As the very satisfied owner of a Ring Doorbell Pro, I was hoping to expand my camera coverage to the rear of my home using two of the Spotlight Cam Mounts. I was planning to install them in place of existing wall-mounted outdoor lighting fixtures, for which this product is designed. However, when I removed the first existing fixture, I found I had a 3.5" round junction box with 2 screw holes, which is apparently quite common for outdoor fixtures. However, Ring only provides a mounting plate for 4" round junction boxes with 4 screw holes, along with a couple mounting plates for rectangular boxes. I still tried to install it, but couldn't come up with a way to get it to seal properly against the siding. If you have a 3.5" junction box and your builder cut a super tight hole in the siding for it, as a couple other reviews have noted, you might be able install this with wood screws directly into the siding. However, if your builder left you any "slop" in the cutout for the junction box, you would be left screwing into thin air and/or the edge of the junction box. Ring support was no help, except to confirm that no 3.5" plate is available, and instructed me to return the product, which I did.

This is a fantastic camera. Hardwire in electrical box makes for a very professional and permanently powered and weatherproof solution. Installation was easy. The image on the camera is great, easy to set up through the app, great responsiveness to view by the app, even off location. Great integration with the Amazon Echo family ecosystem including FireTV. The lights on the camera itself are very bright. The speaker and microphone work well. Once you get the auxiliary light control working, it works very well. That does require a manual intervention. The control of auxiliary lights can be an issue after the initial firmware update. For some reason, if you set up the camera using the app and the QR/bar code on the camera package, when the firmware updates it changes from a "Ring Spotlight Cam Mount" camera to thinking it is a "Ring Spotlight Cam Wired" camera. These cameras are identical when removed from the base mount. The "Wired" camera has no provision for controlling auxiliary lights, after the initial install and firmware update, the option to "Control External Lights" in the "Light Settings" section of Settings in the app disappeared. To repair this functionality I had to remove the camera from the Ring app, Then click "Set Up Device" on the home page. Select "Security Cams" Then, instead of scanning the QR/bar code, click "Set Up Without Scanning" at the bottom The next page is a selection of camera types, select "Spotlight Cam Mount" Then set up the location as normal. You'll need to press the button at the top of the camera to force it into setup mode (light in the motion sensor flashing). After the installation the "Control External Lights" option should be in the "Settings > Light Settings" menu. Enable this function and the red wire will control auxiliary lighting. There is a 1-2 second delay between activation of the camera internal light and the auxiliary lights. I believe you need to do the initial install and firmware update first, and then perform the steps above. When I first installed the camera it was configured correctly, and was only after the initial firmware update that it lost the function. Overall very happy with this camera and will buy more.

The #1 reason we bought the Spotlight Cam Mount was for its ability to trigger external floods (plus of course all the surveillance features). We replaced an old Big Box motion sensor flood light fixture with this Spotlight Cam Mount wired to three new RAB professional dual-head flood light fixtures (model HB2A) to light up three corners of our garage. We designed the system and our electrician professionally installed everything. Wired and installed correctly, the Spotlight Cam Mount can trigger external lights with total wattage of 150 watts - ostensibly intended to trigger a single dual-head fixture with two 75 watt traditional bulbs. Because we are using LED lamps that consumer only 19 watts apiece (CREE 150 watt equivalent replacement - 1500 lumens), we are able to trigger the three RAB fixtures putting out a total of 9,000 lumens and consuming only 114 watts. Installed correctly, the motion sensor has incredible range and plus obviously more customization options than any "dumb" motion sensor. We measured out the advertised 30 foot nighttime motion sensor range and we have achieved it every time. We have the Spotlight Cam Mount mounted on the exterior wall approximately 9 feet up. The flood light fixtures are mounted on the soffits for downlighting. Everything has a RAB outdoor electrical boxes behind them (model VXCA) connected with 1/2" outdoor rated PVC conduit. We had only one minor technical glitch after we installed, which the Ring technical support advanced team was able to fix very efficiently -- When we first installed and went hot, all exterior lights were permanently "on" with no way to turn off. We called Ring tech support and they discovered that the switching relay that controls the external light trigger had not been recognized. Just a couple of clicks and beep boops and their end and it was fixed, no problem. The key was being transferred to the advanced team - the first support rep did not appear to understand the issue and gave incorrect information at first before transferring me to the advanced team. We have encountered no Wi-Fi issues despite lots of brick and distance, which is an endorsement of the now-discontinued Apple Airport Extreme system.
