  • Great Controller
Color: Matte Black and White
Great controller.... Used the Sax fingering and flute fingering. I'm not a sax player but a musician. I learned the basic major scales for the songs i needed and the solos naturally came out of the scale. If you want, you can transpose all song to the simplest fingering key and work that way. So flexible on figuring and the sounds are outstanding. The sax sounds are as good as any, but always the real thing is so much better. but for travel, ease of learning, and multiple sounds (synth, natural, other orchestral instruments) there is nothing better. I had an earilier yamaha version.... didn't use it cause of the lack of sounds and easy access. They solved this with the onboard speakers.... yes, they are cheap (and don't use live), but it enables you to pick up the instruments at any time and just play, practice, learn scales. I pick it up 5 times a day because it's there, easy, and ready to use. I might actually pick up a sax.... Oh yea, you should note that a trained embouchure (mouth) to play this instruments. The reed is simple and any breath on the reed will pick up air. So, my 5 year old does play. Thus, once you learn the fingering, you are set and ready to go. After two weeks i'm play the solos in my cover band. I'm also using this to play some of the synth solos as well. I'm still looking for a killer lead guitar patch. More to follow. Also, as a keyboardist, this is the ultimate breath controller (again, once you learn the fingering, but again, you can learn the simplest fingering and transpose ... think like a guitar capo...... ... show more

  • What a great addition to my musical arsenal.
Color: Pearl White
I replaced my EWI5000 with this Roland AE-20. It definitely took a little time to get used to this instrument, as it feels and functions quite a bit differently from the EWI. But there is no comparison between the sound banks of the two. The Roland Zen sounds are by far more rich and complex than the EWI's and are more easily edited of you choose. Couple that with what you get for free on the Roland Cloud, and it's light years ahead of the Akai. One thing to be aware of is the read on the Roland. It is very delicate and I broke one within the first 3 weeks. Also, there is a lot of key noise, so if you're playing close to people they are going to hear it! Both of these negatives disappear when you consider the value, and sound Banks available for this. Roland AE-20. ... show more

  • Item lives in the repair shop. ROLAND has a parts ordering problem. Did I get a LEMON Aerophone??
Color: Matte Black and White
I got this AE-20 to replace my daughter's AE-01. She uses it as an adaptive instrument, as she has physical difficulties playing other instruments. She REALLY loves this instrument. After a few months it stopped working. We took it to a local ROLAND dealer, he confirmed that the internal connectors had worked their way lose. Very fast service. A week later it stopped working again. We returned to the authorized ROLAND dealer. He diagnosed it as a bad motherboard. After a week or two, I called and found out the part was on back order for 5 weeks. I called ROLAND corporate and they pulled a motherboard out of working AEROPHONE and sent it to the dealer. He then stated that the speakers were also bad. It has been over a MONTH and we still do not have the instrument back. (10 weeks total!) My daughter uses this instrument for marching band. She MISSED USING THIS INSTRUMENT FOR THE WHOLE BAND SEASON. (Including State competition!) ROLAND needs to figure out their spare part issues. They need to properly stock parts for their dealers. THEY NEED TO SEND LOANER INSTRUMENTS if the repair is going to take more then a week! Stand behind your products, or stop making them. I am very disappointed in ROLAND, and I feel like I got a defective AE-20 and am being jerked around. This instrument is STILL IN THE SHOP and I have no idea when it will be back. Symphonic band is starting soon and I fear she will still not have this instrument. ... show more

  • I LOVE this. Fun. Different. Easier than the "real deal"
Color: Matte Black and White
I played sax for years - kind of. Not terribly well, but in rock bands. I always lied to myself that when I retired, I'd pick it back up, play every day, but, frankly, I didn't have that kind of energy - or opportunity. Practicing on a horn can be annoying to anyone and everyone around. They're loud. So, instead of letting it sit on my shelf, I gave my Selmer away to my grandson and enjoy listening to him play in the school band. Then I bought this. OMG. I play it every day - sometimes for hours. I can play it through headphones and not bother anyone, through an amp and blast away when I want. Even the cheesy internal speakers are good enough for practice. Just dialing through the different sounds keeps it entertaining. The blues harp, cello, and the screaming guitar is insane. It can out-Hendrix Jimi on the Star Spangled Banner. It can sound like a Hammond B-3 and responds to the strength of your breath by increasing the speed of the "Leslie" affect. I've only scratched the surface of what this can do. How "true" are the sounds? I donno, I've got a tin-ear and hearing aids from playin' rock music too loud for too long, but it sounds just Great to me. The range is awesome. Instead of one thumb-octave key, you've got four (4!)- two up and two down. You can hit that low A on a Bb tenor. And the "pads" don't leak. And the mouthpiece has only one place to sit so you're in tune to A-440 or whatever you want to dial in. You don't get to fiddle with the reed, because it's just... there. The "pro" model is almost twice as much, but I don't think the features it provides are anything I'd need. It's basically the same instrument. Do it. ... show more
