After saving his allowance for a couple months, our son decided he wanted to spend his money on this compass. He was SO excited when it arrived a couple days later and immediately placed the chain on his belt loop and the compass into his pocket. It was really cool looking! However, the THIRD time he opened the compass, the button broke! Then the brass cover broke right at the hinge. Complete piece of junk. Our son was so upset! Obviously we immediately returned it and went through the refund process with him. This is the downside to Amazon...it may look great in the photos, and even in person...but you really have no guarantee of quality, even if it has the “Amazon’s Choice” label. ... show more

    • Nice antique style compass
The media could not be loaded. This is a really nice antique style compass, and it works really well. I did a test, and compared it with a lensatic compass, and found the direction reading was accurate. One thing to understand, is that this compass it a dry compass, based on the compasses pre-20th century. Compasses from the 20th century onward are wet compasses, in that they are fluid filled, the fluid, usually alcohol or kerosene or mineral oil for older compasses, early 20th century, and Isopar in newer models. The fluid stabilizes and dampens the movement of the compass needle. In the case of a dry compass, like this one, you will need to place the compass on a level surface and not move it to get an accurate directional reading. As any small movement will cause the needle to oscillate and move around. Also, one other thing, this will only give you magnetic North. Many modern compasses will give you True North, with a line to the right indicating Magnetic North. A couple of other things. Do not force the cover beyond where it meets resistance to stop. It is a simple spring loaded hinge and forcing it will damage the hinge. When you close the cover lid, press the release button and gently close the cover, and then release the release button to lock it into place. Also, as this is a dry magnetic compass. When you store it, make sure in is laying flat, with the compass face facing up. This will insure that the needle does not get stuck. As with any quantity handmade device, if you take good care of it, it will last a long time. ... show more

The product did not function very well. The needle would hang up and it was very hard to get an accurate reading. You had to balance it perfectly or it would hang up. This product did not have a quality appearance when I took it out of the box. I was hoping it would be OK; but, found the functionality not good. ... show more

I purchased this item as a gift. The item arrived quickly and was well packaged. I was impressed by the quality of the brass construction and the vintage look the item presented. The compass needle pointed north/south with the precision of my quality hiking compass. Unfortunately, the needle of this item was reverse polarized, pointing south instead of north. I contacted the seller and received an immediate reply. He apologized and quickly offered either a refund or a replacement compass. I chose to replace the item.     • Great-Looking Compass, Lid Broke Off a Week In :(
Really nice, love the leather pouch. With the chain on it, it is kind of hard to button closed though. I would not recommend this for normal use, more of a display piece... we bought this for our eight year-old son to use on outdoor adventures, and the lid got offset and broke off at the hinge from being in his pocket. We wouldn’t buy this one again... our son was pretty upset that it broke. Will have to buy a different style to replace it. ... show more

    • Quality lacking😫
I bought for my son for his 10th birthday, so had it awhile before giving it to him. The hinge on the cover broke the first day, and the metal seems cheap was was even rubbed off a bit near the hinge, disappointing:(
