5-10 years ago I picked up a Propper brand cotton/polyester blend boonie at an army surplus store. It's camo and I use it when I'm out getting dirty doing field work. Years later, I still absolutely love the hat, but wanted something that would look less out of place in an urban setting when I'm wearing "street clothes." I recently purchased this boonie in black and it's just like the one I've had for years of the same brand. Fit is the same, and for me fits true to my normal hat size (I've never owned a hat with an 1/8 sizing though). So far, it's perfect. Having not really worn it much yet, I have to say I think I will prefer the polyester blend a bit better than straight cotton, but I couldn't find one in black. As far as the chin strap, I've never had issues with the leather slide; I use it infrequently but when I need it, it works fine and holds snug. I normally just wad the whole strap up and stuff it into the top of the hat before I put it on. 95% of the time I never use the chin strap, but those 5% of the times when you get caught in a strong wind storm you'll be grateful for the strap. Simply fasten the strap to the back, at the base of your skull, and grin smugly hands-free as you watch everyone around you chase their hats around in the wind. I've been in 45+ mph winds and have even been nailed by some large dust devils and have never had my hat so much as budge. One thing to note, but I was actually a bit hesitant to buy this because my first hat definitely wasn't perfect. Some of the stitching was a bit goofy and the webbing around the hat was crooked. Well, I'm going to chalk those imperfections up to maybe the army surplus store getting the defects, because this new hat I bought was flawless. Build quality is noticeably improved from the first one I had. Overall, a fantastic hat that will give me years of heavy use. Excited to wear it, and I might just have to pick up a couple more as backups to keep one in each of my cars and my emergency pack.

Bought this in black two years ago for golf and being outdoors, loved it so much I bought it agan in khaki. It has stood up to the PNW weather really well. The black does absorb a lot of heat when in summer sun and it has faded after two years, so i'd recommend a light color if you're using this just for sun. With both hats I own they fit the same (7/14), are free of defects and are inexpensive. Would recommend to others.

I needed a portable sun hat and this fits the bill. Made tough. Love the ease of rolling it up to stuff in my day ruck. We could buy more. Delivery was fast almost next day fast. Thank you

Good hat. I ordered one of these in OD green and ended up giving it to a bald homeless in the middle of summer (2014). I then decided to get another in black (since it goes with everything and I operate mostly at night). The first one I got came 3 sizes too small. It was silly looking on my head, but it fit my girl's head perfectly...but she didn't want it. Go figure. I returned it without issue and exchanged it for one that was the right size, 7.25. It fit great! I've worn it maybe twice since I've been too busy to actually get outdoors. Yesterday, the strap broke off one side. It's frayed at the end and the other part of the strap is still in the stitching so we know that part is good. I would like a replacement, but it looks like I'll have to settle for sewing it myself. No big deal, but I expected better quality from Propper. Probably will go with an American made brand next time.

Hat fit perfectly and is pretty much exactly what I needed. I like the breathable cotton, I often wet the hat and it helps cool me down on really hot days working outside. My only gripe is that I wish the front had a terry cloth or some type of absorbent material to wick the sweat away, it can get a bit uncomfortable after a while of working and sweating.
