My experience with this product was...complicated. Or at least my overall feelings about it are. So, when I first got this, I wasn’t completely clear on what it WAS. Was it a shampoo? Or was it just a scalp treatment that needed to be washed off afterward? How do I use it? Luckily, instructions for use are on the listing. I had to reference those, because I could NOT get at the instructions stuck to the bottom of the tub. (They’re affixed as a sticker that you pull apart to reveal the instructions, only mine didn’t peel apart.) I have long, naturally curly hair that I either style curly or straight. Either option takes a LOT of hair product to make it look presentable. I wash my hair every four days or so and start over. So clarifying shampoos and similar are an absolute must for me to get all the product out. Turns out, at its most basic level, that’s really what this is. It’s just the format that’s a little different. So you take a dollop out of the tub and rub it into your scalp. It foams up REALLY well, so it ends up being easy to get all your hair in there, once you’ve got your scalp saturated. I really liked the lather part, and the fact that it doesn’t get all drippy and run down into my eyes. So it was easy to lather up my scalp, get my hair in on the action, pile it all on the top of my head and go about the rest of my shower. Bonus points for that experience, definitely. Here’s where it gets complicated. Years ago, I had a terrible reaction to hair dye when my stylist switched between major brands and didn’t mention it. I don’t know whether it was an allergic reaction, a chemical burn, or both. But it burned like crazy and afterward, the entire top several layers of skin on my scalp fell off. This product felt exactly the same way. Truthfully, I kind of panicked a bit. But I had read the ingredients beforehand and remembered that this product was billed as “invigorating,” so I had to keep telling myself it wasn’t the same thing at all. And it’s really not. For most people, the icy cold “burning” sensation is probably a pleasant novelty. For me, not so much. In the end, though, the results were fantastic. My hair was completely clean. As a clarifying product, this is really top-notch. As I mentioned initially, though, the format is a little strange. It’s like a thick cream and it’s got weird chunks in it. (Still not sure what those were.) But it does a fantastic job of removing product residue and really does make your scalp feel invigorated.

Update - I originally gave this scalp scrub 4 stars due to the cost and not having compared to other scalp scrubs. I’m here to update and say this scalp scrub is worth every penny and blows other products out of the water! This product lathers up so nicely you literally need the smallest amount to cover your head. You can get a lot of use out of one jar and I’m very careful about only getting a small amount because 1. It lathers up like crazy and 2. I’m not ready to run out of this amazing product. I don’t have to put any extra hair products in my hair to keep it looking fresh and smooth. It’s touchable soft and frizz free and smells like you were at a salon. This is my favorite product I’ve discovered and I’ve started branching out and trying other Philip B products solely based on this scalp scrub. Philip B Peppermint Avocado Scalp Scrub Review This is my first scalp scrub and I have to say, I am so in love with this process and this product. The results were immediate and long lasting. The instructions are pretty basic, I wasn't exactly sure if I was supposed to use shampoo with this or not, it just says wet the hair, add this, and slowly add more water to lather, then use conditioner afterwards. So it doesn't really say anything about shampoo. So I omitted the shampoo the first time, wondering if that was right or not, but my goodness, once I started drying my hair I couldn't believe how silky soft and clean it felt. I don't know how to truly explain the clean feeling, it just felt fresh. Even when I was using it in the shower, it left my hair feeling, I don't want to say stripped, but my hair had that almost rubber feeling. The scrub has a nice refreshing peppermint scent and it has the slightest cooling feeling on the scalp. Once my hair was dry, I couldn't get over how silky smooth the roots felt. The day after I washed my hair, it still felt silky and clean as the first day when I dried it. Really impressed with this scrub and amazed at the long lasting results. I will continue to use and love and use again until I need to order this again. Scalp scrubs are literally where its at for making your hair come alive again. I gave 4 stars because while I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product, I'm not sure the value for the money is there. There might be more affordable products out there ( I don't know, this was my first one so I can't compare) but I'd imagine there are other decent products on the market for less $$
