Another option is PlayStation 3 320GB System with PlayStation Move Bundle which would make sense if the Move was something you wanted with your PS3. _______________________________________ < BEGIN REVIEW > Briefly, the PS3-250 is the exact original PS3 'Slim' with a twice as large hard disk. I had the opportunity to actually see and use a PS3-250 on the Sunday prior to its launch. As I expected, the only difference between the ps3-250 and the PS3-120 is the larger disk with everything else the same. Many reviews of the PS3-120 are HERE. < END OF REVIEW > Once the decision was made to get a PS3, 2 important questions might be: - Which model to buy? PS3-120 or PS3-250? - To upgrade or not to upgrade to a 500/640GB PS3? Based on personal experience and the experience of other PS3 owners that I know, the options are the following - remember, these are my views: PS3-120, no upgrade --------------------- Buy a PS3-120 and do not upgrade if you use it mainly to play movies and you rarely download games from the PSN store. It will take you very far and it should have sufficient room for storing thousands of pictures and a lot of music besides it playing Blu-ray content and CDs. I found that 120GB would not be enough for me. After a couple of years of use, with a few downloaded games, many more demos, lots of pictures and songs and some videos the kids made with the PS3 Eye we've breached the 120GB threshold. I would not worry about that if all I wanted was one of the better Blu-ray players. In addition, anybody comfortable with backing up/restoring the PS3 and upgrading the disk can postpone the upgrade step for later. PS3-250, no upgrade --------------------- Buy a PS3-250 and do not upgrade if you do plan to download a few movies and games but not a lot of them AND/or you don't feel comfortable with upgrading your PS3 yourself. Anyone who is not an almost-exclusive movie viewer and doesn't want to mess with screws and OEM disks should buy the PS3-250. It should have enough capacity to last for quite a few years with good disk space management (delete the demos and downloads you no longer need). PS3-120 upgrade to 500/640GB ------------------------------ Buy a PS3-120 and upgrade it to 500/640GB IF you don't mind swapping the PS3's disk. You get to upgrade your PS3-120 to quadruple capacity for very little expense and probably for less than a PS3-250 would cost you (see next paragraph). This should buy you peace of mind for the rest of your PS3's lifespan. Keep in mind that a 500GB HDD such as the 500GB Scorpio Blue Mobile Sata 5400RPM 8MB 2.5IN or the Western Digital 640 GB SATA OEM Notebook Hard Drive WD6400BEVT (Scorpio Blue) if you don't mind the extra expense can be had for about 90 dollars at the time I am writing this. That would make a 500GB upgraded PS3-120 appear a little more expensive than the PS3-250 BUT you are left with a brand-new 120GB HDD (the drive originally in the PS3) when you are done and you can either sell it or use it as an external USB-powered backup drive or maybe to upgrade your laptop's drive. This would effectively set the price of the 500GB upgraded console to match that of the PS3-250. There are many online guides that detail the process. PS3-250 upgrade to 500/640GB (not recommended) ------------------------------------------------ Do NOT buy a PS3-250 if you are planning to upgrade it to 500/640GB unless you really need a spare 250GB external HDD instead of a spare 120GB HDD and think that the price difference is worth the larger spare drive. EVALUATION The PS3-250 while not for everyone, deserves its 5 stars. In my view, there is enough value added by doubling the storage capacity to justify the price difference over the PS3-120. ______________________________________ NOTE: If you want to upgrade you are better off if you upgrade immediately. This way you avoid the backup/restore hassles and therefore greatly simplify the process. Best Entertainment Purchase Ever Made
Buying a game console is a rare purchase for me, the last system I bought being the DS Lite in 2006. I normally play older, more affordable games and shy away from the latest technology. The DS had been out for 2 years before I got my own, and likewise the PS3 has been on the market for about 3 years. I never saw myself buying a PS3 because after hearing a lot of bad press about it, I began to think of it as the lame horse of the current generation of consoles--the Xbox 360 had made a very strong showing in the United States, and the Wii was also making a killing in sales. After the market domination of the Playstation 2 in the previous generation, I wondered how Sony could possibly live up to this success. Choosing a console became a much more difficult task, because there was no longer a clearly dominant platform. When I decided to finally get a new console, I was feeling very insecure about my choice. This lead to me doing copious amounts of research on all three major consoles over the course of several months, taking into account market dynamics, hardware features and qualities, and software titles. I couldn't just ask people which one to buy because everyone ends up becoming a fanboy, so their testimony is practically useless. When I started my research, I was already biased against the PS3. To spare you all the details, I'll just go ahead and tell you that I completely changed my mind after looking more closely, and if you want my honest appraisal, the PS3 is the best system you can buy for this generation. I do plan on getting a Wii later on (possibly next year) because it has many great exclusive games, but if you have to choose just one then follow my lead. What sold me on the PS3 hardware were the following features: * Blu-ray * Built-in wifi * Free online play If you really think about it, these few features lend incredible strength to the platform. Those features aside, I don't think you will find a more well designed and manufactured system. I would say that the Xbox technically has better graphics, but the difference is so slight that I found it difficult to care. The PS3 graphics are so good that I can't complain at all, and the debate about which system actually has better graphics rages on. The bottom line is that the graphics on the PS3 are gorgeous and smooth, and I have confidence in the system's ability to perform. With the PS3 Slim's affordable price tag, there isn't any better value for your money. If you were holding back before, now is the time to buy, and you can pick up some of the greatest games now for around $20 or less through the Greatest Hits titles. As for software selection, you won't be disappointed. The library is outstanding. It's also not just suitable for this or that demographic. Some people will argue that one console is better for young people, one console is better for adults, one is better for families, etc etc. There may be some validity to these arguments, but the differences are exaggerated. There is something for everyone on the PS3, so have an open mind in case you have the PS3 pigeonholed for a certain type of audience. PS3 - It DOES do everything (and then some)
I recently purchased the Sony Playstation 3 Slim 250 GB Console. First, Amazon is THE best and it arrived safely and much faster than I had expected. Immediately I went to work on attaining the MUST HAVES for Playstation 3 on my budget: 1 HDMI Cable (buy it off Amazon, it's only $3 + $2 shipping!) 1 Extra Sony PS3 Siaxis Controller (Buy this off Amazon as well, you can get a free game with the controller!) 1 or more Bluray movies (bought Let the Right One In and Interview with the Vampire) 1 or more games (I bought Soul Calibur IV and Afro Samurai (BOTH EXCELLENT w/ High Replay Value!) Now, for the Playstation 3 Ratings: Entertainment Value: 5/5. Hands-down, the Sony Playstation 3 is the best bang-for-the-buck in any category! Bluray movies are absolutely stunning visually and audio-wise. The only downfall to Bluray is the high cost per disc in retail stores (I buy my movies preowned OR offline to sidestep this annoyance). The games and features are so entertaining and the Playstation 3 has more than its' fair share of excellent titles! If you are like me, there is a smorgasboard of lower-priced titles (which are excellent) to be had. I am soon buying a router to take full advantage of the FREE online play Sony offers! Price Value: 5/5. With the cost of a Bluray player averaging $200 (some are cheaper, some are more, I know this), the Ps3 is a clearly good purchase. Not only can you watch Bluray movies, but you can upload movies, music, and more directly to the PS3 via a USB jumpdrive! Excellent value for the money. Other notes: The Sony PS3 is a good purchase if you want to watch Bluray and DVD Movies, listen to music with excellent sound quality, play some of the best games out there and get into free online gameplay (unlike 360). My only gripe is that it is not backwards compatible with Playstation 2 games. This is pretty minor to me, however, because the PS3 games are so much deeper and better graphically that I don't really have the "urge" to jump back to Ps2 games. Incredible technology but complex
OK, I admit I'm new to the PS3, but I'm quite knowledgeable about technology in general and I am a certified PC technician. First of all this is an amazing piece of technology for the money. An IBM cell 8 way processor with built in Blue Ray, Wifi, graphics, bluetooth, 250GB hdd etc., for $350.00! I would have only dreamed of being able to buy this at this price point ten years ago. I had preordered this thing on Amazon and was surprised to get delivery of it the day after it was released. Bravo Amazon! I did find the setup of this beast a little intimidating. OK, I admit, I didn't read the directions, but knew intuitively what needed to be done. Connect the cables, power it up, then try and get it on my wireless network. First of all I have a very strong security framework on my router. I use a 64 bit random WPA key with MAC filtering. The first thing I did is have it auto detect the network. No problems here, found my network name just fine. Then it asked for my security key. Here is where the fun began. I know I could attach a USB keyboard, and in retrospect, that would have been much easier to input the key. However, I didn't have a USB keyboard laying around anywhere. So - on I went with inputting it using the dual shock controller. This was a bit unintuitive to learn how to use. Once I got the hang of it, no problem. I then inputted the key and told it to connect. It wouldn't connect. Then I figured out I had MAC filtering and would need to find the MAC address on the thing. That was pretty straight forward but now I found it didn't keep the security key I had spent 20 minutes typing into it before. ARGH!!! So I went through the process again and this time it connected. Next, I found it was using an older operating system so I had it update it online. I guess I was kind of dissapointed that Sony didn't have the latest operating system on this thing since it was so new - but guess it missed the cutoff on that one. This took about 45 minutes sice I have a pretty slow connection out in the country. That worked fine. Now I had to input and register on the PlayStation Network. Also no problem, but time consuming. Now, I'm just about done, but I found out I had to register the bluetooth controllers. This also was not very intuitive. You mean it doesn't just find them and register them on their own? Nope. So I went through the procedure of registering the dual shock controller on separate channels. BTW, you also have to charge them up through the USB connectors while the PS3 is powered on. I also bought one of the BD bluetooth remotes. I put the batteries in and went through the procedure of holding the start and enter buttons until the menu changed on the screen. Nothing happened. I held it for five minutes. Still nothing happened. I tried literally everything and it still didn't work. I got on the forums and didn't find much out here so I could only assume it was a bad remote. Then I pulled the batteries that came with the remote and tested them. They tested perfect. Hmmmmm....very frustrating. For grins, I thought I would change the batteries with a fresh pair of alkaline batteries. Guess what - now it registered! Go figure!!! I'm glad I tried that because otherwise I would have sent the remote back. Why would Sony put batteries in this thing that won't drive the remote properly? So - Hooray - now it is set up and everything works. Only took me about 2.5 hours. Granted, I have a very secure network, didn't read the directions, and have never used a PS3 before but to be honest, I think Sony needs to do some work to make this thing easier for people to set up. I couldn't imagine giving this thing to my parents and expect them to set it up without them screaming and throwing it through the window in frustration. I still give it 4 stars, but for a new user, I think Sony still has some work to do on making the setup process and menus easier to use. Now that it is set up, everything works great. The technology, graphics, and capabilities of this console are awe inspiring. You can find used games on Amazon for a song, and the blue ray player in this thing is excellent. Probably as good as any player out there. I really like the wireless controllers and also like the stealth size of the PS3. I hear virtually no noise from it that others have complained about and actually think it is very well built. I like the capability to upgrade the hard drive in the future and only wished I had a faster network where I live as downloading demos takes me forever. All in all this is a killer device. If Sony would make the setup process a little easier I think this thing would be perfect and a solid 5 stars. To be fair, it is a very complex piece of gear and with this much functionality, there is a lot to learn. Your mileage may vary from mine, but this was my experience with it as a brand new user. If you are looking for a gaming console and need a blue ray player anyway - this is a no brainer. ... show more

Worst christmas gift ever
My new Ps3 250g had arrived on Christmas Eve with great excitement. Turn on the power button for the first time and receive this error message "The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored" and then it asks me to format the hard drive. During the formatting process the system freezes at 99%. I'd tried formatting the harddrive 3-4 times but still recieved the same error messages. On Christmas day, I'd called Sony Playstation 3 tech support, and we went through a series of troubleshooting (no luck). The sony technician was unable to fix my issue therefore they will be sending out a prepaid package to my house so I can mail my console back to be fix/repair. He also mention that this error message only occur for use system, and not brand new system. (Did amazon send me a used ps3 after I pay for a new one) What really upset me the most... is that I had purchased a brand new console and I got a defective system in return. Also, the tech stated that If Sony could not fix my Ps3 then they will send me a Certified Approve System (NOT A BRAND NEW ONE THAT I PURCHASED FOR STRAIGHTOUT OF THE FACTORY) but a used one, a pre-owned system. That doesn't seem fair to me. I am not happy "Side note" I will try to return this item back to amazon for a replacement beside Sony. ... show more

Games... Blu-Ray.... Netflix... Streaming PC Media.... Sweet!!!!
so far so good, Have had the PS3 for almost 3 weeks now and don't have anything bad to say, other than falling asleep waiting for an install.... I owned an Xbox 360 for almost 2 years and just picked up the PS3 for a Blu Ray player as i just purchased a 50" Plasma. Right off I have to say the PS3 seems much quieter when it comes to the optical drive and overall fan noise so I am already impressed seeing that was one of my main concerns when trying to watch a movie not wanting to hear the whine of your player. One thing that Xbox handles a bit better is the game installations. Xbox appears to install the game completely and only accesses the disk one time for authentication at boot but the PS3 appears to access the disk regardless. Now maybe i just missed something but doesn't seem to be a way to have no acess to the disk once installed on the PS3. With that being said it's almost a moot point seeing how quiet the drive / fan are so it's really not that big of a deal. Other than that having the 250gig HDD is sweet as i don't forsee needing much more than that but like the idea that if wanted a larger HDD (haven't checked how much the PS3 actually supports) that i can just buy one and install. Unlike the Xbox and there proprietary HDD which the prices for them are ridiculous when compared to similar sized 2.5" drives. So all in all the PS 3 rocks even with me being an overall Xbox fan. It does it all.... Gaming, Blu-Ray (pretty sweet on the plasma in 1080p), Netflix (with a disk at the moment, app soon to come), Internet and able streaming almost all media from the PC directly. A definite buy. Oh wait, One thing to note is the controller... I think it's kind of "Wonky" that there is no removable battery therefore if it dies i have to have another whole controller on hand or plug directly to usb and sit closer / buy an extended usb cable... Xbox has it with removable / rechargeable 3rd party Lithium batteries. ... show more

Great Blu Ray Player, Disappointing for Netflix streaming
We bought this not so much as a game playing device, but as a combination blu ray player that can stream netflix content. We favored the PS3 over the xBox 360 because the PS3 has no additional subscription fees for net access (XBox is something like $50/year). As a Blu Ray player it is flawless (be sure to get the PS3 adapter for harmony remotes if you have one of those). As a netflix streaming device, it has been a bust. We have a super fast Cable connection to the internet with download speeds in excess of 12 MB/sec, yet the wait to display the available titles is excruciatingly slow, and it can take a couple of minutes after selecting a title to get a "This title cannot be played at this time" message. In contrast, browsing streaming netflix content from the Mac mini on the same internet connection is speedy & flawless. This leads me to conclude that the problem is with the software that netflix provides for the PS3. In the PS3's defense, once playback has begun, the streaming is flawless, and the picture is beautiful. It is just finding and selecting content that will make you run from the room screaming... On another Note, I was impressed that it discovered our Sonos music system, and was really excited when it displayed all the titles in our music library. Then I discovered it couldn't play any of the content because it is encoded in the Apple Lossless format, which the PS3 won't play. Sigh. ... show more

BUY IT NOW!!!
I'm an Amazon Prime member so I get special shipping! So I ordered this on 12/30/2009 at 1:00 am and paid extra for overnight shipping less than $10.00 by the way and at 2:30 pm on 12/31/2009 the fedex man handed me my package. It's freezing outside so the unit was cold so when I got it as much as I wanted to set it up and plug it in and turn it on. I just took it out of the box and set it on the coffee table I took all the contents out of their plastic bags to let them warm up to room temperature. Because I know that something that cold coming into my warm house it going to sweat and it already was sweating SO THE LAST THING YOU WOULD WANT TO DO IS PLUG IT IN! Although from reading some of the reviews on here it's sounds like some people didn't wait and short circuited their PS3 with all that condensation. Well after about 3 hours it was not sweating and was room temperature so I plugged it in and set it up. WOW! THIS IS THE GREATEST GAME CONSOLE OUT THERE! I immediately connected it to my Wireless network which was a breeze! The first thing I did was surf the web watch a couple videos on youtube. Then looking through the menu the ps3 had found my computer and was showing me that I could stream music and pictures wireless to the ps3 to my hdtv which I have my ps3 hooked up through HDMI what an awesome picture. So we had some friends over for new years and we showed them a slide show on our tv of our pics from Cancun last year. Then I downloaded Tiger Woods and played a couple games it looks just like your watching it on tv. I also have the NETFLIX disk so I entered that and we've been streaming movies it works flawless.
