  • Understand: This is Meant to be DIFFERENT From the Original
Remember the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots toys that all the kids wanted, from the 60's to the 80's? This is not the same toy. Not even close, really. So if you're thinking about buying this ONLY because it reminds you of the old school toy, don't. Look up the original on Amazon, Mattel actually sells the original version for twenty bucks. But if you're willing to give a new spin on Rock 'Em Sock 'Em a chance, then it's not a bad buy. HERE'S WHAT DIFFERENT: 1. The original toy had "joysticks" to move your fighter around. This doesn't, your boxers don't move. 2. The original had two buttons for each boxer, which allowed you to throw punches with your fighter's left or right arm at any time. This new spin-off toy doesn't allow that. 3. The original made a noise whenever you scored a "knockout." This one has no sound effects. 4. You can quickly push the heads back down on the original, and instantly go back to throwing punches. For this new version, it takes more than a few seconds to prep a fighter to be able to "swing" again. HOW THIS VERSION (KNOCK OR BLOCK) WORKS: This is almost like those "slap competition" videos you come across online, more than something boxing-related. Each player pulls back their fighter's right arm. Each player rolls a die with the letters "K" and "O" in either blue or red. If the letters K and O both appear on the rolled dice - say they're both red - then the player with the red fighter gets to hit their "knock" button to slap once at the opponent. The opponent has to quickly press their block button, to raise a defensive arm to prevent the slap. First player to knock the other one's head off three times wins. Personally, I think it's boring. And a bad idea for a spin-off game. Now my Daughter, on the other hand, loves it. I mean, she absolutely loves playing it. Maybe it's because her reflexes are that quick, that she surprisingly catches with me with a knock before I have time to properly hit the block button. That, or the fact that the block button is actually hard to push down easily. It's easy to press the knock (slap) button, but the mechanics of lifting your block arm require more pressure to that button. So you have to give it a pretty hard push. I also disliked the idea of each player having to roll the dice at the exact same time. Because you have to come up with a system, or count down, to keep the rolls simultaneous. It made more sense for us to just take turns with just one person rolling both dice with the same hand. Another issue is that if you see the other player has K and O in their colors, and you reach your block button first, there's really no point in them hitting their knock button to hit you. Because you're just holding that defensive arm up, and they can't slap through it. So if one player is consistently quicker than the other, it's going to be one-sided playing the whole time. I will add that it's sort of silly for certain reviewers to give this toy one or two star ratings, because they refused to read ANY of the product details, or look at the product pics. If you take even a minute to really look over the product info, it clearly isn't like the original toy. It doesn't look the same. The pics show that the fights aren't the same. There's no way you would mistake this for the original. It even says "KNOCK OR BLOCK" on the box, so that people understand it's a spin-off of the original. I ordered it knowing it wasn't like the original toy, but just curious to see what new spin they'd put on this version. My Daughter's rating for this toy: 5 stars. She thinks it's fun, so we play it often. The only reason I'm rating this four stars, is because of the force needed for the block button. Otherwise, I'm not rating this based on MY fun scale. Because the target audience for this toy is our Little Girl, not me. It doesn't matter if her toys are fun to me, or if they make sense, or if they're similar to toys I played years ago. All that matters is how fun the toy is to her. She loves, it that's what counts. My next move? I'm just going to order the original Rock 'Em Sock 'Em toy from Mattel here on Amazon, see if our Daughter finds that one just as fun. Because I know I'll have fun playing that one. ... show more

  • Broke Twice...
Disappointed boys on Christmas morning when this toy broke rather quickly. One of the buttons would get stuck, making the "boxing" pointless because the "stuck" side would always lose. Amazon was great and let us return it for the same product, but the same exact thing happened again within hours of playing with it. Our boys weren't rough with it, so it's a product problem. Bummer! I was the most excited about this Christmas gift! ... show more

  • Fun way to recreate memories
Fun retro-style toy with a little difference. It doesn't work the same as the one I had when I was a kid, but it is still fun and it's a great way for me to reminisce while introducing it to my grandsons. They like it and that makes me pleased with it.

  • grandkids thought it fun
Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots Boxing Game with Manually Operated is a redo of an old toy from my childhood. But it is small, and just the torso and up portion of the robots. So don't expect anything like the original. It does seem to work well, and the grandkids thought it adequate since they have never seen an original one. ... show more
