Description

For the past century, astronomers have been searching for a distant planet to explain unique orbits in the solar system. Designed by Ben Rosset and Matthew O’Malley and featuring art by Michael Pedro and James Masino, players take on the role of astronomers, using observations and logical deductions to search for this hypothetical planet. Each game, the companion app randomly selects an arrangement of objects and a location for Planet X following predefined logic rules. Each round, as the earth travels around the sun, players will use the app to perform scans and attend conferences. As they gain information about the location of the objects, they'll mark that information on their deduction sheets. As players learn the locations of the various objects, they can start publishing theories. Once a player believes they know its location and the objects on either side of it, they use the app to conduct a search. The game ends when a player successfully locates Planet X, and all players have a final chance to score some additional points. As Richard Ham of Rahdo Runs Through described the game: “The Search for Planet X achieves everything it sets out to do so beautifully and creates a really fun experience. ” The Search for Planet X captures the thrill of discovery, the puzzly-nature of astronomical investigation, and the competition inherent in the scientific process. Do you have what it takes to find Planet X? The Search for Planet X is created for 1-4 astronomers, ages 13+, to investigate the edges of the solar system in 60-75 minutes.

  • We Love This Game!
We ordered this for my husband's birthday a few months ago, and we are extremely happy with it. It's a beautiful game, has a solid scientific feel within the astronomy theme and plays well with as little as two people. There is an app to download in order to play the game, which is a fun addition and makes the game feel more techy overall. We love this game and have played it many times since purchasing. People should be aware that it is not the type of game you can spend a few minutes glancing at and then know how to play. We spent time with the instructions, looked up online tutorials and even watched online video playthroughs a time or two as we were learning to play in order to fully understand how it works. It's not impossible to learn, and once you have clarity it's simple enough to play the game. I'm only saying that those who order it should be prepared to do a bit of additional work to get through the learning curve. There is also an option to play as one person against the app, which my husband used when he was first figuring out how to play. As an astronomy family with several telescopes at home, this game feels like a fun way to extend the skywatching hobby on rainy nights. ... show more

  • Great deduction game
This is a great deduction and strategy game, it also has a lot of replayability since you can make it harder or easier depending on how long you want the game to last. You can have a 20 minutes match in the easy mode or a 1hr game in harder configuration. It works with an app that you need to download but it’s also very well design and works perfectly. It’s for 4 players but it works very well with only 2, which we love since sometimes it’s just me and my partner. The main goal is to find Planet X, but to do that you need to figure out where are the other objects such as gas clouds, asteroids, comets, etc. and in each game there are different rules that apply of where they might be position in the map. This game is not very interactive with other players, is more of you trying to figure out as fast as you can, but you do feel the pressure every time someone takes a turn and you don’t know if they are ahead of you or if they figure out something important. At the end they might be more than one player that find where Planet X is on the same turn, and there are point that add up at the end if you where first or manage to find more of the other objects in the map. I fully recommend it, it was a great addition to my collection and it hits the table more often than not. ... show more

  • Logic and Reasoning with an Astronomy Theme
High Tech. Game requires a free app that you download to your phone. Players can share one phone, or they can input a code that allows them to all have their own phone. Players can play the same game at different levels at the same time. Taking turns, players secretly scan the 12 sectors of space for various stellar objects. There's one dwarf planet, so if you determine that it IS in sectors 1-3, then you know it IS NOT in sectors 4-12. Research may tell you that the dwarf planet is not next to any asteroids, so if there are asteroids in sectors 4 and 12 (which is next to sector 1), you can use those two clues to determine that the dwarf planet must be in sector 2. It's a great way to learn the principles of logical reasoning and process of elimination disguised as a game. The visible sky constantly changes, giving players fresh opportunities to explore new sectors while requiring them to plan ahead to explore others. Simple rules, easy to understand, great for generating discussion between old and young for team play. No stealing or gotcha moves - all friendly competition. Can be played cooperatively or solo. App is clear and easy to understand. Very enjoyable. ... show more

  • Cool game, worried about app support longterm
App is cool, but I am worried about app support longterm. Would like a simple webapp or downloadable app for PCs to futureproof. Game is great otherwise.

"The Search for Planet X" board game is a celestial gem that keeps on giving! With every game session, the deduction mechanics keep you engaged and coming back for more as you strive to unravel the mystery of Planet X's location in our cosmic neighborhood. The quality is decent and I thought the price was good. Nothing was missing when it arrived. We were able to start playing right away! This game also offers a delightful challenge as you gather data, make educated guesses, and outwit your fellow astrophysicists in a quest for cosmic discovery.
