Using these to make inserts for my motorhome kitchen drawers. It works will but I had thought it might be firmer. I do like these but would be easier to make cutouts with a firmer pad.

    • Good Foam Inserts – It Takes A While To Expand

I need foam for converting some cases I have to storage cases for tools and equipment. These foam inserts seemed like a good item to try. As usual, they came in a vacuum-sealed bag. When you’re shipping items with little weight to them, the space they occupy becomes a premium. Not only is shipping based on weight, but also volume. For that reason, you’ll find these compressed to a thin layer that expand when opened up. After expanding overnight, three of the four sheets were at 7/8” (1/8” short) or 12% short. I then soaked them in water and squeezed the water out of them. Note – don’t wring them out, press them out while on a flat surface. I used a rolling pin down the center, then on each side. Then put towels underneath and on top to absorb the excess water as you squeeze them again. This gets rid of most of the water. Finally, put them in front of a fan, or outside in the sun and breeze (but secured from blowing away). After being fully dried, they now measure just under 1”. That’s probably because they are really metric, not English measurements. 25mm is 0.984” or just about 63/64ths. Measuring it with a metric ruler shows it to match up to the 25mm mark, or a sliver under. Amazon Vine sent this product to me for an honest unbiased review. Would I recommend it? Yes, these are good foam inserts, and, yes, you may have to wait for them to expand. You may even have to add some water to finish the expansion, especially if you have some collapsed corners like I did. But, in the end, they are as good as any others out there.     • Ideal for custom padding for gear cases, etc. Not 1" thick - they're 7/8" thick.

I opened the vacuum bag, pulled these out and let them sit overnight. Next day I had four pieces, totally flat, measuring 12"x12"x7/8". So not 1" - slightly thinner at 7/8". Five stars, but overstating the thickness docked a star. Medium density, would also work for a pillow stuffing.

Once you cut open the packaging the foam needs to rest for a while before it expands to its normal size. Talking of which it is not 1’’ thick, as advertised, but 7/8‘’ The sheets are low density and little spongy, I was hoping for something firmer. Nevertheless, they should be OK for packaging, storing fragile items and crafts. Deserve a 4-star rating. I took off an extra star for misrepresenting the product (thickness of the pads) ... show more

After allowing this foam to expand for a day (it comes shrink-wrapped), it achieved a true 1" thickness and 12" on each side. It is an open cell foam which compresses easily and therefore cushions well, but is not so squishy so as to not hold its form. This is the same type of foam used in gun cases, if that gives you any idea. ... show more

It took a few hours for the foam to reclaim its full shape after pulling out of the vacuum sealed packaging. The dimensions are true; I'd say the firmness is medium; good enough to protect light tools. They do serve the purpose I got them for so it gets 5 stars from me. Just be aware of their limitations. And you could probably get a similar single uncut sheet for cheaper. ... show more

I've bought a few like this before, and they're decent. I always wish these types of things were just a little more firm and dense, though. It would be more worth the price of $4 each if they were a bit more rigid, but otherwise, they generally get the job done.
