  • Sure makes a difference.
I did the math to figure out that I'd lived with my last New Balance Trail Runners for at least 3.5yrs. I don't think I realize that time & weight simply wear down the foam's ability to absorb shock/weight. I'm normally a size 10.5 W, so for basic trail ups & downs I chose an 11, just to have enough room to NOT have my toe hit the front on the way down hills, as I also wear wool socks that are a little thicker & better cushioning that most cotton, or cotton/poly/spandex blend socks. It just works for me, and I'm NOT actually Trail "RUNNING" ... but walking up hills, gasping for breath on the steeper rises, and then trying not to trip on a root on the way down, or have my feet slide out from underneath me on the descent & yanking my back to save myself, and regain balance. Just "Full Disclosure" kind of stuff. And with no Bears, Mountain Lions, Wolves, Great White Sharks ... or other apex predators in the woods, the chance you'll get me running on a trail is pretty slim. Simply put, the whole foot bed is extremely comfortable & makes a massive difference in each stride. They are not inexpensive, and with comfort also comes some compromise in side-to-side stability, so I'll have to be more careful in foot placement, and make sure the laces are as tight as comfortable. As usual, it's nice to know most New Balance come in wider widths, and many of the components are still MADE/Assebled in the USA. That's important to me, in an era where were we complain about paying someone $15/hr. ... show more

  • Cushion for the pushin' and then some.
Size: Medium Color: Black/Blaze
After trying a whole lot of other trail shoes in the $80-100 range I decided to go ahead and spend the extra cash and get the high dollar max cushion model that new balance offers. The difference is remarkable. The materials in the upper are much higher quality, the toe cap is nice, and nice padding around the ankle. The laces are stretchy and don't require a double knot. The midsole is like running on a memory foam mattress but without sacrificing any response. I run on trails with sand, rocks, and hills and I haven't stumbled or felt clumsy at all. Excellent traction in all conditions. Not heavy at all. My knees feel so much better after a 3 mile run since I started wearing these. ... show more

  • The cushioning and helps with balance
I have been a member of RRSports for 30 years. This is my new favorite. I have problems with balance and this is the best fitting and stable shoe I have worn

  • Very cushy
This shoe is very cushioned, it's similar to the Hoka style running shoes with a large cushion on the bottom. For that reason, it feels very soft. Not the type of running shoes that make you feel close to the ground.

  • Great shoe except one small annoyance
These shoes are as comfortable as they come, especially if you need x-wide shoes like me. But at a high price point the shoes are missing a stay on the tongue. As such my left shoe tongue twists left within 10 strides and creates an odd feel. I have no idea why NB decided to omit this standard item that comes even on cheap shoes. ... show more

  • Great shoe
Fit as expected even with orthopedic inserts. Love the slightly stretch strings. Feet are well protected from stones and sharp rocks. Toe protection is good.

  • Good shoe poor value at MSRP of over $150 in my (4E) size
The shoe itself is great. Feels like a significantly firmer Fresh Foam More v1 cushion wise out of the box which is fine. The fitting around the ankle does seem to do a good job of keeping pebbles out despite the low cut which is nice. The rubber bottom is WAY more durable than the Fresh Foam More v1 or v2. The knobby bottom grips stuff well and still walks smooth enough on pavement to be fine as well. Size wise the width is fine and correctly labelled BUT I would recommend going up at least half a size on the length. NB used to be spot on with their shoe size several years ago but now they run consistently small by .5-1 size to me! Not a huge deal so long as you know before you order. Why give it 3 stars then? Price. This shoe is over $150 in my size which is a 4E. 4E anything always cost more but this getting ridiculous. Especially for a shoe that NB expects you to replace in 6 months! I'm going to use it for a hell of a lot longer than 6 months at this price!! I only got it because I got some extra cash recently but otherwise would've never bothered with this one. ... show more
