The Most Comfortable Shoe I've Ever Worn
The MX1012 has been out for some time now. I have the MX1011 (i.e. last year's model) and would rate them a 7 (or maybe an 8) out of 10. But of course, I'd rather have a 9 or a 10. Months ago when I first saw that the 1012's were released, I almost ordered them without thinking about it, hoping for a little improvement over the already-good 1011. But I haven't liked New Balance's running shoes lately so I thought I'd wait for a review before buying. Months went by and no reviews for the 1012 could be found anywhere on the internet. I found it uncanny considering how popular New Balance is, and how this is their flagship cross-trainer. So I took a leap of faith and ordered these. These are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. Not just athletic shoes, but any shoe. These make me want to walk. Even though NB is known for their wide assortment of running shoes, I haven't liked their running shoes for at least a couple years now. They feel hard and knobby inside and I don't feel sure-footed when jogging on a treadmill. So one day I thought I'd try my 1011's for treadmill jogging and it was great. But they're getting worn and they feel a quarter-size too small. So I ordered the 1012 a half size bigger than my 1011's. Doing so makes them feel a quarter-size too big, but not really in a bad way. They are SO comfortable. They feel light and cushiony. I jogged 3 miles on a treadmill at the gym in these shoes and it was so easy, I didn't even notice that I passed the 3 mile mark. Usually, I'm staring at the mileage counter just waiting for the 3 mile mark to hit so I can slow to a walk. I haven't tried these on an elliptical yet, but based on how wonderful they are for walking and jogging, I can't imagine any reason why they wouldn't rule for the elliptical as well. As with the 1011, these are conservatively styled. I'm good with that. I really just wanted a basic looking black shoe that would do everything, and this one hits it out of the ballpark. I love this shoe and may buy a second pair to put in the closet in case I don't like the 1013's when they come out. I used to think that a do-it-all cross-trainer couldn't be very good at any one thing, and that dedicated shoes were needed. I was wrong. This shoe is great for everything. ... show more

Love the New Balance MX1012
I've worn New Balance for years due to wide feet. Usually the $50 all leather cross-trainers found at local sporting goods stores. I decided to upgrade this time. Was looking for a cross-trainer with good cushioning, solid support and breathable upper. Originally purchased the MX813, which isn't available in 4E but rather 2E width. It was a nice shoe but not wide enough. Spent a bit more than I wanted on the MX1012, but it was available in 4E. Super comfortable, fit was spot on. Nice footbed support and upper support. Really like the mesh upper on the forefoot. It's a looser weave than most which adds to the breathability. I've worn them only a week now, but find them very comfortable and I like the look (also available in white with grey and blue trim). They seem to be well constructed (time will tell). This is one of the New Balance models assembled in the USA, which I think adds to the quality (and to the price). Money well spent I think, and Amazon was having a shoe sale when I ordered so saved a few bucks. ... show more

Trendy teen loves them

I think these are hideous, but my trendy high school daughter loves them. No cap, or whatever they say. Fit true to size, comfortable, perfect for the middle aged dad or teenage Adam Sandler in your life.

Truly excellent all-around athletic shoes
I owned a pair of the 1011 cross trainers, and wore them until they were ugly and nearly falling to pieces. I used them for everything from gym classes to traipsing about Europe, to casual errands on the bike, and they were so much more comfortable and supportive than the various Nike Air trainers I had been buying for many years. But all good things must come to an end and when it was finally time to retire the 1011s, I could not find a replacement pair. After doing more than a small amount of research, and trying on several pairs of New Balance, ASICS and Nike trainers at a local Foot Locker store, I pulled the trigger and purchased the MX1012s through Amazon (what can I say; I don't have the luxury of spending more than I have to). The 1012s were great from Day One and they fit my foot like a glove (due in part to the multi-width sizing New Balance offers). Not only are they light, well-cushioned and wearable all day long, but they are well-constructed and the type of mesh used for the majority of the shoe really vents foot heat most effectively. Sure, I would have liked a bit more forefoot cushioning, as some have mentioned here, but these trainers remain the best Jack-of-all Trades athletic shoes you are likely to find. My one small complaint is New Balance's continued insistence on using that wretched metallic silver leather-like trim material in their shoes. Seriously, guys? *eyeroll* ... show more

Great for non-running
I bought these because the New Balance 990's hurt my feet while doing Insanity classes and anything that wasn't running. Obviously, that was the problem as the 990's are "running" shoes and an outstanding one at that. I wish I had been more educated on quality footwear while serving in the Marines, but I digress. The MX1012's are a new experience for me, solely designed for cross training, which can be classes, elliptical or general use while lifting weights. They are extremely comfortable and offer a snug fit provided you get the proper size. These don't offer much in regards to arch support, but I think that's on purpose for the type of shoe. I wear a 10 and there is just under an inch of space, which the way the shoe is built works fine. You don't want a part of the shoe that can rub on the fronts of your toes anyways. I had a good test run during an Insanity class, during a plyometric, which involves a lot of jumping and my feet did not cramp or bother me. Mind you this was my first time and I have to break the shoes in some more. The price was fine for the quality and if you take care of them by only wearing them during workouts and untying after use, they'll last a long time. There may be better types out there, but as I said I'm new to really researching quality shoes and so far, I've had 3 pairs of New Balance and have been very happy with them. Buy a pair for each style of exercise as I said the 990's are excellent for running and these MX1012's are perfect for other gym/class use. ... show more

Excellent shoes
I use these shoes for walking. I go about 25 miles a week and have been doing that for the last 10 years. I've always used New Balance but these are the first "high-end" priced shoes I've tried and was amazed at how good these shoes are. They are so much better than any other shoes I've worn. The only negative I found was the tongue is too short. It makes it a bit difficult to put on and I can't use all the eyelets for the laces because the laces will come up to the very top of and above the tongue. I consider this negative a minor issue. Would have been a 5 star except for this issue. I still would rate these shoes as excellent. Great support and at the same time, it's like walking on a cloud........they are just about perfect. ... show more

A fine running shoe if you have the $$ to spend
I bought this running shoe among the field of about 8 New Balance models. I am a moderately supinated (wear the heels on the outside) runner, so I needed a good motion control shoe. The MR1012 is a little heavier than I like but for short distances (<3 miles), the shoe serves its purpose and does it well. The new lace design helps the shoe stay secure (but that's easily remedied with double knots). I didn't want to spend the full retail price on the shoe so I looked here for it. Remarkably my size was a Warehouse Deal. Snagged it and haven't looked back. I've put about 50 miles on this shoe now and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again if the price is right--the MR1012 is a Cadillac among the NB models. I firmly believe in rotating shoes and not holding back on quality. If you haven't tried a New Balance shoe, I would try a pair. The one other benefit I will add about New Balance is that they produce their shoes in a variety of widths to accommodate most feet. Others make that claim, but I always have more luck finding the width I need in stock. ... show more

One of the best for the price
This is the second pair of 1012's I've bought. I love this shoe. I have a wide foot with a high instep so most shoes feel uncomfortable to me. This shoe is comfortable right out of the box. It also gives me a noticeable improvement with my level of fatigue after a good workout or when I'm on my feet all day. The shoes are durable and I know because I've put them through some hell and it's frankly amazing how well they hold up for a shoe of this type. I think that's typical for NB though. Their shoes are well built and can take some punishment. I like the cushion in these shoes. It's especially noticeable when I'm running. The instep support when your foot rolls from heal to toe during a run is great. I like the 'bumpy' laces too. These laces help to keep my shoes from coming untied. I wish all shoes came with these kind of laces. This is one of my favorite shoes and it performs for me as well or better than $130 shoes I've owned.
