  • An essential part of my shaving ritual
Size: 3.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I think any man who's found his way here cares about the shaving ritual just as much (if not more so) than the results. Honestly, these days a disposable razor cartridge, though more expensive than a more traditional shave with a double sided safety razor, does the job just fine, with no more than a splash of water. When I travel, I leave my full shaving kit at home, pack a Gillette Fusion, and don't bother with shaving cream when I'm at the hotel. It doesn't cut up my face, it's not as close a shave, but it's a perfectly serviceable and very quick method of keeping the hairs on my face appropriately short. The blades even have some lotion built in now. I imagine electric razors are pretty good these days too. What attracted me to an older style wet shave was the ritual, the meditation. When you stand in front of a sink and spend more than the absolutely necessary amount of time maintaining your beard hairs, it's a quiet time to think, do something traditional, and frankly indulge yourself a bit in a classy, manly way. You save money in the long run, certainly, and you do get a closer shave, but the time you spend doing it has other benefits as well. It's a time when you can slow down, take your time to do something right, reward yourself with a luxury you've earned. I frequently think about my grandfathers shaving in much the same way. Often I just think about things I wouldn't have time for otherwise. The ritual is a great way to center oneself at the start of the day before things get busy. I could shave in less than a minute from start to finish, but I choose not to when I'm at home. Taking time to shave more traditionally, more carefully, it absolutely worth it most days. Proraso has a well-deserved reputation for its shaving soap. I use it, I love it, it's the only soap I use. Paired with a silvertip badger brush, it produces the best lather I've ever seen, and the best shave possible. The Italians know shaving, and those green tubs of Proraso shaving soap are iconic. It does take time to get the brush and soap ready, however. I'm sure I don't need to tell you guys, shaving this way is best not rushed, and each step needs to be followed with the proper care and attention. While that's going on, however, there is another aspect of the shaving ritual that should be followed, and that is the preparation of the face to be shaved. It's good to wet the face of course, and the best time to shave is right after a shower, while the hairs and skin are moist and supple. I would postulate that another step can be done to achieve an even better shave. That step, is the product you are considering buying right now. Proraso claims that the combination of ingredients in this pre-shave cream will make the skin and hairs softer and make your shave easier. I can't contradict those claims. I have found that since I began using this product several years ago, I've cut myself less. I can't say for certain if it's the stubble offering less resistance to the blade, the skin being healthier and less likely to be damaged, or simply the slickness of the cream under the shaving soap helping the blade glide more easily. Perhaps it's all three. I can tell you it has a lovely cooling effect on the skin, and the scent is, as many have reviewed, quite pleasant. My girlfriend loves it, and who am I to argue with her wanting to put her face near mine? As suggested, I put the cream on my face immediately after a shower, or after wetting my face if I'm shaving at some other time of day. I then let it sit, while I get the rest of my ritual set up. By the time the soap is ready, I've got plenty of great lather in my brush, and everything else in place, the pre-shave cream has really done its work, soaked into the skin and hairs, and I can apply the shaving soap confidently knowing I'm going to have a great shave. After shaving, I clean up, apply my alum block, and generally don't find many if any cuts. I use an aftershave balm just to keep the skin healthy until my next time shaving, but I always like to start with this stuff here. The whole process does take a while, but if you're wondering if it's worth it, adding a pre-shave cream, for me the answer is a definite yes. I wouldn't say I have particularly sensitive skin, but with the dry air where I live, especially in winter, I try to take care of it as best I can. I've noticed my forehead, which I obviously don't shave, and don't use this product on, does tend to get irritated by the dry winter air more readily than the skin I run a razor across most days, and I think the combination of this product and my aftershave balm are responsible. The jar does last a while, so if you just want to try it out first, pick up a single jar and buy another when you start getting low, but it'll be a while. ... show more

  • Did I really just give MYSELF this close of a shave?
Size: 3.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I usually don't write reviews. I base this one on all the other positive reviews. A few months ago I purchased the Art of Shaving's starter kit. I was using a Gillette Fusion. I was impressed with the shave I received using Pre-Shave, Shaving Cream and an after shave. I would usually just use whatever cheap gel I could get and be happy. I began to become more and more interested in getting "The Perfect Shave." Research led me to the purchase of a DE and some blades. Well, this was interesting and a new skill to learn but I quickly figured out the technique. The problem with the DE and The Art of Shaving products was the build up of the cream in between the blades. This quickly led to irration and for lack of a better word, discomfort. More research pointed me to Proraso Shaving Soap. WHOAAA!!! This is a completely different experience. This is an amazing shave. I was still using the AoS (Art of Shaving) for pre and post shaving. Reading more everyone was saying you get the best shave using Proraso's Pre and their after shave. Okay, compared to the price of AoS I will give Proraso a shot. I received both the Pre and After Shave today (A day after ordering) and quickly went to give all three products a try. Well, I'm done! I can't stop touching my face, it is so smooth. I am amazed that I, myself, gave myself such a close and irration free shave. I will not be using the AoS products again. The Proraso products smell great (not over powering) and they allow the DE to easily glid across my face without getting clogged up with cream. If you have never tried the Proraso products, don't wait, order now. I found the perfect products for shaving and I thank every single one of the other Amazon product reviews for introducing me to Proraso. I will not be switching from this point forward. I really never thought I would be so ecstatic and impressed by a shaving product. ... show more

  • Makes shaving much more comfortable
Size: 3.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I waited forever to write this review because I wasn't sure if this product made a difference or if I was was feeling a placebo effect. I stopped using it for quite some time to save the money & now I've come back. It's worth it IMO. I can shave without it, for sure. I just prefer not to. Wet your face with some warm water, then apply this stuff. It leaves your face ice cold with that menthol sensation, and it makes it nice and slick so the razor will just slide right across it. When I stopped using this stuff, my shaves were much less forgiving. Reintroducing this into my routine afforded me a little more forgiveness in my shaves - IE, it minimized my bloody faces & irritation. I still nick my face. I still get irritation, but it's a lot less frequent. It's not this product's fault though. I get nicks & irritation when I shave in a hurry & when I don't pay as much attention to what I'm doing as I should. The point is that I don't feel the brunt of those bad decisions nearly as much when I use this stuff. When I do pay attention, it leaves my skin feeling cool, tight, and refreshed. I won't shave without it anymore. For what it's worth, I also use Proraso shave soap (the sensitive soap in a bottle that matches this one). I think Proraso makes a superior shaving product. There might be better products out there. There are certainly more expensive product lines out there & there are certainly cheaper ones. I find Proraso products to be on par with higher end Art of Shaving products (I actually prefer Proraso) that I have used & to be much less costly. ... show more

  • Tamed the dreaded Merkur 37c Slant Bar :)
Size: 3.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I'd say a solid 4.5 stars, but made up as follows: 5 stars for effectiveness and 4 stars for fragrance. FRAGRANCE: The fragrance itself is very pleasant, a little citrusy, like the herb called "melissa" (or lemon mint, verbena). Thankfully it's not like a citronella candle. But it is DIFFERENT from the lovely, fabulous smell of the Proraso White (green tea/oat) shaving soap, which I've been using for over 2 years now. It's the same "line" of product, so I would expect the same fragrance. Well, at least they don't clash (and preshave scent does not linger), so no complaints :) I do find it strange that every product in this line smells differently. The White "green tea/oat" aftershave balm smells different still and while that works well too, I am not in love with that smell. I sure wish they all smelled like the Proraso soap, which is so luxurious it could be called "gourmet". The citrusy notes are known in perfumery as "top notes", meaning they're very volatile, so by the time you've lathered up it won't really clash or stay. By the time you're done and applied aftershave and cologne/fragrance, none of this scent will be around. To me the scent of the White soap outlasts the preshave and the balm, which is good :) PERFORMANCE: I recently tried the Merkur 37c SLANT BAR razor - the one some people call "devil razor" and while I didn't take those claims too seriously, I was a little worried. So I applied the Proraso pre-shave, left it on for a few minutes, then lathered up with Proraso soap. It was effortless - the Slant Bar mowed right through a week-old beard in one pass (and I only used a second pass against/across to get the desired smoothness). Not a single nick or cut, no razor burn. I finished with very cold rinse and then applied barber alum - also my first time (I usually just use witch hazel). I think it did a great job, although I'll have to try the "scary" razor again without the pre-shave just to see if there's a difference. 05/22/2015 UPDATE: Well, I did try to shave "with" and "without" this pre-shave, using the same razor (Merkur 37c Slant Bar) and same shave soap (Proraso white). I only did it once, but I "think" there's a difference I notice - a slicker 1st pass. I'll keep using/trying. I also like the cooling sensation while you work up the lather - great for waking up in the morning :) The jar is smaller than the soap (soap is 150ml, this jar is 100ml) and it takes a bit more than "dime size" to apply to full face, so we'll have to see how long it lasts and if it's worth the money, but I am glad I bought it. This is NOT a shaving soap/cream - do not apply this in a layer. Think "thin film", not "layer". And face should be plenty wet. You are just lubricating your skin and moisturizing the whiskers. And best yet: apply a hot towel over it, just like in a barbershop - that's how it's intended to be used! ... show more

  • Proraso = The best shave product a man could want
Size: 3.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
What's to love about this product? More like what's not to love? First there is the Proraso smell/aroma - This is the kind of stuff that you just want to smell over and over and keep smelling. Very distinct to Proraso. Second, the ingredients; green tea, aloe, vitamin E, menthol, etc - the list goes on and all are great for your skin. Third, the smooth glide you will get with your shave - it is very hard to nick yourself with this stuff on. Lastly, the tingly feel it provides to your skin which gives you the fresh soothing feel before and after the shave. To the reviewer who calls this stuff misleading - did you even try to use this as a post shave cream? It is wonderful! There is no reason why you can't, this stuff is a light cream and goes on then blends into your skin. When skin is wet it forms and invisible smooth barrier over your skin for shaving. After shaving, when skin is dried, just scoop a small dab and rub into your face. It will smell good, tingle slightly and feel fresh as well as heal your facial skin with its naturally good ingredients. The only gripe I would say is it cost a lot and is only 3.6 ounces. Agh, who am I kidding, I would pay more if I had too just to have this for my shave! Cheers ... show more

  • Hydrates and conditions the skin prior to shaving.
Size: 3.6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
For anyone that does wet shaving, a pre-shave cream is an essential step. This brand is my favorite and this particular version is the one I use the most. Pre-shave creams perform several function to make shaving easier, and getting a closer shave. My routine is as follows. Wet your face with warm almost hot water. I use a facecloth and hold it against my skin for about a minute, rewetting it frequently to keep the water hot against my skin. Apply the cream in a circular motion to ensure all the hairs are fully coated.. I then let it sit on my face while I prepare the wet shave soap. Doing so softens and hydrates the skin, allowing you to stretch it with the other hand enabling you to actually shave the hairs below skin level. After applying the shave soap a double edge razor glides across the skin mowing off the stubble and providing a nick free shave. ... show more
