  • not another five star review
Face it, if you are reading the five star reviews on this crap product you are just trying to talk yourself into making the purchase. Forget it! Run away as fast as you can. This electronic ignition is just going to burn out your coil in record time.

  • What was I waiting for?
What the heck was I waiting for? 1988 470 motor now runs like a clock. ( yes Runs! ) didn't need to adjust timing. Just put it in had to shave the rotor a smidge but still took about 5 minutes . Idles better , more power wow! Using old coil runs fine.

  • Could have killed my family dead in the water!
I purchased the Pertronix 40511 Flame-Thrower 40,000 volt 3.0 in conjunction with the PertTronix 1146A Ignitor to convert my 1983 Mercruiser 3.7 470 to electronic ignition. This is the second time I have purchased this pair. The first time I got everything installed, the boat ran great for about fifteen minutes then started to miss horribly. Luckily I had tools and the mechanical points plate with me. Fifteen minutes at the sand bar and I was back out pulling tubes. I sent that first set back frustrated. Eventually I figured it must be a fluke. I had to try again, I just wanted that nice fast start and reliable electronic ignition on my awesome 3.7 470. I have owned the boat for years and the only issues I have ever had are points needing to be set/cleaned. So I bought this pair again, I was sure I was going to have success. I installed it all just like I did the first time. Running the boat on muffs in the driveway I turned the ignition key to start the engine. Turned over didn't fire, but... the power wire from the electronic ignition plate definitely started on fire. Burning right up. Its an electronic fire so I blew it out and it started right back up. I burned/cut the hell out of my finger grabbing the burning wire and pulling it to break the circuit. Conveniently the fire cauterized the cut caused by the wire which I had to break. These wires are not that far from the fuel system, this could have been much worse. I'm not a master mechanic but I am not an idiot, there was something wrong with my first one and there was something very different and dangerously wrong with my second. Maybe its the coil. At first I didn't know what wire burned up. Luckily it was the Pertronix wire and not part of my fully intact wiring harness. I am very relieved I am not shopping or a new wiring harness. Now all the power on my boat is completely dead. I'm hoping it just dumped the battery charge into this wire fire. I do not know yet. Maybe it damaged something else? The wire was all melted and burned inside the cap, burned and melted outside the cap, it just burned away right up near the ignition coil. I am definitely not ever going to try this again. Instead I am just going to keep honing my mechanical ignition gap setting and cleaning skills. I am also just going to keep an extra mechanical ignition plate all gapped and ready in the boat. So I can switch them out whenever I need to. If this fire happened with the cowl down while under way, my whole family could have been dead on the water. ... show more

  • Works better than described.
Rarely would I leave a review on a product. Been a mechanic for 50 yrs. usually very skeptical on aftermarket parts. Bought this kit for an old forklift, it is easier to install than to replace points! When finished had much hotter spark, perfect timing and I am impressed. Now if it lasts I’ll be even more pleased. ... show more

  • What a difference!
1986 Mercruiser 170 (3.7L 4 cylinder) - installed this a few weeks ago and love it. Started having the old "back fire" notification that the points were out of adjustment again. Found this pertronix ignitor and the 45,000 volt coil and she purrs like a mad cat now! NOTE: the plastic ring that goes on the distributor must be seated with a deep socket and light taps from a small hammer. If you don't seat it properly, your rotor will come off inside the cap. Lightly tap it into place, and make darn sure your rotor seats properly!!! ... show more

  • Whoopie-- no points
When I went to my local marine shop to get points for my Mercruiser Stern Drive was I ever in for a shock. The point and condenser set I used to pay $3 to $4 for was now $44. I decided it was time to make the switch. I have installed Pertronix systems in two of my classic cars without incident so I ordered the replacement for my boat. Installation was simple and quick. Since I take my boat to places where a stalled engine could be dangerous I didn't want anything unreliable and so far I have not had to swim home. Just be careful to check and re-set your timing. When I installed this device it radically changed my timing. Just in case something happens I kept the old system on board. ... show more
