This can handle a 250-watt lamp, but I found that was excessive, so I down-sized to a 125-watt lamp instead (which is safer). Fixed-position lamps tend to be too hot during the day and too cold at night. This dimmer automatically deals with daytime and night-time temperature differences of the room and maintains the selected target temperature. The PID controller works very good, with only gentle over/under-shoot- which is vastly superior to, and much easier than manually adjusting the lamp up and down all the time. This works so well that I consider it a life-support necessity, and purchased a spare just-in-case. You will need to find a good location in the heated zone for the temperature sensor. My hot-blooded ducks sometimes sat on the sensor, which made the dimmer gradually turn the lamp off for short periods until they moved away- just as it should ;) .

I use this to modulate my ceramic heat emitter in my bearded dragon enclosure. It works great and has never messed up. Just make sure to place the sensor in a proper location to take ambient temperature. Would recommend to any reptile parent! Accurate, easy to use, and takes a second to set-up.

I found after trying this thermostat that it works best sunder substrate for an under tank heater. I tried using it as a thermostat for ambient air temperature. I measured with an infrared thermometer that the spot below the thermometer probe was 4-7 degrees higher than the probe itself. I think this is largely attributed to the probe being encased in a waterproof plastic housing. I have a second thermostat unit with an exposed metal probe that registers a smaller margin of error when used as an ambient air thermostat. Easy to use and set up with clear factory instructions included.

UPDATE: the manufacturer reached out to me after I wrote my initial review and offered to send me a replacement free of charge. I am happy to report that the new unit arrived promptly and so far it is working just as it should. Time will tell if this one holds up better than the last one, but either way I am grateful for the solid customer service! ORIGINAL REVIEW: This dimmer worked great for about 6 months, but now it has suddenly stopped working correctly. It turns my gecko's basking lamp on and off to regulate the temperature, but no longer dims gradually. So we have it turning on and off all day. Very annoying.

This does exactly what i needed it to do. It dims the heat lamp slowly instead of flickering it on and off. Setting is a little unintuitive but there are instructions.
