I've been wearing New Balance shoes for several decades. They've always been my preferred athletic shoe because of their generous room for my wide size 13 foot. This shoe failed to match the comfort I had grown to expect. I ordered a size 13 extra wide. It barely fits my foot, feeling snug even after loosening the laces. The laces, by the way, are too short, even if I snug them up. I can barely get them tied. That seems odd on an extra wide shoe. The heal is also short, giving me the sense that shoe is eating my socks. The shoe does indicate a size 13 extra wide inside the tongue--just what I ordered. But it doesn't feel like other size 13 extra wide New Balance shoes I've worn in the past. Hard to say if I got a mislabeled shoe or if New Balance is skimping on material. Regardless, I'm disappointed.

I had previously purchase the 520, and I was generally happy with it. Like all New Balance shoes, they don't last as long as I'd like. In 24 years of buying NB, I've had one pair that lasted longer than 12 months. Most New Balance shoes, various models, last about 9 months before they start falling apart on the inside behind the heel. I've accepted that and moved past that part. My issue with this pair is that the 520 changed designed from 10 months ago. My previous paid fit perfectly. I ordered the same size and model. The new pair is too tight on the top of my foot. At first I thought it was me. When compared to the old NB 520, several things are different in the design. My suggestion to New Balance, if you change the design, change the model number.

The media could not be loaded. I’m a big fan of new balance and I got these just to have a generally black pair. They are 13 wide and they fit ever-so-slightly more snug than my 880’s but still very comfy and very affordable. I only wish they’d include longer laces. The insoles are removable and have a slight arch support and slight bounce in the cushioning. The main sole (outer sole) is very flexible but also feels durable. The mesh upper is super airy, breathable and light. These are not water proof by any stretch of the imagination, but that’s not what they were designed for. Just good, affordable everyday sneaker. Perfect.

Good heel padding and seem well built. Not too small but more snug than anticipated. I have several other pair of running shoes so I have a good comparison. If you shoe size is close I would recommend going 1/2 size larger.

My husband loves this shoe and has bought several pair to ensure he has them as needed. New Balance likes to change the style on him, so when they do he has to try out new pairs until he finds one that helps him as he’s on his feet all day. These feel great and keep him comfortable throughout his long 10-12 hour days. Once he feels they are starting to break down as all shoes do, he has a new pair stashed under the bed ready to trade out and the old pair becomes his yard work shoes until her has worn them completely out. He loves them so much, he has four pairs stashed away for future use.

Several years ago I realized I had to wear "wide" shoes. 11.5 was too small, and 12 was too large. The small ones would pressure the sides, so it was a no brainer to switch to 11.5 W. However this particular one, replacing my older, and no longer made New Balance was not as comfortable. I double checked, yes I bought and received the wide size. And I used it a while to "break in". Yet I would prefer to have the older one. That being said, I am still giving it four stars. The fabric is really breathable, and works great for outdoors in the summer. The soles are comfortable. And it works for both active use, and daily walking.
