  • Top notch
I was reluctant to invest in these boots for a few reasons. (1) I had tried red wing's moc toe 3 times before to no avail whatsoever- I had tried 3 sizes and still had far too much heel slippage. (2) Others' reviews told tales of treacherous break-in periods, and I wasn't quite sure if I was up for that. (3) They're pretty darn pricey. COLOR (Copper rough & tough on foot and on left in pictures) I went ahead and purchased 2 colors (harness and rough & tough) because I couldn't tell which I liked better on my computer screen. Both arrived 2 days later. I tried both on and knew immediately which ones I'd be keeping. While the Harness have a more clean cut and polished look, the hide used for the uppers is WAY stiffer out of the box. I have no idea why that is, because redwing clearly states that all of their heritage boots are made of the same hide material and just tanned differently in-house. After wearing them for a full day, I have to say that I do not agree with others' reviews saying that break in has to be painful- at least not in the copper rough and tough color. I could see how the harness color could be a bit harder to break in. But, honestly, these were a joy to wear right out of the box for me, personally. I also think that the copper rough and tough color will have a better looking petina with time. Please note that I did apply Chelsea Leather Food to my boots just before snapping these photos, so the coloration is a bit darker than they were when I first got them. SIZING I went with a 9.5 knowing that that was the closest I'd gotten to a good fit in the RW moc. The fit was spot on. I typically wear a 10-11 depending on the brand. <10 in Cole Haan> <11 in Nike> <10.5 in adidas> <11 in Asics> <11 in Brooks>. So, this was about a full size down from my average shoe size. The heel cup does a phenominal job of keeping my heels from slipping and I have a comfortable amount of wiggle room in the toe box. BUILD These things are tough. I have NEVER seen a shoe so well constructed in my life. Everything about it says "I'm built to last." The leather is the nicest leather I've ever seen used on a workboot. It's strong, sturdy, and just pliable enough to mold to your foot perfectly with time. Whether you're looking for a high quality pair of boots to wear on the job or a tribute to traditional American craftsmanship to wear with jeans on the weekend, look no further. Trust me, I did my research (probably too much) before deciding to go with these. If you can find a store near you to try them on before ordering, I strongly recommend you do that. If you're not able to, then just go into this knowing that you might have to exchange them a few times before you find the right size. And remember not to get discouraged if you can't get these particular boots to work for you size-wise. Try out some of Red Wing's other boots- I've obviously found all of them to have a unique fit. Hope this helped! All the best. ... show more

  • Best casual boots I’ve ever owned
Size: 9 Color: Amber Harness
I’ve had these on for about an hour now, and they are absolutely amazing. They are gorgeous. Quality, fit and finish is impeccable. Been walking around my apartment now for about an hour, and they feel broken in. Just real cool, hot boots (yeah, that’s an oxymoron). Wish I could give them six stars. Buyer beware, though. These boots come with an indisputable reason to be able to return them. Amazon lists the pictured boot sole as Nitrile Cork. The picture shows a dark brown, smooth sole with rather ugly light beige speckles on the sides, particularly noticeable on the heel. I almost didn’t buy them but thought I’d take a chance and return them if the soles bothered me. Mine came with dark brown, lightly-pleated soles. I’m going to keep them. ... show more

  • From Clarke's to Red Wings
Size: 9 Wide Color: Amber Harness
I'm going to break my review into separate parts so that it's much more easy to read, and some people (like me) only care about certain parts in a review. Background: Originally, I had a pair of Clarke Desert Boots that I had worn for almost 6 years. I hadn't taken very good care of them so, while they had character, they were falling apart. I was going to just get another pair, but for years I had wanted a nice pair of Red Wings, so I decided on these. Fit: The most common question on these I've seen. I wear a 10.5 US in Nike's and an 8.5 US Wide in my now destroyed Clarke's. I had gotten a 9.5 US Wide in Iron Rangers originally, but I had slight heel slip and a little too much toe space. I exchanged them for a 9 US Wide and they fit perfectly. I no longer have heel slip, it's tight inside but to where the leather will conform to my foot, and I have just the right amount of toe space. I recommend going to an actual Red Wing store if you can to be sized. While the half size to full size down tip is pretty much true, everyone wears their shoes differently. Look and Build Quality: While looks are subjective, in my honest opinion, these look fantastic. Very minimalist looking, not really flashy, but the subtle high quality stitching and eyelet accenting makes the boot stand out. The very first time I wore these I received a compliment from a total stranger. These look good enough to wear in a semi-formal setting, or just out and about town. The build quality is also very good. Just pulling these out of the box and examining them, you get an idea of how much time and precision was put into making these. The stitching is very well done and consistent, the spacing on the cuts is precise, yada yada. Red Wing knows what they're doing. Comfort: These are going to be uncomfortable for a while, according to everyone ever. For me, it's not too bad, but I wear boots all the time, and my feet are used to being abused. If this is your first boot ever, it is going to be a bad experience until they break in. That said, any high quality leather boot is going to be like that. It just takes time for that new, hard leather to break in. Once it does, leather boots feel great, even compared to sneakers. Anything bad I can think about: The speed laces. These things are flimsy and honestly should just be eyelets instead. You'll probably crush these fiddling around with them, but you can easily bend them back in place. Not a big deal, but still. Eventually I'll have these popped out and replaced with ACTUAL eyelets. The stock laces they give you are pretty average. Most people just take them off and replace them with Redwing's Leather Laces, which I've done as well. I highly recommend you do it too. ... show more
