I originally purchased a Marshalltown cutter, but returned it due to the poor design. I was hesitant to buy this one because it’s not made in the USA, but then realized the other one wasn’t either — it just had the “assembled in the USA” asterisk attached to it. I install floors for a living with my buddy’s flooring company, and I got tired of always using his Bullet Tools chopper, so I decided to buy my own. I was skeptical because of the low price and where it was made, but honestly, this thing is designed really well. It actually chops better than my friend’s $350 cutter. The handle design is genius. The handle passes completely through the cylindrical piece and is welded on both sides, making it much stronger than my friend’s expensive cutter, which actually broke and had to be re-welded because of its weaker design. The tray is plastic, but it’s reinforced well and feels strong enough. I’ll probably trace it onto a piece of wood and make a wooden tray eventually just for extra durability. All in all, this thing has been holding up great, and I’m really happy with it.

Excellent floor cutter, especially for large LVP or laminate jobs
Style: 17MM Heavy Floor Cutter
I bought this floor cutter for laminate and LVP, mainly for making straight cuts to shorten planks and some basic angle cuts. It isn’t designed for complicated cuts or notches, but for full-width straight cuts, it works extremely well. The blade is extremely sharp and cuts beautifully. You can even shave off a very thin sliver, basically the thickness of paper, when you need to make a small adjustment. I’ve now used it on around 1,000 square feet and the blade is still very sharp. It’s not quite as sharp as when it was new, but I would expect it to go many thousands of square feet before needing to be replaced or sharpened. The quality of the cut really comes down to the person using the tool. If you take your time and line everything up properly, you can make extremely clean, consistent cuts. I’ve been able to make cuts that were basically perfect without having to hide or blend anything afterward. One thing I really like is being able to see exactly where the blade is coming down on the plank. Having a good light positioned at an angle, especially toward the back side of the cutter, makes it much easier to see your line and position the plank exactly where you want it. For the more complicated cuts that this cutter isn’t designed for, I found that I didn’t need much else. A jigsaw, utility knife, and a set of pliers were basically enough to handle the notches, corners, and other odd cuts. Between those tools and this cutter, I was able to do the entire LVP installation without needing a bunch of specialized equipment. Compared with the typical laminate cutters that operate more like a giant paper cutter or scissors, I much prefer this design. It’s a heavier and more substantial tool, and the cutting action is excellent. It’s also relatively quiet compared with using power tools, which is a big advantage if you’re working in a condo or on an upper floor with someone living below you. It does make a solid thud when you make a cut, though, so it’s not completely silent. I also compared the regular-duty version with the heavy-duty version. There really isn’t much difference between them for normal laminate and LVP. The frame, cutting table, angle guide, blade, wheels, and most of the hardware are the same. The main difference is the actual cutting head assembly and lever mechanism on the heavy-duty version. A lot of the parts are interchangeable. For regular laminate and LVP, I honestly don’t think most people will notice enough of a difference to justify the heavy-duty version. The regular version is already more than capable for this type of flooring. The heavy-duty version is a little more substantial in the cutting mechanism, but you’re mostly paying for that heavier-duty head. The biggest downside is assembly. The set screws were loose in the box when I opened it, just rolling around, so they’re very easy to lose. The aluminum frame isn’t particularly difficult to assemble, but getting all the bars aligned properly takes some patience. It took me about 30 minutes because I was being very meticulous. You could probably do it in half that time, but you may not get everything lined up as nicely. The plastic base is also very flimsy and feels cheap. I wouldn’t want to drop the cutter or bang it against something because I could easily see the plastic cracking. There are also a couple of sharp edges around the outside that could snag something or cut you, so those could have been finished better. Once it’s assembled, though, it’s very easy to use. If you can operate a paper cutter, you can operate this. It’s not a complicated or intimidating machine. Obviously the blade is extremely sharp, so you need to keep your fingers out of the cutting area, but there’s really nothing complicated about using it. The wheels are useful for moving it around, although I personally don’t think they’re necessary. The cutter isn’t so heavy that I couldn’t just pick it up and move it. Someone who doesn’t want to lift it might appreciate having the wheels, though. Storage is another minor annoyance. Once assembled, it takes up quite a bit of space. Since the frame breaks down into sections to fit into the smaller box, you can take it apart for storage, but then you have to keep track of all the screws and pieces. That’s both a benefit and a hassle. I’d like to see a wood or aluminum top on the cutting table, but that would obviously add more weight. As it is, the table works fine. Overall, I think this is a great tool and definitely something worth keeping if you’re installing multiple LVP or laminate floors. The assembly could be better, and some of the materials and finishing aren’t impressive, but the actual cutting performance is excellent. The blade is extremely sharp, the cuts can be very precise, and it’s much quieter and cleaner than dragging out power tools for every straight cut. The assembly and some of the cheap-looking parts could be better, but the actual tool does exactly what I want it to do. For cutting LVP and laminate flooring, especially on a large installation, I think this is a great tool to have.
