  • Large, heavy, a bit rough, but works
Style: 13 Inch Drill Press
Arrived in the original factory box, layered in shaped Styrofoam, few pieces of which were still in one piece. Had a big non functional dent to the sheet metal cover of the motor starter, and some chipped paint. This is a 100 pound plus unit, the box took a beating but the packing mostly did its job. The machining of the table, column etc was pretty rough. The table locks down well for height but there is some side to side play. The sound when running was worrisome when I started it but I don't think it is a serious issue, just belts and bearings making a little noise. Instructions were puzzling at first, either mine was an open box unit or they do a little more assembly at the factory than is indicated in the instructions as I at first thought I had missing parts but found that the table elevation mechanism was already installed. It seems to run true but I did not put an indicator on it. Drilled a few holes and it was a real pleasure to have a stationary drill press instead of trying to do everything with a handheld drill. I reiterate, this is a beast. I used a block and tackle to raise it up onto a stand, I do not recommend trying to lift it without help. ... show more

  • Get this item local if possible
I bought this item based on price and it's features. The single lever adjustable speed is what sold me and that feature works great! The delivery of this item was a nightmare. Rikon will only use specific delivery services and there is no tracking on this item. I had to find out what shipping company they used, call them each week until it came in, and set up the delivery.I also had to do the same thing with the 14" bandsaw that I bought from rikon at the same time. The light on the unit doesn't work but I'm not going to bother getting it fixed because after taking it apart I realized that it's pretty cheaply made. Like I said the drill press itself works great and the speed adjustment feature makes it worth getting this drill press. My advise would be to by from woodcraft or a local dealer if possible so you can avoid the delivery service. ... show more

  • Good customer service makes up for a rough start
Style: 13 Inch Drill Press
I received the drill press on 06/02/2020 and the packaging was slightly damaged, not mangled but definitely had caught the wrong end of a forklift somewhere. The assembly instructions are adequate if you have a little common sense but I can see where someone not mechanically inclined would have some issues. Assembly took approximately and hour by myself. I noticed that the capacitor housing on the back of the motor was dented but really didn't think anything of it. Once I got it all put together I got my brackets ready to drill.. measured and spiked, lined up the drill, hit the switch, and nothing... the motor hummed but nothing turned. 1 star at this point. I decided to call Rikon instead of just shipping it back because of the reviews of their customer service. I called and after a brief hold was able to speak to a person... no phone menu to navigate, no long time on hold... less than a minute I was speaking to a real person that spoke perfect english. I told him I thought the starting wraps in the motor were bad but he said it sounded to him like the capacitor was bad and had a new one shipped out right away. Well, he was wrong. I put the new capacitor on and same thing... motor hums but nothing turns. I called back expecting to get some push back since it had been almost a month since I took delivery of it. Nope, explained the situation and they shipped the new motor out no questions asked and more importantly no shipping or charge for the motor. I installed the new motor and it works like a champ. I have been drilling 3/4" holes in 1/4" steel and this thing drills through it like a hot knife through butter. I have to say this review would have gone much differently if it were not for the outstanding customer service at Rikon. The drill works great with the new motor so overall I am quite please with it; two weeks behind schedule on my project, but still happy with the tool. ... show more

  • Very high quality
Hands down best drill press for the money. If you can’t somehow manage to be home to receive a delivery, maybe you shouldn’t be ordering anything online. Grow up. Variable speed without belt change is the real deal, spend a little time researching proper speed for materials drilled and you’ll quickly see that you’ve been doing it wrong forever because it’s a hassle to change your belts on other drill presses, ends up costing you more in drill bits and poor quality results. ... show more

  • Broken switch and rough quill movement
Style: 12 inch Variable Speed Drill Press
Many on YouTube have complained that some of the parts on this $500 drill press are plastic and may break in shipment. I took a chance and got one of those with concealed shipping damage. The plastic switch housing and pulley cover are both thin and brittle. Rikon really should spend a few pennies and make these parts out of metal (or at least a form of more substantial plastic). But, I was not prepared for the very rough movement of the quill. I could feel and hear a "thumping" inside the head of the drill press as the quill was raised and lowered. I promptly returned the unit. Things can go wrong and damage can occur in shipping. So, I'm willing to receive a replacement. I own a Rikon lathe that I'm very impressed with. Also, Rikon customer service was helpful and friendly. That counts for a lot. Edgar, you bought the company a second chance. Hopefully, the replacement drill press will restore my opinion of this company. If so, I'll revisit this review. If not, it will get returned for a different product. ... show more

  • Lousy customer service by Rikon remedied by Amazon
Style: 13 Inch Drill Press
I received a drill press previously purchased, damaged and returned by some customer. Called Rikon customer service and was transferred to Joe/Joey, described as management. He understood the problem, took my info and promised to send me the damaged part. I called a week later and he told me it had been ordered and to remain patient. After waiting three more weeks and a total of six weeks I called Amazon. They resolved my problem immediately, picking up the damaged machine and delivering a new unit within days. I hope the drill press works better than Rikon customer service. I’ll comment on the machine itself later on. Thank you Amazon! ... show more
