Description

Today, the all-inclusive resort has become a tourist industry standard in the Caribbean, which many North Americans and Europeans enjoy every year. However, back in 1948, the concept was unheard of until the man who brought holiday camps to Britain in the 1930s recognized that air travel was on the rise and the Caribbean was opening up.This is the story of how the first all-inclusive was built, partially opened, closed, partially renovated, reopened, fully renovated and then finally closed down for good. Included are four original maps of the resort showing its many changes over the years and other drawings. Read more

  • Thoroughly researched history of pioneering development on Grand Bahama
Depending on the decade, it may have been called Butlin's Vacation Viallage, the Grand Bahama Club or the Grand Bahama Hotel and Country Club, but to islanders it was always known as 'West End'. John Sliz has written a detailed and well illustrated history of the resort envisioned by Billy Butlin and eventually realised by Charles Sammons. It is a fascinating story and a valuable addition to written history of Grand Bahama. A nostalgic read for those who lived on or visited the island in the boom times. ... show more

  • Those Were the Days!
This book was like taking a trip down memory lane... My wife and I met at the Jack Tar Village Resort back in 1988. We were both sad to see it close but saw the writing on the wall even back then. John Sliz does a great job of walking the reader through the build-up and numerous transitions of the amazing resort in West End. Grand Bahama Island has gone though many changes and it is very different place than what it was in the late 80's. We went back this year to celebrate our 25th wedding Anniversary and although SCUBA diving was our main focus, visiting the old Jack Tar site was a close second. We plan to return and stay at the current hotel on site next year (30th Ann. of when we met - I know, corny :) ) and this book will definitely make the trip! It was a paradise without question and now I have a better understanding of it's history thanks to "Paradise Found and Lost". ... show more
