  • Great for beginners or woodworkers with limited space
Format: Paperback
This is a good book to get the creative juices flowing and to work through some basic beginner projects. I bought this book because I picked up woodworking as a hobby this past year, but I live in an apartment in NY. One of the challenges that comes with that is limited space, limited access to lumber you can transport home, and noise complaints if projects get too lengthy. - This provided a medium for me to begin thinking in terms of "what can I make from a single board", which solved the space and transport problem. - The diagrams are great for getting in the habit of measuring all in advance rather than as you go, which solved the noise problem as then all cuts can be completed in a couple of minutes with the right power tools and skill. - My only complaint would be that the text in the diagrams is too small, as though the pages were photo-copies of plans once on 8x10 sheets and then reformatted to fit smaller spaces. Other than that, great book! ... show more

  • Useful to learn to maximize the use of wood in planning
Format: Paperback
The one board concept intrigued me, but after buying the book and trying several projects came to conclusion: why should we limited ourselves to one board? What is important is great design and relatively simple construction. But it is a great lesson in planning carefully to maximize the use of lumber and could serve to motivate users to design their own projects. The author or editor slipped in in the breakfast tray project which created frustration. The width of the boards that make up the tray bottom is mislabeled and is too narrow. My son carefully followed the instructions in the drawing and after joining the boards ended up with tray bottom that was too narrow . There would have actually been enough wood in the one board but the error would have had to have been caught by us before cutting. Not catching the error beforehand required purchasing another board to complete the tray, kind of defeating the one board idea. ... show more
