Description

The MSR Lightning Explore All-Terrain Snowshoes for men and women are the lightest, most comfortable snowshoes in the MSR line. Designed with superior traction for hiking, trekking, and extended backcountry trips, they provide exceptional performance, without sacrificing ease-of-use. A 360-degree traction frame offers edge-to-edge grip, and crampons provide extra bite on traverses and steep slopes. HyperLink bindings feature a cushioned cradle that eliminates pressure points, and a macro-adjust strap keeps feet centered and accommodates a wide range of footwear. Rugged, lightweight polyurethane decking offers floatation and durability, and easy-to-engage Ergo Televator heel lifts offer help on the steeps, reducing fatigue. The MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoes are compatible with MSR Modular Floatation Tails (sold separately), for extra float when carrying heavier loads, or encountering changing snow conditions. Available in three sizes to accommodate a range of body weights/gear loads: 22-inch snowshoes measure 8 x 22 inches, weigh 3.8 pounds/pair, and carry a 180-pound load; 25-inch snowshoes measure 8 x 25 inches, weigh 3.9 pounds/pair, and carry up to 220 pounds; 30-inch snowshoes measure 8 x 30 inches, weigh 4.5 pounds/pair, and carry up to 280 pounds. Bindings fit men’s shoe sizes 4.5-15. Maximize maneuverability with the smallest snowshoe that will float body weight, plus gear (outerwear, backpack, trekking poles). Sold as a pair. • Wider, extra straps
Breaking trail wasnt that easy in 2ft of snow in places, when sticks are sticking up where you snowshoe, I would recommend a mesh bottom. Could be wider but they work great in most trails I've been on so far. Order the extra set of straps the ones that come at kind of short. I needed 2 12" straps for my size 11 baffin boots, which are pretty bulky. ... show more

  • First time out with them, went great !
I have only used old school shoes in the past. So can't compare to other modern shoes. However, I just did a few hrs up and down hills. under/ over trees.to give them a test run. I only hike/ shoe in wild areas, no trails... Worked great ! Expensive but worth it. I'll have 10x the trips and enjoyment this year. . Seem to be made well. Hope they take the beating I will give them. ... show more

  • Great Snowshoes
My first time snowshoeing and these are great!

  • Worse than cheaper snowshoes
We've ended up with 4 pairs of snowshoes up in Truckee, and the MSR Lightning Explores are the worst and also the most expensive. 3 main problems: 1. they have poor lateral stability, it's really easy to roll your ankle, especially walking downhill. This might be from using the ultralight mesh rather than stronger/stiffer material 2. uncomfortable, because the binding grips too far forward on the foot. I've put my foot about as far forward as I can and still be able to step without hitting the mesh backing, and still there's a feeling of my toes being crushed together 3. low quality paint wears off right away. I got the "International Orange" color which is sort of a bright red/orange and looked great in the shop. But, after just 4 hikes of around an hour each, the paint is completely gone from the bottom despite never walking on anything but snow, and it's already missing in patches around the side bolts and other spots About the only positive thing I can say is that it's the quickest binding system of the bunch. That's nice for getting in and out of them. Like if you prefer to just walk through the snow without them on.. My MSR Evos are great (~$140), Tubbs Wilderness ones are great (~$120), and I have some old, cheap Redfeather ones that were something like $75 but work just fine. I would rather wear any of these over the MSR Lighting Explore even though the Lightning Explore was nearly $400 with the powder tail accessory. Serious buyer's remorse - take my advice and just go with more basic snowshoes - you don't need to spend an extra ~$230 just to shave a few ounces off the weight, unless you're so serious about ultralight that you're also going to be shopping on weight for underwear. ... show more

  • Two strap binding is very bad for my toes.
Instead of holding my foot down the new strap system crushes my toes inward. I don't think this happens to everyone but I think it's worse if you have larger, wider feet. Can't wear these with out popping off toenails like pogs.
