  • Great Book To Introduce You To Perfumery!
This was required reading for a program at work (fragrance house), and i loved it ! Super light read; you'll finish in a day or two max. I felt it gave a great overview of the industry and the history of perfumery, highlighting key perfumers & fragrances. Impressed with its overall relevance, considering it’s over 15 years old ... show more

  • Excellent book for Those wishing to learn the art of Perfume
I believe many of the negative reviews for this book are due to a misunderstanding of its purpose. Jean-Claude Ellena is sharing his vision with us. He is letting us into his creative process, so that we might see what being a perfumer means to him. It is like Monet sharing his methods and the thinking processes he uses with us. any artist knows that true art is more than technique.. Understanding that perfumery is not merely technical, but art...art with the intangible, is what is being premised. There is much to learn here. I also believe that this was written in a humble manner. No where did I see arrogance of a preference for all things French. Many of the classic perfumes he mentions here are French...try to name some early classic perfumes that are not. It is a lovely, lyrical book. Other than the charts not showing properly on the Kindle version I bought, it is well translated and I didn't really notice any editing problems. If you are looking for dirt and gossip about the world of perfume, this is not a book for you. If you want to see into the mind of one of the world's greatest perfumers, buy it. You won't be disappointed! ... show more

  • Surprisingly good history
It's a strange kind of subject. In fact, it would never occur to me that there's enough of a history of perfume to make a book, but I was quite wrong. There's a lot of back story and Ellena give it all in his book. Since fragrance is his business, Ellena also gives you a sense of how the perfume industry works. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in business, because Ellena's discussion on the creative process gives a sense of how products are created. The weakness is in the writing. Ellena is not a skilled writer, and it shows. Yet he did keep and hold my interest. However, a bit more skill at laying out the story would turned this into a great book. Still, it was worth reading and I would reccomend it. ... show more

  • Sharing is good.
I found the content of the book interesting and it is generous of the author to allow the wider audience make an inquiry into his way of thinking and his approach to the perfume making. I particularly enjoyed the chapter about the path from the idea to the final "opera" -forgive my Italian here, but in my opinion this word is the most accurate concerning the scents.. The book is more like introductory manual to the domain of perfume (companies, marketing, general process of perfume making, author's particular approach to it) rather than the anthropological essay about the meaning of perfumes, history, legends and all this "exciting" staff about our hobbies. Providing that you are open to the gift from the author, exactly that one, he is going to make, you should not be disappointed. You will get to know how this industry is seen by a person with great esteem as a perfumer. ... show more

  • To take fragments of odors and swirl them together to create a beautiful moment is so incredibly magical
I have always been fascinated by perfume and how scent resurrects a memory. I found this book very interesting as he explained how music is linear..one note at a time...but scent is made up of fractions of other odors which hit you all at once and then continue to change as the fragrance drifts on the air. It brings such an emotional response. I had not thought of how many "molecules" make up a fragrance and how some are forward and some float in the background. There is a lot of technical information in the book but that only helped me understand what an art perfume is. To take fragments of odors and swirl them together to create a beautiful moment is so incredibly magical! ... show more

  • Should be considered a manifesto, a great one!
You dont't buy this book if you're averagely interested in perfume. But, if you are interested in perfumery, and how perhaps the worlds most charismatic yet rebellious nose actually thinks, reflects and works? Then this is the book for you. Ellena reveals a huge secret about the materials that he keeps in his collection, and actually gives all the information you need to organise your "perfumer's organ" the excact same way as himself. For me, this book is invaluable, when it comes imspiration and general talk about raw-materials that seems impossible to find elsewhere. I just recently bought his new book that came after this one, where he picks up the thread about materials here and there, but also devoted a whole section about formulation of the very ingredients listed in this book. After reading this book it felt like I had just been speending a few days inside Ellenas house in Cabris, where he does all his formulation. ... show more

  • Fails to Deliver
This book disappoints on several levels. While touching upon several aspects of the world of perfume, the author's musings are more often than not confusing. This book could use a thorough editing. But even then, it would garner no more than, say, 3 stars. Ellena's jumps around the various topics he proposes to answer, and rarely does more than give us cursory opinions. And opinionated he is, showing a marked preference for everything French, what a surprise! He dismisses major creative talent on this side of the Atlantic, and completely misses exciting trends in perfume today, including a return to the use of naturals, especially by boutique perfumers. Ellena's book is more tease than treatise. Despite some interesting ideas, this book is thin, both in pages and ultimately in content. The tone of this small book is often pretentious and more than occasionally annoying. Prior to purchase, I noted its rather negative reviews. However, my passion for the subject of perfume prevailed, and I bought it nonetheless. The book is not without merit, and clearly Ellena is a force within the industry. Though not familiar with the perfumes he's composed, I hope he is better at making perfume than he is at writing about it. ... show more
