  • A real stick-kicker
Great Boot. In my opinion, only 8' boots qualify as true sh--kickers, but these come very close. Perfect for work, farm, even hiking under 6 miles or so. Very stiff and strong out of the box, takes oiling (I used Obenauf's) and at least a month for break-in, but worth the wait. After 2 weeks, I'm still waiting. Leather is extra-thick, and sewing is perfect — boot is very handsome. Boot fit is excellent: the 10 1/2D, my normal size, was initially difficult to slip on due to tight tongue but will soften with oiling and use. Shoehorn may be needed for first months. Craftsmanship is excellent; every corner & bend, vamp and lace eyelet & lug, ankle and heel counter well-made. Vibram outsole good on all surfaces, from mud to snow, maybe even ice. Will find this out come this winter. Important, as 2 years ago I slipped on driveway ice and broke my hip wearing old Sorels. True Vibrams now a must. Due to extra-tough and thick leather, I can wear these uninsulated boots most of the year; just adding thicker woolen socks as cold sets in. We'll see. General support is quite good; I can walk in the rocky woods of Connecticut without constant worry for ankle sprain. Might be the steel shank. My third pair of RedWings but my first pair of real outdoor boots, my other two designed more for industrial use, but all three are top-notch quality and made in USA. Asian-made boots of similar design may last 2 years, but these will last a lifetime. I waited over two years for these Copper Rough and Tough's to go on sale, and I'm glad I waited. Saved $60, and got the lace-lugs I needed. If they had a pull-tab at back they'd be indeed perfect. Two years later — are even better after 2 years wear, as the leather is super-tough and the boot build is solid even after 2 years almost daily walking in woods. Think they will last 10-20 years for me. The Vibram V-100 outsole is great in warm weather, but in cold weather can harden-up and ice-slippage is possible. A better sole would be the Vibram TC-4 "Ice" sole found on RW's Sawmill boot, which is better in my climate. At half their price, these boots are not as tough as true 'handmades' like Nicks or Wescos, but they're plenty tough for many occupations. So, Roughnecks are a real value — too bad they are temporarily OS. I hope they are available again shortly. Do not be fooled by glued Asian-made boots, which fall apart quickly; these are true welted and well-stitched boots made to last. ... show more

  • Great boot.
Purchased this boot several months ago, and I get many compliments on them! I manage to dress them up and can wear them casually with jeans and a t-shirt. I also replaced the laces with a wax brown that is similar to the color of the boot to give them a classy feel, i have even wore them with a blazer and tie! They hold up well, the stitching is impeccable and the waterproofing is well done. I had actually did some power washing in them and they managed to resist any water damage as well as any significant aging. Water did get into the boots, however,so I don't recommend any heavy duty work loads unless you plan on doing a bit more water proofing with a wax. The boots were caked in dirt and grime and were soaked to the sole. I immediately took the right steps in reviving them by drying them off immediately, using a horse hair brush to remove any and all debris, and then following up with a leather conditioner. I also wiped out the inside of the boot to the best of my ability, and placed a decent amount of newspaper inside and left it overnight. They looked like new the next couple days! These guys can take a beating. The pair I received seemed to be slightly mismatched, but for the price I got it for, it was well worth it. The left boot was a little wider at the sole and toe box, and the tongue was made of a different grade of leather, softer than the right. This was alright due to its ability to conform to the top of my ankle much better, but was a bit unnerving at first since the right pair was stiff, and would apply pressure to the skin if tied tightly. If I had another choice, I would size down a half size, and I normally wear a 10.5 in sneakers, but that is only because the boot has conformed to foot, and stretched. Despite it being slightly narrow, the effect that occurs from your foot stretching out the leather gives it a very nice look, and makes it fit nicely. The leather is topnotch, and continues to keep its nice brown luster despite my constant wear. I wear them almost everyday. It is my go to footwear, and I will be purchasing another pair of red wings in the future. ... show more
