  • great features, harness system requires fine tuning
Color: Black Size: Small/Medium
i love the features on this bag. It has pretty much everything I wanted -top loader (to avoid wasted competing space with panel loaders) with side zipper access to the main compartment (to overcome shortcomings of most top loaders: visualizing and retrieving things at the bottom of the pack) -separate zippered bottom compartment and distinct rain cover compartment (removable rain cover included) -suspended trampoline mesh back harness system to reduce back sweat -trekking pole stow-and-go system for storage without taking off pack -dual zippered hip belt pockets -wide hip belt buckle and straps to reduce pressure on belly -side compression straps that can be run underneath the side mesh pockets rather than over (this option is no longer available on the updated model) -large and tall mesh side pockets that fit large bottles and prevent toppling over -lid brain with zippered outer pocket and inner mesh pocket which allows for storage inside the brain as well as extra storage potential between the brain and pack body (sadly the brain is not removable or floating, which would be especially nice for this pack because the elastic on this pack's brain is more elastic than expected, leading so some resistance to fully lifting and scrunching upon opening) I can also confirm that a 15 inch laptop in its soft case will fit very easily into the main compartment (both via the draw string top and the side access zipper) and if you leave the divider beneath it suspended to separate the main compartment from the sleeping bag area, you have a built in suspension/padding system to protect your laptop in case you set your bag down too fast. I am hoping this bag will pass for a carry on or personal item (with the Small it seems like it just might...) so I can use this for general traveling purposes domestically. I wish Osprey chose to put a front mesh shove-it pocket instead of the zippered front compartment, which is far less versatile and functional when fully packed! The dual access side mesh pockets not found on this bag but found on others is awesome for easy access to water bottles and should be incorporated. Also, I wish the sleeping bag divider could be fully removable. Finally, the thickened seam around the area where the sleeping bag compartment zipper runs makes zipping around it more difficult. A minor grievance, but something to consider for future designs. If the harness system is digging into your back/shoulder blades, it may be because the load lifter/stabilizer straps are too tight! Like many others, I find the bag pretty comfortable even with 15 lbs of weight. Havent tested on trail yet but hopeful! ... show more

  • Nice bag, but has an identity crisis
Color: Eclipse Blue Size: Medium/Large
This bag is confused about what it is. It's almost big enough to be a backpacking bag, but it would be tight unless your kit is pretty minimal (at which point maybe you should get an ultralight bag!). It's also somewhat heavy for the amount of space. This is basically a rucksack version of the Stratos 34 with a brain added. For me the added storage and the trade off of the narrow top opening was not really all that worth it. I think you can fit much more in this bag than the 34, but at a certain point you need to ask yourself what this bag is really for. I personally ended up with the 34. For me, and I think a lot of people, I mostly need a day pack and a backpacking pack (separate pieces of gear), not really anything in between. If you do lots of winter excursions, this may be a good bag for you because of the extra space and lashing options. If you need a bag for climbing gear approaches, this may work well. Besides some specialize uses, I find this bag to be an odd size and weight that doesn't really fit well into my outdoors kit. Your mileage may vary of course. It's a well made and comfortable backpack for sure, but definitely consider the balance of size and weight and if it works for you! ... show more

  • Good pack but not as comfortable as I hoped
Color: Black Size: Medium/Large
I like this pack overall, has tons of features, perfect interior size for a day or overnight pack, and handles the weight well. Pockets are well designed and laid out. Hydration system is easy to access. Side internal zipper makes it nice to get to gear without dumping everything out. My biggest gripe is how narrow the back support system is. If you are a guy with broad shoulders, I find it runs right on the shoulder blades. I’m only 5’8 - 175 so I’d think on taller/wider people it could be very uncomfortable. The suspension system could stand to be a little wider to cover that area. I find myself constantly adjusting straps to keep those pressure points off my shoulder blades after even short distances. I ended up adding padding on that area to help this problem. Other than the support width, I enjoy the functionality of the pack. Wouldn’t weigh it out much more than about 35lbs or it becomes uncomfortable on uneven terrain. If I were purchasing again, I’d probably go with the Osprey 50 over the 36 to gain a little more room and a little more comfort. Might do that anyways and give this pack to a teenager or the wife. ... show more

  • This is the backpack you need!!
This is an excellent, reliable, incredibly light backpack for hiking, camping, traveling, etc. for anyone! The Osprey Stratos 36 sm/med backpack is only a few pounds. Which for all the features and spaces to pack away items, this is a huge plus. After having this for several years and using the backpack for hiking (rain and shine), canoeing, filling it to its max and overnight camping, this is a very well-made, quality pack. There isn't a tear anywhere as you can see in our pictures. All of the straps are easy to adjust while the pack is empty or full. Hiking/walking with the pack you can adjust the straps with ease and they stay in place. The top lid of the pack has two different compartments, one inside and out. You can reach the outer one when you have the pack on. Also, if you have it on there's a zipper that opens the main compartment of your pack, this is on the left side. This is nice to have when you need to get something quick and do not want to unpack your bag. The main inner part has a large pocket that is against the back. We've found this to be a perfect spot for our CamelBak 2L reservoir. Fits it perfectly. The compression, hip and sternum straps are great as they all play a part in adjusting the backpack comfortably to you. The hip belt pockets are convenient to have for those smaller items you need quick access to. SO MANY compartments and features on this backpack that make your trip easier. Buy it, highly recommend! ... show more
