  • Good board withsome issues
Style: MEG Z590 UNIFY Size: ATX
so this is my second unify board, and mostly happy with it. here's my thoughts so far, at least compared to the z490 unify... Pros: - your definitely getting a nice beefy/heavy board with a very capable VRM - dual bios and flash back is great protection - connection for temp sensor - 4 m2 slots, 3 of which are pci-e gen 4 (need 11th gen proc to use the first and any at gen 4 speeds) - m2 heatsinks for all - tons of fan headers - vrm heatsinks cover more of the VRM compnnents cons: - wish the m2 slots had thermal tape on both bottom and top, esp for the faster gen 4 drives - apparently I'm the first to bring to their attention, after all these months, that the m2 sensor and external temp sensor connectors are not working in bios or any other apps. working with support we confirmed they work, but only in their msi companion addon and gamebar. but you can't use the m2 or tsen_1 connectors for anything. at this point waiting to see if they update this before my return window closes, since the tsen_1 is one reason I bought the board, and they also removed the pcie temp sensor the 490 board had. - passed up on a good deal for a gen 4 m2 drive, because it had a non removable heatsink. so you'd have to remove the one build into the motherboard. but, the 4 m2 slots are covered by 2 separate pieces, so you have to remove this whole large motherboard piece if you wan to install just one drive that has a heatsink built in. - while you get an awesome 3x m2 at gen 4 speeds, in order to use the addtional 2, you have to set it in bios to allow for this, and in doing so, it forces the your 1 pcie x16 slot for the video card to x8. it's not a huge hit you take to performance, at least from what I've seen of people testing this online, but you do take a hit. it's odd since the first m1 slot, you can select whether to have that one slot run at gen 3 or 4, but the other two you don't get that individual selection, even if you just have one of the additional 2 slots filled with a gen 4 drive. just seems odd. - as others mentioned, the video card slot for some reason is lower on the board when mounted, so it puts your video card pretty low to the bottom of you PS shroud, if you have one of those cases. it was close enough in my mesh II case, esp with a fan I had mounted at the bottom, that I ended up buying a vertical video card mount kit. - I'm actually no a fan of them moving the debug display to the top of the board, as it gets mostly blocked by an AIO mounted to the top Overall, I still like the board, esp if you can get it on sale, but we'll see if they get those temp sensor issues fixed soon. they didn't give me any timeline and closed my ticket, so who knows. ... show more

  • Really great board
Style: MEG Z490I UNIFY Size: ITX
I purchased this motherboard so that I could take advantage of Intel's newest processors...and their multi-core, mulit-threaded applications. Specifically, I use this as a server that's on mostly 24/7. So far, I've been really happy with the combo (this motherboard with Core i5-10400). The combo provides loads of power and capability, and while consuming very little power. Some pro's from my experience: -Board is very well built: Taking it out of the box, you immediately realize how heavy it is. I bet it weighs more than the ATX board it replaced. This is probably due to the high-end heatsinks all over the board. -Board doesn't use much power. Total consumption with 3 idle HDD's and one SSD is around 35w. With everything spun and CPU really moving, it's runs around 65w (peaks at 80w). This is very good for server use. -Board has adequate I/O connectors. USB connectors are adequate for my usage. And the thunderbolt port and controller are passthrough-able to my VM's, so I can use USB-C hubs with VM's. Now, for a few cons... -BIOS is kind of lackluster. GUI/graphics are fine, but layout is mediocre and options (outside of overclocking) are lacking. For a quick example: I couldn't find the VT-D and other virtualization settings...turns out they were hidden in the 'overclocking' menu. Odd. -No legacy boot support. For the life of me, I wasn't able to boot anything from a legacy device. EFI only friends. I may be wrong about this, but if I am, someone please tell me the steps because I sure wasn't able to find them. -Fan control is good, but the graphical setup for creating fan curves was pretty basic. I would personally prefer if there was a table I could fill out without needing to drag and drop speed points. -No live update for the BIOS. Have to use the good ol' USB method. All in all, I would definitely recommend this motherboard for both beginners and experts alike. As long as the beginners use EFI boot devices, the board should be plug and play after driver install. Experts will love the overclocking ability from this board. The board is well-made and should last as long as you'll want to keep this generation of components. Thunderbolt support is a huge plus. Overall, I give it a 4/5 ... show more
