  • Attention: Escaped Ants
Very cool little ant farm...HOWEVER there is a large gap between the one tube that connects the gel section to the nest section. All morning we have been finding ants. We'd grab it and put it back in. We could not figure out where they were coming from until we WATCHED an ant come from here. Two of the caps are also very loose so I have tape on those. What is the point of an ant farm if they are not contained? My son is very bummed. ... show more

  • Nightmare Ordeal
We went from, "This will be a fun learning experience," to "OMG how many escaped?!" So first we had some problems getting the tubes set up. One side was too big, the other too small. Trying to plug the holes again was a no go since apparently none of the plugs would fit again. My husband fiddled with it and managed to make it so that they wouldn't move and there was no space. Added harvester ants. Watched them a good 20 or 30 minutes, when suddenly, "Woah, where'd that ant come from??" We killed it, watched the farm more and more. Convinced ourselves that it must've fallen out when we were putting them in and we just didn't see it. Went down to dinner. When I came back up there were 3 loose. 2 on the floor trying to climb back up, and one running around trying to get back into the farm. Couldn't risk it, killed them. Told my husband they had to go. After freezing them, he realized that there were several places in the structure that weren't sealed properly and a pretty large hole towards the back of the square. I have no idea how we missed it or how we would've fixed it. Fingers crossed we got them all and we're not going to find harvester ants in our beds. ... show more

  • Not happy, now have ants running all over the house.
We have been losing ants all day after adding ants from the bundle pack. Finally found where they were escaping from. The house was not pushed down all the way which resulted in a space large enough tweezers that come with it would fit between tube and house. When I tried to push it all the way down, it just pops back up. End cap plugs that come with it at so loose that if your not careful they fall out of you bump the house. I literally have packing tape all over our ant castle just to keep them in. Overall, very unhappy with this item. Great idea, poor execution. ... show more

  • Fun and mostly easy. It clearly states it does not come with live ants.
First it clearly states it doesn't come with ants. So a little... short sighted not to read the description of the thing you're buying. I say it's nearly ready to go. The tubes included dont fit perfectly in the holes. You can grind down the sides of the tube by rubbing it on concrete or brick. You won't be removing the tubes much or maybe at all once you put the ants inside but too increase the longevity I'd grind down the sides on the ends a bit. The instructions say they'll eat seeds. I gave them Kentucky Bluegrass and bits of pretzel cracker. They'd probably like poppy seeds too. They'll likely make the "graveyard" in the bottom corner. Which has a plug so you can clean it but you shouldn't be too alarmed. But it will need to be cleaned eventually. (See pic 5 & 6) It's sturdy enough to handle but if you dropped it on a hard surface it'll likely break beyond repair but you never really know. ... show more

  • Nice and easy
Got this for my kids. The first one we got the gel was too hard (maybe because it's winter) but the ants couldn't dig through for two weeks. So we got a replacement and after only a few days they already got a long tunnel through! It's nice and easy to set up. For precaution we taped the lids down. (Remember to poke holes through tape for air holes) There are two separate lids. One smaller for feeding area and larger one on top. They were both secured. No gaps or holes. There are some smaller holes on sides with removable covers to put in the tubes. Which we also did after week. Other reviewers mentioned how ants struggled to climb tubes so we put little "climbing ropes" into tubes as well, taped. I thought it helped the ants. The blue gel is beautiful to look at. The kids love looking at ants moving in all areas. You can remove small covered hole on top and drip water through there as well. Accessories included were: water dropper pipette, magnifying glass, 2 water sponge cloths, 2 tubes, and plastic tweezer which we used for feeding and cleaning. Most likely you got harvester ants so just be careful with opening lids to clean and feed. Keep ants in and watch out for bites! It was easy to transport ants from old to new (and you could connect more than 1 together). The holes are big enough to grab ants and small enough that they aren't spilling out and hurting you. ... show more

  • Great gift
My daughter got this for her birthday. We have had it a year and only a few ants have died. It’s really cool to watch what they do every day. You do not need to feed them however sometimes we would drop a crumb in there and they loved it. Also taking the top off and putting it back on gives them a boost of energy. I’m guess it’s from the fresh air. Great buy. Small and compact. ... show more

  • Great starter set
This is a really good set for beginners. We have 2 sets connected, and currently have about 30 harvester ants living there. The set is good quality and well constructed. Lids and tubes fit securely.

  • Worked well in a classroom - one time use however
Purchased for a first grade classroom. Was easy to use the ants did well and the children were able to watch and see. My only cavette is the square feeding area is a two-story compartment. This compartment does not remove or open in any way to clean out the lowest level. Unfortunately this is where the ants chose to bring all their dead and now I'm trying to clean it out and not having very much success. Also when I was trying to tap it out the plastic spider webbed a bit so I quit. ... show more
