  • thoroughly enjoyed this book
I liked that this book was seeped in Black culture. The focus is on a complicated topic that is well written for a young audience. The characters were well written and believable.

  • Playing the cards you’re dealt - this award-winner will be a good read!!!
Front cover of brand new book is dog-eared! Unacceptable packaging and handling!!! Reason for one star!

  • Likeable Characters
Smooth reading, short chapters, real kids. The protagonist and his friends are 10, but seemed more like 12 year olds to me. Lots to think about. Also entertaining!

  • Grown up stuff for kids
Is it possible for a story with gambling, alcohol, & drugs to be sweet? This book handles big issues from a kid's perspective and does a great job laying responsibility where it belongs. As Ant prepares for the spades tournament, he learns what it means to be a good partner and a strong young man. I think I'd recommend it for Grades 5+ ... show more

  • GREAT! HUMOROUS!
I read this book with my 4th graders and they truly enjoyed the novel. We laughed numerous times and there are several teaching moments throughout the novel. The story teaches students how to deal with life's obstacles especially when the problems are in the family.

  • Tense and fast-paced
I loved the emergence of the narrator’s point of view and opinions over the course of the story. I loved the believability of Ant’s problems *and* the friends and grownup who helped him figure out how to cope. I loved the balance between the games, the friendship problems, and Roland’s struggles. I know some adults will worry that the themes are too mature for 8-12 year old readers but this is an excellent depiction of real-world problems that kids actually face, with the hopeful and empowering ending that books for kids often have. ... show more
