Description

Pain may be unavoidable at times, but suffering―in other words, how we relate to the pain―is optional. We know that practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress and cultivate deep, embodied well-being―but what about its value in dealing with physical pain and the suffering that ensues when it seems overwhelming or unrelenting? Jon Kabat-Zinn developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to help medical patients with ongoing chronic pain conditions who were not responding to conventional treatments, including drugs or surgery, to use mindfulness as a formal meditation practice and as a way of being in relationship to experience throughout the day to regulate and attenuate the experience of suffering. Since then, the practices of MBSR have become world-renowned for their effectiveness in helping people learn to live and live well with ongoing health challenges, including chronic pain conditions. With Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief, Jon guides us through the fundamentals, a series of evidence-based practices that anyone can apply gently and effectively to address even intense forms of pain and suffering, as a complement to whatever medical treatments one might be receiving. Includes audio guidance for all key practices, accessible online and led by the author. This supportive guide, graced with soothing images and large color-type key elements, includes instruction in mindful breathing, working with intense sensations, befriending thoughts and emotions, taking refuge in awareness, and bringing mindfulness into everyday life as a new way of being. • Beautiful and Calming
Both my husband and I have chronic pain, and we read this book to each other. We then downloaded the five guided meditations and are doing them together. The ideas and the meditations are simple, and they have an immediate effect of calming us and giving us reassurance that our pain is workable, that it doesn't have to overwhelm our lives. The pictures (watercolor paintings) are gorgeous, and they are coupled with reminders from the text. ... show more

  • Chronic pain management
John Kabat Zinn’s words and his method on not just dealing but living with pain has been a great help to me for many years and this book is a fantastically written, easy to understand and can be a memory refresher at times of need

  • Helpful for chronic pain
I felt the book had some great information but disliked how the “decorative” pages just reprinted the same information as in the text. A little light on material. Lovely images but I was looking for more substance. The meditations that you may download from the book are excellent so to me redeem may shortfalls I found with the text itself. ... show more

  • Disappointing
I have followed Kabat Zinn for decades and frequently watch him in YouTube videos, etc. Unfortunately, I purchased this (very small) volume in hopes of new content from him. There is no new content, unless you count the watercolor drawings and whole-page quotes from the text. My impression is that this art and the large quotes are simply filler - to make the book longer or make it appear more substantive. Don't get me wrong. His writing is wonderful as always but I see this book as mostly a marketing gimmick. Rehashing a small amount of old content, adding some watercolor pictures, and adding many whole pages empty of anything but one quotation. This is sadly a complete waste of money. I expected more from Sounds True (the publisher). Lesson learned. ... show more

  • Thoughtful
An intriguing look at the use of mindfulness for chronic pain. As a sufferer for years of chronic pelvic pain, I was interested in learning new ones to cope and this book delivered. Well-written and engrossing.

What an amazing book. As a person who lives with chronic pain I was happy to learn how to manage without medication. I loved this book and can not wait to read another book from the author
