  • Use in combination with a digging bar
Size: 48-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
I'm upgrading my rating:). I have a number of 30 year old cypress bushes that I removed yesterday. I started on root removal yesterday. The Root Assassin actually works well, BUT in combination with other tools that syou should have, including a pick and a digging bar (described later). The root assassin is sharp and has a 2 inch flat tip that works well for going under roots and helping to wedge them out. If you have a deep embedded root and can clear enough dirt then use a small chain saw or the digging bar with a point to pierce the root. ... I'm in the process of digging up my front yard and planting at least 50 bushes and trees. This sharp-pointed shovel really does not work for any root thicker than perhaps 1/16th of an inch, and really is not the solution for true root-impacted dirt. Instead, 2 weeks ago, I hired actual pro gardeners who dug holes in root-infested dirt to plant large trees. They used something I had never seen before and it worked so well I ordered it recently from Amazon, though I have not yet had an opportunity to try it myself...the Bon Tool RiverWorks 27-198 72-Inch Pencil Point San Angelo Digging Bar. I recommend the longer bar because it is heavier and creates more force. The guys would take this object, that looks like a spear and drive it into the dirt. Because it is so narrow, it easily breaks up the dirt and is used in conjunction with a pick ax. The bar widens the hole as well and the crowbar end easily breaks up and tears thick roots because of the leveraging effect since the bar is so long. This is a heavy steel shaft that drives down into the dirt with a sharp point on one end and a crow bar end on the other end (go to the product as listed here in amazon for an actual picture of the bar. Again, the root assassin is ok. ... show more

  • Roots in your way? Not for long
Size: 32-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
[I own this shovel and use it all the time] For gardening or metal detecting, this shovel is small framed and short for easy carrying: It has stomp pads so you can use your foot to get deeper: Roots are no problem and the shovel has saw teeth on both sides which saw right through roots, even 3" thick. It is perfect for metal detecting, just like me! ... show more

  • Properly named tool for annihilating roots!
Size: 48-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
We're building a dohyo (sumo ring) in my back yard, so we're having to dig up an area about 20x20 to fill in with clay. Well, we thought it would be a good idea to choose the area near a large tree to get a bit more shade. We didn't realize that digging would be such a nightmare! Not only did we have the occasional tree roots to deal with, but there were a ton of thick woody privet roots left over from when we cleared the privet that had been surrounding the tree. This thing rips right through all that! It's making this job so much easier than what we were previously doing, which was shoveling until we hit roots (which was about every 2 to 3 shovelfuls) then bending over to hack away at them with a machete. My only wish is that the 58" one had a handle on the end like the shorter ones. It would have made it so much easier for my 6'4" fiancé to use. ... show more

  • Great buy!
Size: 48-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
I purchased this for use to break up some Bittersweet vine roots that are originating from my neighbor's yard. My neighbor doesn't really keep up with his yard so in an effort to prevent the vines from killing my shrubs and trees I used this item to cut the roots underground along the fence line between our properties. It has seemingly worked well as I haven't seen as many early vine sprouts. This shovel is also very durable and solidly constructed. For the price I was expecting something a little more flimsy and cheap but I received a product that should have cost twice as much! I have not used it to remove any roots as of yet but as mentioned above, the durability and bulk of the product should make it easy to destroy those pesky roots. I wish I had known about this product earlier in my homeownership as I removed a multitude of overgrown shrubs with a shovel and that did not work well at all. This was a great purchase and I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Adequate for medium-duty jobs
Size: 48-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
I bought this to remove 3 dwarf spruce trees from my front yard. The trees were about 5ft tall with a stump diameter of about 5". Not huge, but not shrubs. I cut down the body of the tree with a bow saw, leaving the exposed stumps. This was the first time I ever removed tree stumps like this, so I'm perfectly fine accepting some responsibility for user error resulting in the failure of the tool. However, the video demonstrating its sawing ability is very optimistic. It does work well for small roots up to about 0.5" dia. but anything over that will be a bit of a struggle. You aren't going to get through it easily. I would recommend having a limb lopper for larger roots to save time/effort. Toward the end of digging up the second tree, the handle bent. I flipped over the shovel to bend it back. It worked okay, but I think that was the beginning of the end. I was ALMOST finished with the third tree when it finally failed. I'm grateful it held out for me. It took me 20-30 minutes to dig up each tree. All in all, it was serviceable. If you have some smaller shrubs or grasses, or additional tools to assist with larger jobs, this will do the trick. But if you have a larger job, you might want to buy 2 of these just in case. ... show more

  • My favorite garden tool.
Size: 48-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
I wouldn't exactly use the word "assassin" to describe this tool - I'd say it's more like a "bully." It doesn't just take roots out silly Billy as I'd hoped. Still, I find it super easy to plunge into the ground to dig around roots for easier access. It's very strong and won't bend when applying pressure to get underneath root balls. I find this far easier to use for digging than my shovel. I've used this, and a ton of elbow grease, to take out several bushes around my property. I think it's a must-have for anyone doing medium yard work. ... show more

  • This is AMAZING!
Size: 48-Inch Pattern Name: Shovels
I bought this to dig up tumble weeds (?) that had sent me rolling 20' down the hill trying it by hand. (I'm 64, scratched my eyes, forehead and face up on the bricks. I spent yesterday filling an entire 64 gal green waste can with those pesky things. Today, out digging up baby to 1' Live Oak trees. VERY long roots. I'd have given the Root Assassin 10 stars if I could. More than covered the cost in the first hour yesterday vs hiring it done for me. : D Woohoo!! ... show more
