Description

HexaTraction is a surf wax alternative. Avoid the mess of wax with this translucent and minimally abrasive traction. One kit contains eighteen individual 6.3" Hexagons (measured from tip to tip across) and four half- Hexagons. 1 kit is perfect for outfitting a shortboard or the nose of your Stand Up Paddleboard. 2 - 3 kits are recommended for covering the entire deck of longboards and SUP boards. Installation is done by scraping off your old messy wax. Then, using a paper towel with rubbing alcohol, the remaining wax residue is to be cleaned. You may need to do this twice, first to get a majority of the wax off then a second pass with a fresh paper towel to get all remaining wax off. We recommend to install it at room temperature. Below 68F (20C) the material and glue tend to get rigid, which will make installation more difficult. Thoroughly clean the area with alcohol or similar. Make sure no wax is present. Avoid industrial cleaners. Before starting, lay out the HexaTraction hexagons choosing the best pattern to cover the area where you need grip and traction. PRO TIP: Peel exactly half of the adhesive backing of the first HexaTraction hexagon, so it will be super easy to align with the board centerline. Pour plenty of water. Plenty! It will help in having no air bubbles. Stick on half of the hexagon making sure to remove all air and water out by rubbing with your fingers and/or cloth. Remove the other half of the backing and squeeze all the air and water out. PRO TIP: Squeeze from the center to the edges or from one side and across so all air and water is pushed out. Using the HexaTraction black star as a template, progress through the deck one hexagon at a time. PRO TIP: Align the template on the side of the hexagon with the adhesive backing still on. Complete the layout using the half hexagons if needed. Allow to dry (not in the sun) and let it cure for a few hours before heading out in the water.

  • Surprisingly good traction
These traction hexagons work well. Didn’t slip once during first paddle out. Loved how easy it was to put my long board back in the knit sock after. Usually the wax makes this a chore but now it slides right in. No more worrying about having the correct wax to apply before surfing or getting residue on clothes / car during transport. Unless you are a traditionalist or need tacky wax for airs, I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Get something cheaper
Tons of cheap grip tape for your surfboard out there that performs just as well or better. For the price you can maybe tape 3/4ths of the necessary space on an 8 foot longboard. If you want an even hex grid and use all the tape, you have to put one with their logo on your board. This may or may not kill the vibe as you’re now advertising for them. Application was easy to do but difficult to do without bubbles. The ‘tool’ for alignment of the hex grids is a cardboard cutout that is very inaccurate. Pro tip: mark the arm of the tool you used and continue to use it throughout the process or your board will look uneven. There is some size visible inconsistency between the hex sizes, especially cuts on the corners. Overall, not worth the price in comparison to other tape out there. Regardless, it’s ’good enough’ I suppose and now I won’t get wax everywhere ... show more

  • More like smooth sandpaper than wax; not enough grip for me
I had high hopes for this product when I first found out about it. I liked the prospect of not having to worry about wax melting in the sun or getting wax everywhere. The HexaTraction design also helps add a cool look to the board. I was hoping to test the longevity of the stickers to see if the price was worth the premium over wax. Wax goes for about $2 a block, so I would need to go through the equivalent of 32 blocks just to break even when compared to HexaTraction. I probably use about 1-2 blocks of wax per month, so that means HexaTraction would need to last for about 2-3 years to be worth it. Unfortunately, I won't be testing the longevity of HexaTraction because I have decided not to use it on my board. I was disappointed with the performance of HexaTraction because I did quite a bit of research before deciding to purchase HexaTraction. I tried to find it locally so I could feel the texture, but none of my local surf shops carried it. RSPro is a respectable brand, and I thought that HexaTraction would be as I expected. This is also why it’s hard for me to post a negative review, but I want to help those considering purchasing HexaTraction because of how relatively expensive it is. I read several reviews and also watched videos of installation and surfing - I saw some videos where pro surfers had put HexaTraction on their boards and were shown ripping the boards, so I figured HexaTraction would provide more than adequate grip for my surfing. I thought the texture would be sticky or similar to wax, but the texture is actually more like a smooth sandpaper. Some reviews say that the grip works with wetsuits, but regardless of whether or not I'm wearing a wetsuit I expected the stickers to provide grip. The stickers aren't too rough, and most people should be able to use HexaTraction without having to wear a wetsuit to prevent chafe. After I applied the stickers and felt the board dry, I thought the grip seemed a little lacking, but I figured that being out in the water would improve the grip. However, the grip stayed the same out in the water - I could feel that I had substantially less grip than wax. When standing up on a wave, I still felt that there was less grip than I needed, and my front foot slipped a couple times. Applying HexaTraction is pretty simple and the adhesive is very sticky - I don't think there will be any problems with the stickers falling off due to weak adhesive. However, make sure you apply the stickers the way you want the first time because peeling the stickers off will likely result in curling/peeling at the sticker edges if re-applied. I wanted to get the stickers aligned well and get all the air bubbles out of my stickers, so it took me about 1 hour to apply 10 stickers to my shortboard. I think people who aren't as detail-oriented or are in a rush will be able to grip a board in 20-30 minutes. The instructions advise using a generous amount of water, but I just used one of those small spray bottles that comes with wet-apply screen protectors and had no problems. The description states that the stickers are 6 inches across, and that measurement is from tip to tip. The stickers are 5.5 inches/14 cm from flat edge to flat edge. The spacing tool helps create uniform spacing between the stickers, but you can also place the stickers freehand if you want to have more or less spacing between each sticker. I saw a board online with HexaTraction that has almost no gaps between the stickers. Ultimately, I've decided not to use HexaTraction on my board. If you'll be using HexaTraction to replace the foam deck pad on a SUP, it will probably work, but I believe HexaTraction is not suitable as a longboard/shortboard wax alternative. I found another wax alternative that feels more sticky like wax, and I'll be trying that instead - this other option provides the same amount of coverage at a little lower price than HexaTraction. Like others have said, lowering the price could help to reach others who are considering wax alternatives. It's hard to justify spending $64 for a product that they know little or nothing about, and most will not take a chance as I did. ... show more

  • Awesome Product
I bought three packs which was enough to cover my 5'10" Pyzalien and 8'6" longboard. Application was fairly easy but the instruction video shows an awkward technique of peeling half of the backing back first, lining up with the spacer, pressing down the exposed half, and then peeling off the rest of the backing to apply the rest of the pad. Things went a lot quicker and easier when I just pulled off the whole backing at once, lined the corner into the spacing tool, and then laid down the pad. As the video says, use plenty of water. The more water I used, the easier it was to smooth out all of the bubbles. One pack can be laid down in 15-30 minutes fairly easily. I went out for the first time yesterday on my longboard without a rash guard to test the claim that this was easy on the skin. Unfortunately, it is a bit more abrasive than wax and I rashed up my stomach. Paddling was a little less grippy on my chest and stomach than wax and so I had to be careful not to slide around on the board. This probably won't be an issue in a wet suit but it's good to mention so people know what to expect. It's still grippy enough and I was able to catch waves fairly easily. Once on my feet, it works perfectly. No slipping and everything felt even. I went out this morning to try out my 5'10" but wore a rash guard this time. Catching waves was easy and I didn't slip at all once I was on my feet. I like to put artwork on my boards and I love that this doesn't cover it all up like wax does. I also love the idea of never having to worry about wax melting and gunking up my car and all of my water gear. I give it four stars out of 5 because it is more irritating to the skin than advertised and I have to be more conscious of slipping while paddling than I would with wax. The positives far outweigh the negatives though. A vest, suit, or rash guard pretty much solves those problems. Good product. I'll put this on all of my boards for now on. ... show more
