Top Amazon Reviews

  • A must have improvement for your Jeep!
So, all the reviews are correct, but no one really calls out all the important details that help understand the reviews. I'll try to fill in that gap. First, this is a typical Rugged Ridge product. Well designed, well executed, and inexpensive. If it's inexpensive, it doesn't mean it's junk. It just means that it may not be as durable as something made with different (more expensive materials) or it may not be as refined as other company's products. I'll get to what that means in a second. The 13551.11 is the dash kit without the phone holder that mounts on the ball. It took a lot of looking for me to sort that out and I want to save you the search. This also fits just fine on a 2016 Wrangler (Unlimited.) Speaking of fit, this fits very closely and you need to pay attention to installation to avoid scratching the edge of the tray as other reviewers have pointed out. To do that you need to do one or the other (or both) of two things. The edges are not 'sharp' as it might cut you, but they are sharp and hard as in they can scrape up the softer plastic of the tray molded into the dash. To avoid that, you need to avoid the first mistake I made which was thinking this needed to be 'levered' into place. It doesn't. It just snaps into place. You can either round the edges using a reamer, file, or other tool to round the bottom edges as several other reviewers have noted. You don't really need to do that if you don't want to, but you do need to pay attention. The bracket will just snap into place so if you remove the bolt like described in the instructions and line the hooks up over the first two slots of the air vents and then just push straight down (you might have to give it a light little 'wack' to force it down so the hooks flex enough to get past the edge of the vent), the hooks will pop into place. Then you install the bolt and put the cover on and the installation of the base is complete. As to the mount itself, maybe I wasn't very observant, but there were several things I hoped worked the way I wanted but wasn't able to determine before I purchased it. Good thing was that everything was exactly the way I hoped: The ball mount is a 17mm or 1" ball, which is the same as Garmin mounts, the 'standard' ram-line 1" ball, and many others out there, so you can do with this exactly what I did and ditch the Garmin suction cup mount and attach my GPS Map exactly where I could see it easily! It fits a tiny bit looser than the Garmin one, but not enough for it to move. It's just a little less tight. I'll revise this review if the knob breaks off as a few of the other reviewers have noted. It was installed in August of 2016 so we'll see if there is an issue with plastic ageing under the sun. Second, the stud mound for a camera isn't obvious and if you look at the picture, you wonder how an action camera or any other stud mount device would attach. It turns out that the mount is three pieces (not including the bolt and tray) and the ball mount and the piece with the brass (yellow) insert and the larger hole are all separate pieces. You install them in different combinations depending on what you want set up. The base of the mount has a little thumb-wheel that you use to loosen and tighten the mounting pieces. I consider this a HUGE plus since it offers the possibility of mounting other things there too! All in all I'm very satisfied and I'm thinking I'm buying this as a gift for other JK and JKU owners I know! ... show more

  • Works for me.
Installed easily. It took me longer to find the right size driver to remove the screw than to install this device. After reading the input from others, I used a chopstick to keep the mount lined up with the screw hole, so I didn't need to move the mount once it was locked into the vent and dash. The ball fits my Garmin nuvi 2789 and holds the large screen at a good height above the tray. I just installed it, so I have no comment regarding long term durability. It is plastic (although heavy gauge) and in full sun on the dash, so the long term effects of sunlight on the plastic is yet to be seen. ... show more

  • Wouldn’t recommend it. Wouldn’t buy it again
Better for dash cams than cellphones. Does NOT come With phone holder. Do not waste your $ on the cell phone holder they recommend, it’s cheap, poorly made and breaks easily. Cellphone fit is horrible. It dips too deep into the well. Save your money.

  • Looks great. Fits perfect!
I have a 2015 JKU and it fits perfectly in my dashboard. I replaced the phone grip with a wireless charger. This thing WILL NOT move!! I cranked it down and, yes it jiggles when I ride bumps but it stays in place. I have not one worry about my phone slipping out of place or getting banged up. I just wish it had some type of neck on it so I wouldn't be forced to turn my phone sideways all the time. Still, a small price to pay for such a great addition to my JKU. ... show more

  • Great to GoPro and GPS
This thing has been great for mounting my Garmin GPS on trips. It fits the ball mount perfectly. I even grabbed an adapter from another site to allow my phone to mount to it. It also has an additional mount for a GoPro or action camera. This is great for rides as it keeps it out of your line of vision while driving and safe on the inside of my Jeep. ... show more

  • Well engineered replacement for factory dashboard tray.
Okay - right out of the chute - this costs too much for imported plastic. Now that I got that out of my system - This is a very well engineered piece that replaces the factory dash tray perfectly. I have a Sony 4k Action Cam mounted to it and use it as a Dash Cam and to record our offroad adventures. It’s a solid system that doesn’t vibrate or rattle. The 1/4-20 threads are the same universal threads used for almost all cameras. Installation was under 10 minutes from door open to door shut. Note to the vendor - Why are you asking for a star rating on “Suction Power” ? This clearly doesn’t suck at all.. Well, other than the price... ... show more

  • Works but needs modification
For starters, this has real potential. The design is great for the mount itself, fits solidly and great. Super easy to install. Now, the bad (or at least annoying): The piece with the 17mm ball mount is flimsy. Like... Very flimsy. I have it mounted with a Qi holder hardwired in the dash. When I am driving along just on the highway, my phone is just bouncing around all over the place. The culprit here is using just plastic, and all your phone's weight being supported by a single non-reinforced 90° angle (which allows a ton of flex, thereby turning your phone into a dash bobblehead at the slightest bump). This could be easily solved by adding a 45° piece of plastic to make the piece more rigid, or using metal for this crucial piece. As a result, I am replacing this piece with one I am 3D printing with the supports. However, I shouldn't need to do this - while the design overall of the mount is solid, RR clearly stopped short of the finish line by giving the piece holding the mount minimal thought. ... show more

  • Best System for Jeep GPS
The original suction cap holder of my Garmin GPS did not work, i.e. it fell off the Windscreen very often. The Rugged Ridge System however is superb, stable and easy to instell. I can recommend it for Jeeps.
