I don't know if it works. This is a symbolic gift. The chain seems solid and the little pouch is well made. It feels, however, like you can only push the button to open it so many times before it will stop working. I bought this as a Christmas present and took it be engraved. Not only was I impressed by the quality and feel of the compass and the case as well, but so was my engraver! We had never seen a better product from an online purchase! So worth it!

    • Do not waste your money!
After saving his allowance for a couple months, our son decided he wanted to spend his money on this compass. He was SO excited when it arrived a couple days later and immediately placed the chain on his belt loop and the compass into his pocket. It was really cool looking! However, the THIRD time he opened the compass, the button broke! Then the brass cover broke right at the hinge. Complete piece of junk. Our son was so upset! Obviously we immediately returned it and went through the refund process with him. This is the downside to Amazon...it may look great in the photos, and even in person...but you really have no guarantee of quality, even if it has the “Amazon’s Choice” label. ... show more
