Let me start off with the reason why I cannot give five stars to this production: the volume is low. I played it on various hardware and software. On one player on my computer, I would estimate that it plays at 30% of CD volume level, and at about 60 - 70% of other DVDs. Through my TV set I get better results, but still I have to set the player and TV at max volume just to get normal living room volume. The introduction and initial interviews start off at normal volume; it is the concert itself that is soft. It is also hard to hear individual instruments, e.g. you will know that the triangle can usually be heard above other instruments; here we sometimes SEE the triangle being played but we can hardly hear it. The works performed are not given by Amazon above and the durations are not even given on the DVD leaflet, so here they are with approximate duration: Kapp: North Coast, 6:20. This work is pleasant to listen to. Neeme Järvi conducts. Tormis: I Had Three Beautiful Words for Flute & Male Choir, 6:00. The flute is played well by the very attractive Maarika Järvi; NJ conducts. Quite pleasant for a modern work. Sibelius: Finlandia, 8:00. Paavo Järvi conducts. Eller: Three pieces for Flute and String Orchestra, 10:00. Maarika Järvi on flute with Kristjan Järvi conducting. This is a pleasing work. Nielsen: Three Movements from the Aladdin Suite for Choir & Orchestra, 12:30. These are robust, rhythmic and attractive pieces. Conductor: Kristjan Järvi (Interesting that Nielsen's 'African Dance' uses castanets!:-)) Liszt: Faust Symphony for Orchestra, Organ, Tenor Soloist and Male Choir, 1 hour. This magnificent work is vintage Liszt, where he pulls out all the stops. It is well performed by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and National Male Choir. Conductor, Neemi Järvi. Juhan Tralla, the tenor soloist, is brilliant. Higly recommended performance. In a visual recording of a symphony concert, the camera does not always go to what you are hearing, causing some frustration. In this case, with the low sound level, one does not always KNOW that you are missing something! Let me hasten, however, to emphasize that the camera work is above average for this genre. The sound is stereo. ... show more

  • Jarvi Family Stellar in Celebrating Neeme's 70'th Birthday
What a treat to see a talented father (Neeme) and his gifted sons Paavo and Kristian conducting and daughter Maarika as flute soloist all on one DVD. In addition to the concert, the interviews with the Jarvi family provide entertaining and informative insights. It is also fun to see the conductors as they interact with the orchestra, which is different from what one sees as part of the audience in a concert hall. This DVD was a special find. Bravo! ... show more

  • A very special concert
This is a delightful DVD: the musical selections are appealing, all performances inspired and the flautist as well as the three Järvi conductors in great form. A sense of special occasion pervades the concert, and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Male Choir are on their toes and very good indeed. "Finlandia" stands out as particularly heartfelt, with Paavo Järvi, my favorite conductor on this disk. (If you don't have it yet, by all means get his Beethoven symphonies cycle on DVD with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, just released by Sony: the greatest musical event in years!) I don't know why Neeme Järvi selected Liszt's Faust Symphony for his jubilee concert. It is a slightly problematic piece, not always memorable, at times quite repetitive and not consistently gripping. If you like it, however, this reading may be a fine complement to Bernstein's super-charged performance on DVD. Järvi is more analytical and, with his wonderfully responsive Estonians, brings off the symphony very well. The finale is glorious, with perfect contributions from tenor Juhan Tralla and the magnificent organ. The film is great, the audio transparent, but it appears somewhat compressed in the Liszt. ... show more
