Description

The Pony Multi Purpose bench vise features heavy duty rugged strength usually available only in more expensive vises. Jaws rotate a full 360 degrees. Three different styles of jaws can be rotated to any work position and securely locked. The parallel steel jaws hold most flat objects in any position. Large steel pipe jaws hold pipe or rounds objects up to 3 Inch. The steel "V" jaws can hold most round, cylindrical or odd shaped objects up to 3 Inch. All jaws are replaceable. The entire vise also swivels a full 360 degrees and can be securely locked in any position. Adjustment screw is fully protected in work area by steel cylindrical enclosure. Ductile iron castings have an orange powder coated finish with a large smoothly finished anvil area and all hardware is bright plated steel. This vise has a 5 inch jaw width, 3-3/8 inch maximum opening capacity, 3-1/2 inch throat depth and 35 pound weight. The Chicago based Pony Tools Inc. (formerly known as Adjustable Clamp Co.) which was established in 1903 is the manufacturer of all Pony and Jorgensen products. The Pony Multi Purpose Bench Vises are imported from China.

On the plus side, this tool performs the jobs of a vice relatively well. It has multi-axis adjustability, something reasonably important for gunsmithing duties. Of particular note is that the jaws can not only be rotated 360 degrees in the x-axis, but in the y-axis too. On the negative side, it ABSOLUTELY MUST BE BOLTED DOWN if the rotational axis is to be used. In other works, it will not just “sit” on the bench. The locking mechanisms seem to kind of get in the way when making a rotational adjustment. It’s as if they’re a bit too long. I have not used it as a simple metallic jaw instrument, having only done things that required “soft” grip. In that aspect, the additional soft jaws do not seem to hold magnetically only to main jaws as well as one would hope. I need jaws that can be set as soft but replaced with the hard jaws reasonably easily. To accomplish the last, it seems the magnetic inserts just don’t hold the jaws as well as one would hope. This may be a defect of the inserts and not the vice, but since Amazon packaged them together I thought I’d comment on them too. ... show more

Jaws are not as heavy and my old Wilton vise but don't know if it will hold up when really put to the test. I have not stressed the vise at all yet sone I just got it. When loosening the swivel bolt to turn the vise left or right it is very slipper but when the swivel bolts are tightened it seem to be very sturdy. The is LOTS of oil all over when unwrapping the vise but this was done to assure it wouldn't rust between the time if was packages until it is unwrapped by the consumer. ... show more

I’m a new homeowner and this is my first vise. That said, I did a lot of research to make sure it would also be my last vise. I use this thing constantly. It’s crazy heavy (~40 lbs), opens super wide, and holds all my projects high in the air and completely rock solid. When I purchased this vise, I was under the impression that all three gripping surface had replaceable jaws. Turns out only the upper and lower are replaceable. It is still a nice addition to the workshop and I have already started using it.
