company nobody in America knows. Seen for decades in tech circles as a fast follower rather than an innovation leader, Samsung today has grown to become a market leader in the United States and around the globe. They have captured one quarter of the smartphone market and have been pushing the envelope on every front. Forty years ago, Samsung was a rickety Korean agricultural conglomerate that produced sugar, paper, and fertilizer, located in a backward country with a third-world economy. With the rise of the PC revolution, though, Chairman Lee Byung-chul began a bold experiment: to make Samsung a major supplier of computer chips. The multimillion- dollar plan was incredibly risky. But Lee, wowed by a young Steve Jobs, who sat down with the chairman to offer his advice, became obsessed with creating a tech empire. And in Samsung Rising, we follow Samsung behind the scenes as the company fights its way to the top of tech. It is one of Apple’s chief suppliers of technology critical to the iPhone, and its own Galaxy phone outsells the iPhone. Today, Samsung employs over 300,000 people (compared to Apple’s 80,000 and Google’s 48,000). The company’s revenues have grown more than forty times from that of 1987 and make up more than 20 percent of South Korea’s exports. Yet their disastrous recall of the Galaxy Note 7, with numerous reports of phones spontaneously bursting into flames, reveals the dangers of the company’s headlong attempt to overtake Apple at any cost. A sweeping insider account, Samsung Rising shows how a determined and fearless Asian competitor has become a force to be reckoned with. Read more

Amazing story

  • A partial, but interesting biography of Samsung
Samsung Rising, for all intents and purposes is a partial biography of Samsung, with some nuggets of wisdom on leadership and management here and there. While the tale itself is fascinating, it comes off as a bit disjointed, as in, it is a tad difficult to spot a clear narrative. But maybe that's because there isn't one. Perhaps I am the one who is spoilt to expect the story of the evolution of a massive world-class conglomerate from a humble vegetable and dried fish shop, one that is synonymous with South Korea, to be told in a streamlined plot. Add to that the challenge of trying to weave a story when the conglomerate in question does not officially want to be a part of it. The book was definitely worth my time and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Samsung, South Korea, Asian Businesses or any combination of those. Sharing one of the excerpts from the book that struck a chord, "The Samsung family motto: First, serving the nation through business. Second, people and talent come first. Third, the pursuit of the reasonable.” ... show more

  • Democrat Anti-Trump Bias
So far, the author is especially pleased with himself about his anecdotal access to Samsung, the historical context of the business culture in Korea, and being tech-savvy. Still an interesting read. Then on page 70, the author makes an analogy in the similarity between Korean media blatant bias towards Samsung and apt to cover-up corruption with the family ownership of Samsung to the US media coverage of Trump. What., the same could be said of US media bias of the proven corruption within the FBI and DOJ against Trump. Seems reading forward I would expect more negative bias against Trump and his policies. Maybe that's what readers want to hear. The lack of objectivity spoiled reading forward for me. It's the author's journal. ... show more

  • Well written and highly informative
Being interested in Samsung's history I was very pleased to find this book, and even more pleased to find out how well written it is. Short chapters, section headings that are helpful, and well researched. My only problem was keeping up with what to my non-Korean eyes was a bewildering number of name/initials abbreviations. This is an excellent book about a fascinating and very important company that touches the lives of literally billions of people. From early history to the present day, the good, the bad, and not so good about Samsung. ... show more

  • Excellent Read
Very thorough and well researched read on a company not much has been written about. Not being Korean, it was interesting to learn about the relationship between the company and the country, going back generations. Great descriptions of how the company transitioned from a middling hardware company into an almost iPhone Miller over the generations. Really good back stories on what was happening g behind the scenes to develop the awarding g Galaxy smartphone and the memory chips.that supportedi it. Kudos to the author for such a well researched story of Samsung! ... show more

  • A revealing look into a name we all know.
Thought this would be boring but was pleasantly surprised. Very intensely researched. We all need to learn more about the business practices of other cultures.

  • Real history that is more fascinating than fiction.
Understanding the saga and drama of the very humble beginnings of Samsung, evolving through generations and finally the devastating scandal hits home somehow as most readers have probably owned a Samsung product. Truly is an explosive read. Yet book is very detailed so it takes a while but well worth the investment. Helps one ponder unanticipated business outcomes and ramifications, cultural issues and various roles of business and the government in relation to each other. Thought provoking. ... show more
