  • Not just about the clothing

I have followed Courtney Carver for quite a while and often sing her praises to friends lamenting their overstuffed closets. It's easy to pigeon hole her into the category of 'minimalist wardrobe', but she's about so much more than that. The book opens with an explanation of Project 333 (for 3 months, dress with no more than 33 items) and the best way to go about experimenting with this idea. She then moves into why you would want to try it; for example, the emotional impact of opening a closet that contains clothing with the tags still on or that remind you of a sad occasion, and the decision fatigue you can experience when faced with too many choices on a daily basis. She also explores all the emotions and underlying beliefs about retail therapy and why we often find ourselves owning more clothing that we could wear out in a life time. The book is full of inspiration, guidance, and resources. Even if you have followed her faithfully and had heard a lot of this before (as I have) it is great to have everything in one place for reference and well worth the time and money to read, and re-read, this book. The focus of this book is on the minimalism philosophy in relation to clothes. No part of the book tells you HOW, it is all about WHY. One chapter of the book was devoted to why she not is going to tell you how to create a capsule wardrobe. Uhmm if I knew how to decimate my closet I wouldn't have purchased to book. I ended up getting the info I needed elsewhere. Minus one stars for the book summary not being clear on what I was purchasing. Was a review of what I already knew so it wasn't very thought provoking. Four stars for the content aligning with my values, and them being reinforced and validated. ... show more

We wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time, yet 100% of our wardrobe gets 100% of our attention, emotion, space, and time. 2. Project 333 is a minimalist fashion challenge where you dress with only 33 items – including clothing, accessories, jewelry, and shoes – for three months. 3. Money, time, space, clarity and freedom are a few things that most people gain as a result of dressing with less and trying this closet challenge. 4. As a guide you start with 21 articles of clothing, six accessories, two pieces of jewelry and four pairs of shoes 5. Stuff and shopping won’t make you feel better. 6. The world now consumes about 8 billion new pieces of clothing every year. 7. 95% of discarded clothing can be recycled or Upcycled 8.
