This was a break the ice gift to lead into a bigger gift card gift. When you have todays world and try some fun things from yesteryear - it is best to come over the too with a bigger something. Nerf is awesome. This was for an 11 year old boy that has a 14 year old sister. I got two. They had a blast foe about 20-30 minutes. It was longer than I thought Now-it is lightweight. It is strong enough to send the darts across the room at a level shot almost. Plenty of ammo for a good time. If you get two-reload as they are shot at you. Trigger never broke. Ammo always shot. I bought the brown-box version of the Elite SurgeFire for myself (cos that's adulting, buying gifts for yourself!). Mine had a paper with assembly instructions, I was up and gunning in less than 2 mins. Although I prefer one-handed operation in my Nerf weapons (like the Hammershot, my favorite model), this one holds enough ammo that I don't have to worry as much about reloading. It completely replaces my former "big" gun, the Nerf Elite Retaliator, which had magazines you could switch out (the drum on the SurgeFire is NOT exchangeable, especially loaded). But the Retaliator was strictly single shot and had to be charged/pumped on the top back of the receiver. Which brings me to the true beauty of this beast: the actual SurgeFire mode, which is as close as you can get to automatic without batteries. (No batteries to worry about is my other main requirement in Nerf war.) Hold the trigger down and keep pumping the front handle, you can spray until you're out of ammo. Works great. You can also partially reload on the run and and battle on. It's almost impossible to fully load the drum, due to the way it rotates, but 17 darts is still excellent for this price point. Speaking of ammo, the other improvement here is that the SurgeFire can use any of the Nerf Ammo in production for the last 10-15 years, including the fairly large number of suction-cup tipped darts we have that DON'T fit in the magazines for the Retaliator. Much like the Hammershot, the accuracy and range are pretty inconsistent, not having a true barrel to stabilize the darts much. The darts hit fairly level and hard out to about 15-20 feet. After that, there's significant drop. I'm no engineer, but I personally think this has much more to do with the ammo than the design of the weapon. {Ammo that's dirty or bent from use definitely doesn't fly as well, but Amazon frequently offers large quantities of Nerf darts cheap as an "add-on" item, so watch for that, fellow shoppers.} ... show more

I'm very glad with my purchase. What I wanted was a Nerf Strongarm with more ammo, and that's exactly what I got. In my opinion, this is an extremely fun gun to use, as the cocking motion is a lot more dynamic than many other guns. Also, the slam fire of the Surgefire still goes a good distance. Finally, the gun looks way cooler than it does in the picture; the orange is more fiery and the bullet holder has little ridges on it. ... show more
