I was hesitant buying the extra large as I wear a size 10. After reading some of the reviews, I decided to go one size up and it was a good choice. If you prefer your socks tighter stick with your size. One last thing, use a pair of scissors to cut the plastic holder, don't pull them apart or you'll end up putting a hole in your socks, duh!
