  • Mixed feelings.
The book just seems lazily written. It's very short - 160 pages. Which is ok, I actually prefer short - assuming it contains all the information that it needs to. That isn't the case here. The author lazily glosses over concepts, using very vague language... sometimes offering almost no explanation beyond the mere mentioning of a concept. Like the word "badge" - he just kind of says... you can add badges to your push notifications. What are badges...? He doesn't say, you're just expected to already know that. Well that's not why I bought a book on push notifications. It reads like something that he just wrote... conversationally, off the fly, and didn't even bother editing. Like this review. He probably was reading the documentation on one screen and just interpreting what he read / conversationally writing the book on the other screen, with little effort at filling in gaps otherwise. Maybe went back and edited it once or twice... That being said... although vague, it is at least quite comprehensive. That's the good part about it. And it's a down to earth explanation of push notifications - better than digging through the documentation and trying to figure it out. So it's valuable, hence my mixed feelings. Besides, if you're an experienced developer... you can probably fill in the blanks where there are blanks, or refer to the documentation for further detail. It'll give you the broad picture you need to implement push notifications well. So I almost want to give it 4 stars... but I just can't. I see the marks of laziness all over this book. tldr: 3 of 5 for laziness, but if you need a down to earth explanation of push notifications that's pretty comprehensive, though vague - and if you're an experienced developer... it'll point you in the right direction, it's better than going through the docs. Oh... one more thing. regarding this criticism that it is "out of date". It was written in 2019 - if you want up to date information on a rapidly evolving technology, don't expect to get it from a book. Go read the documentation. Books are useful for giving you a general concept of what's going on, after which you refer to the documentation, you read about changes to the technology since the publishing date.... that's your job. So no, "out of date" is not a valid criticism. ... show more

As stated in the book the instructions should work for Xcode 11 and Swift 5. But has failed to work with Xcode 11.5 and a few other things such as setting up Vapor and SQL server wouldn't even work with Xcode 11.0 and 11.1 and 2 and etc... yes, I did follow the instructions exactly over and over many times to be sure. If you are running Xcode versions above 11 this book is no good. My Mac OS is Catalina. ... show more
