  • Premium Journal at a great Price.
Smooth paper to write on which is what I care about the most.

  • High-Quality and Attractive Softcover Journaling Notebook
As both a writer and an avid reader, I take copious notes and also do a lot of journaling. In the past, I've generally used Moleskine notebooks for these purposes, but let's be frank: that brand is often rather pricey. On top of that, it's sometimes hard to find Moleskine products these days, as they traditionally have been distributed through brick-and-mortar bookstores, and in this day of online commerce, in-the-round bookstores have...well, you know. So when I was offered the chance to try this 5.25"-by-8" softcover notebook from Notts Journal, I figured I might as well go for it. And I'm glad I did, as it's turned out to be a well made and aesthetically pleasing product (I got the one with the two-tone green-and-yellow cover). Honestly, I can't see any significant difference between Notts Journal's notebook and the similarly sized Moleskines I already had on hand (admittedly, the Moleskines are slightly but almost imperceptibly larger). The Notts Journal even has the same smooth, cream-colored paper I'm used to finding in the Moleskines, whereas some other off-brand notebooks I've tried recently are filled with a cheaper, rougher white paper. Now, one thing conspicuously absent from Notts Journal's notebook is the cardboard pocket that you'll usually find inside the back cover of the equivalent Moleskine. For me, this isn't an issue: I think the pockets are kind of annoying anyway and use a craft knife to cut them out (carefully, of course). I realize that some may feel otherwise, however, so I mention Notts Journal's lack of a pocket for those to whom it could be a deal-breaker. To be fair, I should also mention that while the retail price for this Notts Journal notebook is lower than the list price of an equivalently sized Moleskine, it is sometimes possible to find the Moleskines on sale--especially here at Amazon--for a price that is equal to or that even undercuts Notts Journal's. So shop around before you buy and make sure you're getting what you want in terms of price, quality, and appearance. (Speaking of appearance, the two-tone faux-leather covers on Notts Journal's notebooks are, in my opinion, far handsomer than those of average Moleskines or other A5 notebooks, but that may not be as important to some customers as it is to me.) Anyhow, I'm quite pleased with the quality and value of this Notts Journal notebook overall, so I'll likely pick up another one or two in the near future. And if you're also looking for a well-made, attractive softcover journaling notebook that can be purchased for a decent price, I highly recommend that you pick up one up one of these from Notts Journal and give it a try. You won't be sorry. ... show more

  • Stylish Budget Notebook
The Ruled Notebook by Notts is all around pretty fair for the price, but I wish the cover were a little more durable. With the simple two-tone color scheme on the cover, it is minimal and clean. While the paper quality isn't the highest, the notebook is mainly designed for notetaking with ballpoint, gel, or pencil. The main gripe I have with this notebook is the cheap feeling cover, which looks like imitation leather, but it falls really short. It would have been better for the manufacturer to choose no texture than the current fake leathery-looking texture. While this complaint is somewhat nitpicky, the rest of the notebook is overall pretty nice. ... show more
