Using these test strips is a no-brainer. Results were compared to an accurate-commercial (electronic) test meter. In the ball park. Just leave it in the test water EXACTLY as long as recommended and read the strip immediately once removed. Use a clean glass with no soap residue. DO NOT use a plastic cup. I recently replaced a 25 year old water softener. Bought these to check hardness setting/adjustment. Results are consistent. I had some old test test strips and results varied each test. I don’t know how long these strips last? I suspect a long time if kept in the sealed container (supplied)

Wanting to know if your water is hard or soft shouldn't have to involve costly tests. These little test strips are perfect. And you get a whole bunch incase you need to monitor on a regular basis. They are easy to read - though they dry off fairly quickly and go back to the test color. So if you want to show someone the results later either take a picture up against the container or put it into the little see through tube that is provided.

I had a water softener installed two days ago. Today I tested the hot water and the cold water separately. Just as I suspected the cold water is showing that the water softener is working the water is soft. And just like I suspected the hot water has yet to go through the hot water heater so it’s still showing that the water is hard. Will test the hot water in a couple of days to see if it’s getting soft.
