Early Printing Errors Fixed
Format: Paperback
The errors that appeared in the early printing of this text have been corrected in the later printings that are now being made available from the publisher. This book is one of the only comprehensive classical optics textbooks at the advanced undergraduate level, and as such, fills an important niche. Practical material, such as image aberrations and radiometry, are handled here at a very accessible level, which makes the book a valuable professional reference. ... show more

state of the physical is not the best
Format: Paperback
The content of the book is very good, but the state of the physical is not the best, buy second at low prices; but I have previously purchased used books on Amazon and I have come as new.

I am disappointed in the quality of this textbook
Format: Paperback
Good optics textbooks are hard to come by. (Saleh & Teich is a notable exception.) But this is solidly the worst textbook I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. The textbook is rife with errors, even the "corrected" 1986 edition. It complicates all the concepts and doesn't explain them briefly. The paragraphs don't distinguish technical annotations, explanations, applications, and caveats. It's impossible to skim, and reading it carefully is not what you're looking for when you're using this in a classroom. The reasoning is difficult to follow, especially when an equation / variable / graphic that it's discussing isn't found on the same page (or even the same chapter)--I don't remember what A is from 3 chapters ago! It cannot be used as a quick-reference book, due to the inability to find equations that written out for easy application. In short, I do not recommend this book, and if you must get it for a class, rent it--it's not worth your money to keep it around. ... show more
